Change
Change…yep…we hate it. We loathe it. We will barricade ourselves in the closet, holding the handle, screaming NOOOOOOOO to avoid it! Perfect example is my awesome husband Kris. (I’m hoping he won’t read this issue) Windows XP. We loved it. We had it for years. Excel was easy. Word was simple to use. It was super user friendly. Then came along Windows 8. Holy cow, he thought the world had ended! New programs? Wait, what? Why?? He was in a state of shock. So, while the majority of us kept plugging along learning the new system. Actually finding some things we liked and most of it becoming second nature, Kris was still in XP. Keeping the status quo. Not allowing change to affect his world in a box.
Then the big announcement. Windows XP will no longer be supported. OMG, is was like a hurricane of crazy at our house! Not only did we now have to upgrade the computers, but we had to learn new things! Did you hear me? New things! What I thought I would find when I got home that day was a grown man in the corner rocking and crying. It ended up not being that bad, but he still refused to upgrade. It wasn’t until the virus effects got so bad, that he finally moved on. He learned the new system and is actually pretty darn good at it. In fact, for Christmas last year I got him a laptop with a huge touch screen monitor. He’s becoming quite the techy guy. But yep, he still hates change.
Then there is my 15 year old. He bounces from a laptop to the iPad, to his phone to the SmartTV and back again with ease. He takes on new programs and games like it’s his job. Change doesn’t even phase him. Something new? Awesome, when can we start? Why is it so easy for him?
Now, me? I’m somewhere in the middle. I do love change. I like to think big picture and how to get there. But I also love to know what I am doing and when something new comes along it tends to slow me down while I learn and anyone who knows me, knows that slow is not my friend. Warp speed, Mr. Sulu! That’s how I do things.
So change…yep, it’s rough. In this day and age it impossible to avoid. Especially in real estate. Hello, CFPB? But maybe, with a deep breath and a curiosity for knowledge we can find change to be a way to slow down a bit, re-evaluate our processes and maybe even find that the change we hate and dread is better that what we are now.Â
