First-Name-Basis: A Oneshot
Siriusâ heart thundered against his chest.
He was facing the door to Professor McGonagallâs office.
âGo on, mate,â Remus whispered, âItâll be alright.â
âThe worst she can do is say ânoâ,â Peter pointed out.
âThereâs no reason to be afraid,â James bracingly said, âItâs just Professor McGonagall!â
âJust Professor McGonagall?â
The group of eleven-year-olds meekly spun around.
Professor McGonagall was standing behind them, eyebrows raised.
Evidently, she hadnât been in the office after all.
âHi, Professor,â Sirius weakly said, âErrâŚcan I talk to you?â
She opened her door and gestured for him to follow.
âGood luck, mate,â James quietly said.
Sirius took a deep breath and entered the office, closing the door after him. Professor McGonagall instructed him to sit and he did so. She sat on the opposite side of the desk and, surprisingly, offered him a chocolate biscuit.
He accepted, feeling considerably better.
âNow then, Mr. Black,â Professor McGonagall crisply said, âWhat did you want to tell me?â
âActually, thatâs just it,â Sirius admitted.
He hesitated and stammered, âCould youâŚerrâŚcould youâŚ?â
âCould you call me âSiriusâ?â
Professor McGonagall gave a start and said, âExcuse me?â
âItâs justâŚthatâs my nameâŚâ
âI know that itâs your given name,â Professor McGonagall replied, âHowever, it is traditional for professors to refer to their students by their surname.â
âYeah, I know,â Sirius quickly said, âButâŚwellâŚIâve never really been one for tradition.â
She folded her hands and asked, âOther than skewing tradition, is there a particular reason why you want me to refer to you by your given name?â
âWellâŚâ Sirius hesitantly said, âItâs justâŚmy parents and I donât exactly see eye-to-eyeâŚandâŚIâve realizedâŚthatâŚwellâŚI donât really like being a Black. Unfortunately, I canât change my last name until Iâm seventeen. But, in the meantime, Iâd like to ensure that Iâm not constantly reminded of it.â
Professor McGonagall stared at him for quite some time.
At long last, she said, âVery well. I believe that we can skew tradition just this once.â
Sirius grinned and cried, âThanks, Professor!â
âYouâre welcome, Sirius.â
His grin turned into a smirk and he asked, âCan I call you Minerva?â
âDonât press your luck!â
