Tony was giving a press conference. Nothing particularly unusual, except for how much he fucking hurt. He was heading straight for the middle of a particularly bad flare up, could feel the steady worsening of the ache in his chest and back.
Not that anyone could tell. He had his typical charm on - the type he always pulled out for the press - but if you knew him well enough, it was possible to pick up the way his eyes were a little too tight, how he moved a little too stiffly.
He kept talking, answering press questioning, his voice rife with barely-surpressed tension.
*Having worked alongside Tony for years, Steve had come to know his tells. Tony’s subtle flinching at a sudden spike of pain, the way he held himself a bit too straight. So Steve slots himself next to Tony and puts a hand on his shoulder, nodding along like he understands half of the tech garble he’s given up on learning. He waits for a good moment to feign an Avengers issue he needs Tony for so he can pull him aside.*
Tony looks at Steve when he slots himself at his side, but the movement is slower than usual, stiff. Reporters yell out questions, some directed at Steve too. Tony ignores them and gives his best press-smile, the one his close friends hated in it's fakeness. "That's all for today, folks..."

*Steve says loud enough for cameras and reporters to pick up. He’s talking in his Captain America voice which he rarely uses around friends.*
I’ve got a villain case I need you to look over.
*Was it poor acting? Yeah but it worked.*
*Steve pulled Tony off to the side getting Tony away from the people and the cameras then pulled a bottle of ibuprofen out of one of the pouches on his belt.*
You need to start listening to your body more.
Tony shrugs apologetically to the press, and then winces when the movement makes his body ache. He slips away into the other room with Steve and gratefully swallows a handful of ibuprofen. "My body is fine. Being listened to."
I didn’t say a handful- Jesus Tony, your kidneys are doing enough without you taking 7 ibuprofen. Just slow down. Clearly you’re not listening to your body. How long were you going to be up there for?
Your body can’t handle what it used to and you need to learn these new limits.
