Anybody else with chronic illness feel like they are just kinda going through the motions of life, but not really living? Like, I can have one good day and feel on top of the world, but then it’s right back to where I started. I am over it.
For those of you feeling this way:
Everyday is a journey when you’re sick. Your bad days, your days stuck at home or stuck in bed matter too.
Don’t feel like you are waisting into nothing because you have no spoons.
You have no spoons because your body is working so incredibly hard and is fighting. And that’s incredible. Not many people would be able to handle what you are going through.
Take up space. Breathe in all the air. Be alive is a process. Nothing is wasted
When you get a random spike of intense pain that fades away after a few seconds
It’s very difficult to draw during a dizzy/shaking spell, but that also happens to be when I usually want to draw the most. I’m trying to embrace the sloppiness, so that I can keep making art even during higher pain.
i think it’s really important for abled leftists to be conscious of how they frame issues that specifically affect chronically ill and disabled folks. i’m not gonna get into like, how a lot of leftist utopia fantasies see “eradicating disability” as a good thing because others have already talked about that better than i can, but i mean more like with things like how pollution is the fault of corporations, not individuals, and individual lifestyle changes aren’t enough to reverse climate damage or prevent climate disaster.
idk i’m just thinking about how the campus i’ve been working at this summer has signs by every elevator about how you should take the stairs to conserve electricity, and signs by the drink machines with photos of sea turtles that say how they don’t offer plastic straws because of ocean pollution, and how i’ve been repeating to myself all summer you are not just a drain on the earth’s resources, you deserve to exist, and how fucking angry that makes me.
and i know a lot of leftists point out how those kind of things aren’t much better than platitudes when we should be focusing on action against the fossil fuel industry, but i feel like a lot of conversations about that just totally ignore how environmental guilt is absolutely crushing so many disabled people’s spirits and sense of worth in an already ableist society.
i guess i just wanna say that like, if you ate off of a styrofoam plate today because you didn’t have the energy to wash dishes, i’m so glad you ate. if you threw recyclables in the trash because the recycling bin is on the other side of the building and you couldn’t walk far enough to make two trips, i’m so proud of you for keeping your space clean. if you needed to use a plastic straw today, i’m so, so sorry for all the bullshit that’s been directed your way lately, and i’m so proud of you for enduring it.
if you use non-reusable diapers, if your medication requires a lot of packaging, if devices you need to stay alive are single-use, if your assistive devices use a lot of electricity, if you can’t take public transportation, i’m so glad you’re here, i’m so sorry this world wasn’t built for us, i’m so sorry we’ve been made into a scapegoat for corporate greed, i’m so sorry that most days it feels like no one is defending us.
As someone who was raised by an old-school hippie and lived through the very cheerful “eco-radical” nineties, this was a MAJOR thing I had to process as my illness took hold. I was raised wiping down counters with reusable cloths and hang-drying my clothes and recycling every scrap. I had to learn how to forgive myself for using paper towels, because I’d never used them. Hell, I’ve literally been to friends’ houses made out of slowly molding strawbale with loft beds and composting toilets and, yes, cloth toilet paper. It was very green-blogger-romantic, and my chronically ill self has nightmares at the memory.
I want life to be easy for disabled people… and also people who live in an area without access, or are working too much to spend extra energy, or while they caretake others, or are pregnant, or… etc. etc. etc. Disabled people are on the front-line of access, and OUR LIVES MATTER, full stop. But we are also often the front-runners of access for wide range of vulnerable people. Lots and lots can be written about those of us who don’t eat because we don’t want to be wasteful, or don’t clean because oh no those paper towels/wet wipes are killing the planet! Now, don’t get me wrong, if you’re abled and able to ride your bike to work, great! Enjoy doing that. If you have the energy to wash out that stainless steel water bottle, or live in an area where you have access to easy recycling and easy bulk foods (funny how all the articles about zero packaging are from people in mid-to-upper class urban areas huh?) that is a nice thing to do! But do it humbly and quietly, and remember to vote against the actual systemic polluters. Too many people are invested in showy purity culture, but “green” this time, and breeds the same toxic effect as other purity cultures.
Also, if the old hippies taught me anything, the BEST ways to improve the environment are figuring out methods of access and design that makes everyone’s lives better but ALSO easier – designing new homes to be passively solar cuts down on HVAC costs but is also more livable. Spray-style bidets might actually improve the lives of those with mobility issues and expend LESS energy (having to shop for disposable goods) as opposed to creating more work (and endless social stigma) of reusables. I honestly think this “self-flagellation” style green is a really 2000s-era form of shifting focus from actually critically examining our consumer patterns and more about creating new trendy “reusable!” water bottles to sell you. (I mean, at the end of the day, it’s all about companies cutting THEIR cost by not using the electric to run that elevator, or pay for the straws… but we’ve fully bought the idea it’s somehow the individual’s fault.) If someone’s “green initiative” makes you feel like a burden for existing, it just ain’t that green. You deserve to EAT, have a clean environment, and not exhaust yourself. And, as always, HAVE ACCESS.

Does it ever occur to you out of the blue how bad your condition has gotten? Like you’re just sipping coffee thinking about breakfast and then you realize that just a couple years ago you could do so many more things. You realize that you’ve acclimated so well to this life that you can’t even imagine how it was before.
self check-in questionnaire:
what is my breathing like? is it slow, is it fast? is it deep, is it shallow?
are my thoughts racing? am i stuck on one subject?
do i need food or water?
have i rested today?
have i taken my meds?
what is my mood like?
have i talked to a friend?
do i need a break?
am i feeling any tension in my body? where?
what are my surroundings?
am i feeling any sensations? any smells or sights?
what is my heart rate like?
do i need to brush my teeth? take a shower?
do i need to use the restroom?
am i in a space where the temperature is comfortable for me?
do i need to cry?
am i feeling safe?
Oh, here’s a thing. A great concrete list for when you feel weird but are having trouble pinpointing it, need a one-time mindfulness break, or want to check in with yourself on a regular basis!
Pssst: you can write your own, too 🤓
you know that terrible moment when someone is talking to you and an intense pain hits and you lose track of what the person is saying because your brain is going AHHHHHH but you are so used to masking your pain that no one realizes something is wrong? so they keep talking?? and expect you to have a regular conversation?
