Jumping from child care to private security really messes with you. I keep saying "oopsie daisy" and encouraging drunk folks to "go home, drink some water and take a nap, and let's try again in 24 hours, okay?" Best part by far is that it's working. Guy went like he was going to fight me the other day and his buddy said "you leave the nice lady alone"
[ID: Comment by @emilyshka “INCREDIBLE, good for you. I went from being a nanny to bartending and accidentally put a whole bachelorette party in time-out. 100% recommend it was great.”]
As someone very vocal about youth liberation, I'm always saying we should treat children more like adults, but we should also treat adults more like children. But in a kind way, not a "ignore their opinions and abuse them" way.
A paramedic at work said something horrifyingly misogynistic at the beginning of a training scenario in front of multiple people including two women who were also paramedics. I did what I do to my kids: held up a hand, looked him dead in the face, and said “no thank you”
And he literally didn’t speak for the next 2 hours. 11/10, still use.
“bits to use in everyday conversations”
Solarpunk has failed. It's time for the Solar Gothic. Show me an environmentally conscious world that is haunted by its past; where its failures still intrude upon the present. Where the characters live in the shadow of a decadent but much more materially wealthy past whose crumbling edifices mock them with the waste and the missed opportunities they represent. Show me characters who remember the promise of modernity, the story of ever-growing progress, and either lament that it is not for them or continue to cling to it like madmen. Show me a world that's trapped, claustrophobically, in an anthropocene that they are only gradually learning to manage, and where all former illusions of mastery or permanence have been dispelled.

This needs to be immortalized because it's what made me turn on the sound. And they were right
“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know

Trying to figure out what I want the town from the story to look like! Also took a bit of inspiration from my hometown. :)

A lot of writing advice is told as factual, that you must take it or your writing will be bad.
No.
If a piece of writing advice isn’t constructive to you, if it doesn’t help you, or if you dislike it, then disregard it.
Your creative process feeling right is more important than pleasing every other writer.
I agree with this, to an extent.
I’m wary of telling people a blanket statement like, “take what advice you want” because I have absolutely encountered in the wild That Guy who believes his work is flawless, that the people who don’t understand his genius are idiots, and that the reason his work isn’t selling is the system is rigged against him.
Don’t be that dude.
It’s good and healthy to develop some objective sense of how good you are, inasmuch as quality can be objective. You do this mostly by reading the work of masters, folks generally agreed to be good at a thing, and also by reading the work of novices, and learning how to critically appraise a piece of work. That will get you in the ballpark. Then you have to learn to trust the opinions of people whose tastes you admire, and listen when they tell you something is wrong.
I like to say that writing advice is just a bunch of tools. Each one does something different. You have to know what you’re building and what tool you need for the desired effect.
So if a piece of advice isn’t resonating with you…make sure you understand it, first, and know what it’s supposed to do, and what you’re trying to do in your work. Then find tools that work better for what you’re doing.
