Albert Ball VC was one of Britain’s most celebrated fighter pilots of WW1.
Born in Nottingham in 1896, he joined the army at the outbreak of war before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. By the age of 20, Ball had become the United Kingdom’s leading flying ace, credited with 44 aerial victories.
His skill, determination and courage earned him the Distinguished Service Order twice over, the Military Cross, and posthumously, the Victoria Cross following his death in France on 7 May 1917.

Rare illustration by A. Chidwell Miller (1921) depicting the the evolution of uniforms for the Royal Flying Corps and the earliest uniforms of the Royal Air Force during and immediately after World War I. Note: Fig. 1/4. The first RAF blue uniforms, the light grey-blue cloth produced for all-ranks in 1918 seen here on the Airman in No.1 Dress and the officer in his 'British Warm' short coat. The colour was not popular and replaced by the now familiar Blue-Grey still worn today in 1919. Fig. 3. Is actually a Royal Flying Corps General & Fig. 5 is an RAF officer in No.1 khaki dress in 1918! (FTP)
