When reading manga or light novels, or watching anime, we usually step into the shoes of the characters and experience the world with them, empathizing with how they feel.

However, the moment a scene involves "non-consensual contact" or "morally questionable behavior," some people suddenly switch modes. They pull themselves out of the story and start acting like a judge in a courtroom, declaring from the outside, "Yep, this action is unacceptable!" or "This character is the absolute worst!" It feels strangely contradictory and wasteful to enjoy a world's unique rules and character flaws most of the time, only to suddenly pull out the ruler of "real-world morals" to condemn specific moments.

There are valid reasons why modern moral standards are the way they are, and I think they make perfect sense. However, aren't there aspects of a story that remain hidden if we view it solely through the lens of those moral standards?

What is essential to realize here is that trying to understand *why* a character made such a bad choice is completely different from "forgiving" or "excusing" that bad action. And it is important to clearly separate the real world from the world of the story.

Deciding whether an action is right or wrong is just a trial. But peeking inside a character's mind to ask, "Why did this normally calm person panic and go completely out of control here?"—*that* is what reading and understanding a story is truly about. Accusing someone of "defending a predator" just because they try to analyze the reasoning only ends up narrowing their own enjoyment of reading.

It is easy to isolate a character's failure or embarrassing act as a single "dot" and criticize it. But behind that dot, there is always a flow of emotions—a "line"—such as "they panicked because they discovered a secret they never wanted to know," or "they acted recklessly out of a desperate need to escape reality."

If every character were morally perfect and always did the right thing, stories wouldn't be interesting at all. It's precisely because we follow the psychology (the lines) of human characters who fail and make mistakes that we can see the most delicious essence of a work: "Humans are complex and fascinating," or "How will they grow from this?"

I feel a bit sorry for the translator regarding the Volume 13 epilogue; he probably didn't catch the hidden meaning behind the Japanese. By the way, do people all over the world find this scene funny?

In this scene, Maomao goes to Jinshi's bedroom fully prepared to sleep with him. She approaches this following the traditional procedures a courtesan uses when giving away her virginity.

Maomao prepares extensively to ensure she does not get pregnant. she goes even further: she is prepared to abort the child if she does conceive, just so she won't cause any trouble or political scandal for Jinshi.

When Jinshi realizes the heavy, almost tragic resolve Maomao has brought into the room, he is deeply shaken. He reflects on his own thoughtlessness and feels ashamed. While Jinshi deeply desires to make love to Maomao, he wants it to be out of mutual love, not grim obligation. Controlling his desires, he decides to restrain himself and sends her back.

I love how this scene shows them both thinking of each other's well-being.

Note on "Honban nashi" (本番なし):

In this context, "no final act" (honban nashi) means satisfying Jinshi sexually through intimate acts without actual intercourse (penetration).

I completely understand this theory, and I agree it makes their romance beautifully angsty and compelling!

But I've been thinking about a different perspective. If that were true, wouldn't that be incredibly painful for her? Especially in the early stages of the story, the more Jinshi shows his affection and kindness, the more heartbreaking it would be. Normally, anyone would try to distance themselves to avoid getting hurt.

Yet, even early on, Maomao stays near him and honestly seems to feel safe and comfortable around him. Don't you think it’s a bit contradictory if she was consciously hiding a painful love?

Instead, I feel like Maomao isn't intentionally suppressing her feelings. Rather, she is simply completely oblivious and dense to her own romantic feelings at that point. Because she hasn't realized her own heart yet, she can naturally be by his side and feel safe without overthinking it.

Instead of her hiding a love, don't you think she was just being 100% honest with her annoying but comfortable feelings?
