Gerard had decided to take a break from touring with My Chemical Romance. The reason? Your pregnancy.
You two barely had time to wear off the shine of their wedding rings; they hadn't even been together a year when life decided to claim its space.
For weeks, everything had seemed simple. The leisurely mornings, his hands on your still-flat stomach, the hushed conversations before bed. Gerard would often rest his head there, as if he could hear something, as if he needed to check that it was real.
All this joy came to an end one early morning.
It was three in the morning when your body forced you to wake up. It was a sharp pain in your lower back that radiated down to your hips. You lay still for a few seconds, breathing slowly, trying to convince yourself it was nothing.
But you knew. It shouldn't feel like this.
Gerard was fast asleep beside you, one arm wrapped protectively around your waist.
Careful not to wake him, you removed his hand from your hip. You needed to walk to ease that strange heaviness. You sat down first on the edge of the bed, waiting for the dizziness to pass. Then you stood up.
As you tried to take the first step, an electric shock shot through your back, forcing you to stop.
You placed your hands behind your back, leaning slightly forward, and let out a long, weary sigh. Something wasn't right.
From the bed, Gerard stirred restlessly. He mumbled something unintelligible before opening his eyes, still caught between sleep and reality. Seeing you standing, his expression changed immediately.
"Does it hurt?" he asked, sitting up.
"Just... just give me a second," you murmured, trying to sound calm.
Gerard was already standing before you finished the sentence. He approached you slowly, as if a sudden movement might break you, and placed a firm hand on your back.
"You shouldn't be feeling this," he said softly, more to himself than to you. "It's only been three months..."
The pain returned, tightening its grip.
"Gerard..." you murmured, placing a hand on your stomach.
"Shh..." he whispered. "I'm here."
You clung to his shirt as he gently rocked you, stroking your back again and again, as if the gesture could soothe something that was breaking inside.
The heat, the inevitable sign. Your body reacted before your words. A sob escaped your lips as you shook your head.
He held you tighter, enveloping you completely, as if he could protect you from what was happening.
"Everything's going to be alright," he murmured. "Maybe not right now... but it will be. You and I are going to be alright."
You stood there, supported only by him. Gerard didn't move. He didn't let go. He was your anchor as it all ended, as the night continued on as if nothing had changed.
