i hope you are prepared because oh my god, do i have noremma headcanons. let’s start at the beginning
when they were babies Emma literally could not leave Norman alone, she was just enamored with him from the moment she arrived at plant 3.
he always loved to show her new things, whether it be something in a book or a cool rock, because she’d always get so excited, no matter what it was. this never changes.
they both grew accustomed to the idea that the other was never too far out of reach. as Shirai said, both Ray and Isabella thought of Norman and Emma as a set.
Emma likes to sing, and would often hum to herself while they were playing, sometimes mimicking the melodies of the birds outside. Norman associates birdsong with her because of this.
He always thought she was more creative and cleverer than him.
Norman slowly understood that his fondness for her was special, realizing how much he cared for her by his 11th birthday (this is hardly a hc, The Letter From Norman says almost exactly this lol). The night they learned the truth about the house, though, is when he realized he loves her.
She overheard him telling Ray that he loves her, and that’s why he wants to escape with everyone. She heard him, but didn’t really process it in the moment. There were other things to think about. She doesn’t fully understand what he meant until after the escape.
After he was shipped, Emma stole his cardigan out of the laundry before it could be washed. She wore it during the escape, even though it’d stopped smelling like him.
Emma carries the picture Ray took of her and Norman in her pocket. She looked at it every night.
We know that Emma functions as Norman’s moral compass, but Norman also keeps Emma from being as unhinged as she’s truly capable of being. She kinda listens to Ray but,, just not the same
While he was in Lambda, he dreamt of her (and everyone, ofc) every night. After a few months, his mental health was in baaaaad shape, and her hair was the only color he could really recall.
Especially after Goldy Pond, Emma developed a slightly concerning habit of talking aloud to Norman when she thought she was alone. Ray and Gilda were a lil worried, but Yuugo advised them to leave her be. She missed her best friend.
when Norman and Emma reunited at the Paradise Hideout, she was so happy to have him back that it took her an hour or two to process just how much he’d grown up. and then she was like Oh My Goodness
Because she didn’t fully understand his feelings for her until after he was dead, she had a hard time sorting out her feelings for him. It hurt too much. But then, he was actually alive, and she gets blasted with reality all at once and she knows she’s in deep shit. There are much more pressing matters, though, so she resolves to deal with it later, once they’re all safe.
Emma saw through his Minerva persona instantly, and it worried her. She could see that he was hurting. And it hurt her deeply that he refused to talk about it. The trust between them had evolved and twisted into something that was relative rather than absolute.
While Ray was experiencing the horrors and all stages of life in the Seven Walls, I like to think Emma had a conversation with the Norman she knew back at Grace Field. It was probably brief, and of course it took place in her own head so he was the idealized version of him that she’d created, but whatever they talked about led her to figure out how the Seven Walls works. Another “You’re right, Norman” moment
when the One said they wanted her family as the Reward, all she really knew was that she’d have to let them go. let him go. after she fought so hard to keep him. but, she’s Emma, and knew better than to think that would be the end. she knew the love she has for everyone would never truly leave her heart. she wants to believe in everyone and that includes herself. She knew if she loved him once she would love him again.
obviously, their ancestral counterparts were married. this is canon actually Shirai told me (<- lying)
He tried to confess the night before they raided GF, but she wouldn’t let him. She told him to tell her once they were in the human world. After all, she already knew.
She kept the Polaroid of them in her pocket, as established, to the point that she lowkey forgot about it. The Reward erased him from the photo, and it was so raggedy after living in her pocket. But she couldn’t bring herself to get rid of it. Just like before, she stared at it every night. She couldn’t shake the feeling that it was once a picture of someone she loved.
