I miss these days of innocence when it was easy to find satisfaction in simplicity (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

This elderly Asian couple was sitting on a park bench, looking as pleased and content in their own company. They quietly rose and walked away hand in hand. It reminded me of my own parents that left the black and white poverty in the Philippines to start anew and work hard for a better life here in the States. The States was a place where they could barely speak the language, had no family or friends, and had only the clothes on their backs; but they had each other. They struggled together. They had to work harder than the next to bring in that color they dreamt of as children. They have a more intricate definition of the word ‘sacrifice’. Just as content as that elderly couple seemed to be, I imagine my parents share the same contentment, not just for overcoming all the hardships, but for still having each other and creating a colored canvas for their children to continue painting on.
