mars didn't see himself as being a jerk, honestly. he's just holding his ground, and he's not about to buddy up with this guy of all people. it's not like it's out of some sort of grudge because of his district partner or something, he just honestly doesn't see joules as someone who would make a valuable ally. "do something about what?" he scoffs.
"look, i don't give a shit if you killed hy or whatever. but i've claimed this area, okay? so if you don't wanna fight, then keep. it. moving." mars is confident that if it did come down to a fight, he would easily be the winner.
Joules considered pressing the matter further but was this guy or that tree even worth it? Sure maybe he could win in a fight, but why risk putting himself in danger like that? Huffing, he nodded his head. "Fine, I'll keep going, but not cause I'm scared of you, but because I don't know if you're worth it, and because I have actual allies I need to go find."
Still, as Joules started to walk off, he kept his knife out and backed away to keep an eye on Mars to make sure that the other didn't try anything until he felt he was a safe distance away, before turning around and running off to go find Abel.

Abel was walking, desperate to find someone he could hide with, hide for as long as he could until— until the inevitable happened. He didn’t want to spend his last few moments alone.
He jumped slightly at the sudden jolt on his body until he recognised the voice and relaxed instantly.
Abel looked at Joules, at the blood stains and the obvious signs, and just wrapped his arms around him anyway. “S’ok, you did what you had to” because he could tell, and he knew exactly how it felt, to kill for your own life.
Joules relaxed into Abel, he knew he was telling him that to make him feel better, but Joules still felt absolutely horrible for it. He knew he had to do it if he wanted to win, but he still felt like he was now a different person, instead of fighting with him though, he chose to just rest his head against Abel, nodding. Arms lightly rubbing his.
"Did you get hurt at all? Are you ok? Did you get anything that might be helpful?"
mars eyes the other man carefully. he soon recognizes him as the district five tribute, the one that sheen had told him would die almost immediately. yet he was the one who managed to kill his district partner.
don't get him wrong, it's not like they'd been best friends or anything. he just thought this guy wasn't supposed to be any kind of threat. and based on the way he is talking, mars doesn't think he is. but can he just kill him, right here and right now? he's not so sure.
"no," he states firmly. "so keep it moving, yeah?" he calls out, still pointing his makeshift knife at him.
Joules furrowed his eyebrows when the other told him to keep it moving. Couldn't he tell that his legs were hurting and he wanted a break, from moving? What was it with these District One people being massive jerks? Huffing he waved his own actual knife around at the other tribute. "I don't want to, to keep it moving. So either do something about it or just deal with it." Being tough was the only way he could possibly win this thing.
If Mars tried anything well, Joules had a better weapon and had already killed one person from District One, he would do it again if he had to. "I really don't want to have to fight you though, so it would be nice if bygones could just be bygones."
gods, it's cold. so cold that it seeps into his very bones, chills him to the core. but he's managed to make himself a makeshift shelter and even better, he's sharpened a stone into a knife. it isn't much, but it's surely enough to end a life if need be. not like back at the cornucopia, where he simply snapped the neck of that girl from 12.
he hadn't meant for it to be that way but she was coming at him, wasn't she? and what other choice did he have but to kill her? because if he didn't, it could just turn around and end up biting him in the ass.
he's leaned up against a tree when he hears the familiar sound of crunching snow. whipping the makeshift knife out of his pocket, he holds it ready. his eyes widen and he spins around, looking for the source of the sound.
Joules was crunching in the snow, marching towards a tree he saw, maybe there was food on it. He didn't know if there were any fruit trees that actually grew fruit in the snow and the cold. That was when he saw someone standing against it holding a knife now cause they had already seen him. Pulling out how own knife that he had gotten from the one District One tribute, he was now getting close enough that he saw that this was their partner and that he was covered in their blood. They'd have no clue though that it was Joules who had killed their partner, maybe they didn't like their partner? Joules had barely seen his. Once he was close enough, he waved with his free hand.
"I don't......don't wanna fight you. I just.....does that tree have anything to eat?"
After meeting and talking with Gage, they had gone their separate ways. Joules still needed to find Abel, but he was glad to have seen someone else that he didn't have to fight with. She was nice, and kind, and better than this arena. So many people in here were better than it, and didn't deserve to be here. Still, the conversation with Gage had given him the motivation he had needed, to not give up and to keep going. He was walking, and that was when his eyes feel on the bright red suit with a yellow Nine on its back. And Joules went sprinting towards it.
"Abel! Abel! Abel!" When he saw the figure stop, and start to move towards him, Joules started running even faster, nearly tackling him to the ground, forgetting the blood, and his tear-stained face, he wrapped his arms around the other, and eventually the two of them ended up in a position on the ground where Joules was laying his head against Abel.

This was a desolate place, and Gage's body burned from the effort of running. She couldn't find shelter, and wasn't even sure what direction she was going in. She'd failed Wiley, already separated from the student she was prepared to die for. She tripped over her own boots and fell, hard on her knees against the snow, but Gage refused to cry. She wouldn't be seen crying in this Arena. She wouldn't give the spectators at home the satisfaction.
So it surprised her, then, to hear crying.
Wiley?
It couldn't be, but Gage felt delirious with the cold and the hope that surged through her, and she picked herself up and ran as best she could over to the muffled noise.
After killing the older tribute from One, Joules had taken back off running trying to find Abel and so far all he had found was nothing but snow and more snow. He was getting tired his arms burning from the use of them to beat his head in, his legs tired from running. Joules could feel himself starting to give up, and he collapsed into the snow on his back and just started to finally let himself cry. Cry from the situation he was in, cry because of what he had done, cry because of the pain he was in, cry because he just really missed his mom and he wanted to go home. That was until he heard someone running towards him again.....jumping from where he was, he drew one of the knives he had gotten from the man from One. Pointing it at the other...
"Stay! Stay right there! Please! Please!" He was pleading with them more than threatening them, hopefully, the fact he had a weapon and was covered in blood would stop them from trying to kill him. "I don't want to hurt you, I don't want to hurt anyone else......please.....please I can't hurt anyone else. I just......just wanna not die."

It had been terrifying getting changed into the arena uniform, it was meant for snow, so clearly the arena was going to be cold, or at least that's how it was explained to him. Stepping onto the platform, he kept trying to steady his breathing, he wasn't stupid, he was gonna die....he was gonna die.....he was eventually going to die. He reminded himself of that fact. He could make it a few days, he had to....to push Abel towards winning. Abel could win this again, he couldn't. He saw his odds, no one was betting on him, but well, Abel probably had people rooting for him. Actual rich Capitolites with lots of money. As the platform reached the top, he looked around, snow and mountains and rock, he tried to spot Abel, but it was hard. Instead, he just saw others who he hardly recognized. He would run, he had to run if he wanted to live, and he and Abel would just eventually find one another.....they seemed to have that draw to one another.
Five.........Four.....Three......Two......One.....the voice of the announcer boomed and once he hit zero everyone sprinted, so many ran towards the Cornucopia, Joules felt like he was the only person running away from it. He thought he was putting a good distance between it and him, eventually breaking into a clear path, it was less snow-covered and more rocky, but it would clearly get him to safety. Walking along it for maybe five or six minutes, he stopped to take a break from walking. His legs were starting to hurt and he just wanted to catch his breath, plopping to the ground onto his bottom, he lay against a rock catching his breath. Joules had to find Abel, he had to. It was the only way he was going to last more than a day. If he were with Abel to help him get through this all. Another maybe twenty or so minutes passed, when Joules heard someone bounding towards him, not sure who it was or where they were he tried to take off running too, but whoever it was they were faster.
He turned to look back, and he felt them slamming into him. When he heard the voice, he realized that it was one of the boys from One, the one who had already won one of these games.
"So you're the kid from Five, the Mayor's son? Figured I'd get one of the easy kills outta the way before I go on to win this thing." Joules struggled under his grip trying to break free from underneath him. "Two time Hunger Games champion, that's what I'm going for. Then Odair won't be the only special one." Joules could see he was barely paying attention to him as he spoke about his planned triumph, and he could feel the tears start to well up in his eyes, was he that pointless? That they weren't even going to pay attention to him as they killed him. "Are you seriously about to cry? Pathetic. Don't worry, won't be that much longer now." When they let go of his wrist, to grab something, Joules saw his chance, and reached for anything on the ground and that's when his fingers wrapped around a rock, and he brought it to the other boy's head as hard as he could.
He hit him again, a second time, knocking him off of him. He saw the blood splatter onto the snow and felt some of it hit his face. Joules wasted no time, climbing over to where he was and hitting again....and again...and again. Each time more and more blood splattered against his face, against his suit, against the snow. "FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU!"
Each time he hit the man from One, he'd yell it. He kept hitting and hitting and hitting, and each time he felt weaker and weaker, but just wanted to make sure he was dead. Joules finally stopped and collapsed next to his body. "I'm......I'm sorry I did that." He felt his eyes start to tear up again, wiping at them, smearing the blood on his face. "I'm.....I'm so sorry I did that......I don't, don't even know your name." What had he done? What did he do? He was a murderer, a monster. He had taken a life, a life, a human life. Sitting back up, Joules started going through his suit, where he found several knives, was this.....was this what he was planning on killing Joules with? Backing up a little from the other's body, put the knives into his pocket.
"I.....I'm sorry again....about this.....please don't be mad at me, please? I just.....I gotta....gotta go find Abel now."
“We could go on a real date then” Abel hummed in thought. He hadn’t been on a date in years. Usually he’d just find someone in a club and end up in their bed, sneaking off the next morning because it was never not awkward. He’d like to take Joules on a date though, pick his brain, see how it worked.
“I don’t think I’ll need it again” he laughed and used his foot to kick it away. “Half dressed, or not dressed at all? What are we thinkin?”
Joules smiled, "I'd.....I'd really like that, to go on a real date with you....see something outside of this tower with you." His hands settled on Abel's waist, holding him close, until he said that he didn't need it again, before kicking it away and mentioning if they should just be not dressed at all. A deep blush on Joules' face. Nodding his head, "I.....I think not dressed at all would be good? Since this could be our last night?"
When Abel gave Joules the ok, he lightly pushed him back onto the bed, watching as Abel lay there, Joules wasted no time in pulling off the rest of his clothes, letting Abel look upon his nakedness, before moving to undo Abel's clothing, his fingers fumbled a little, having never done this before. Still, it's like he told Abel, it could be their last night alive, and well......he wanted to experience something before he died. Chuckling a little he revealed the Victor to be wearing a pair of tiny pink boxer briefs.
"Pink is your color, you know that?" Finishing undressing Abel, Joules stopped to run his eyes over Abel. "You're so beautiful, your tattoos, you're like a mural." Running his tongue over his lips, he climbed on top of Abel, pressing their lips together, his face....his whole body was hot. Breaking the kiss, "Tonight is going to be perfect."
Abel smiled at Joules’ reply. When he’d first met the other tribute, he’d assumed him to be a bit of a prude, with all the fancy clothes and polite speech, so this was surprising for him, a good kind of a surprise though.
“None” he laughed. “I learned here after I’d won, s’like the only form of exercise I enjoy— well, that, and one other thing” he smirked.
Joules nodded his head when Abel said that it was the only form of working out that he liked, "I enjoy swimming too, it gets hot in District Five, and being the Mayor's son we actually have one of the only private swimming pools in the District."
Joules chuckled and raised an eyebrow when Abel said that there was another type of exercise he liked doing, waiting for an answer before the smirk implied what the Victor meant by that. Splashing Abel, "You're shameless, you know that?" Splashing him again, Joules swam off, looking back to see Abel swimming after him.
Neptune steadied her heartbeat - it would not do to get excited. Especially if something was happening. No, she needed to remain calm and composed, ready to spring at a moment's notice. As she turned her head, the full contraption of her dress turned annoyingly with her. "So it's possible D5 is still up and running?" she said gently.
"Is it possible that there's just been... an interruption?" Almost as if to confirm what she was saying before Joules could, the lights flickered again. "Do you think this is manmade?"
Joules furrowed his brows and pursed his lips a little at his question that District Five was still operating, it was possible, but the idea that they would actively shut off power to the Capitol....that that was treason, and it meant rebels would have gotten control of several important points of infrastructure. An interruption was completely unlikely though. It was designed that there would never be such any interruptions.
"This......this has to be manmade. There's no way it could be anything else. The weather would have to be so bad we'd already be feeling the effects of that kind of storm, or the Capitol would have been prepared for it." Rubbing the back of his next, worry starting to creep into him over his parents. "Excuse me for a moment." Putting the water he was holding down, Joules made for a quiet area where he could contemplate what could have possibly happened to his family, if anything did happen to them.

“Maybe” Abel nodded into Joules’ shoulder. Maybe. That would be nice, or would it? Postponing only meant delaying the inevitable, elongating this feeling of purgatory, the wait before inevitable death— Abel didn’t know how long he’d be able to handle this. “Cancelled all together would be nicer” he decided, only realised he’d said it aloud when he heard himself laughing.
“Half dressed is good” he smiled, pulled a way a little to reach for his shirt buttons. “I can be half dressed too, we’ll be even then, fair?” He asked, but he’d already undid the very few buttons that had been closed and shrugged the silk off so it fell to the floor.
Joules chuckled when he heard Abel laugh, the idea....of the games being canceled was....nice....very nice, but they both knew that wasn't going to happen, not until the streets of the Capitol were all in all-out war, which clearly wasn't the case, they'd be able to hear it.....feel it....see it. Still, Joules wasn't going to say that and ruin the mood. "Yeah, canceling it altogether would be really nice."
Joules went to say something when he was already watching Abel undo his shirt, eyes scanning over Abel's body...his tattoos. How beautiful he was. "Half-dressed is very good." He whispered it, hands moving up Abel's back. "But you shouldn't leave your shirt on the floor, it'll get wrinkly."
There was no fight as his body entered the water, the water dampening him so that his hair dripped down his face once they were up and able to take a breath, both from being submerged, but also from each other’s mouths.
“We’re giving people a show” he muttered then, laughing as he nodded to a very stern looking peacekeeper who was doing his best to avert his eyes.
Joules casually used his hand to move Abel's hair from his face, before he looked over at the guard and chuckled a little, probably the first time he laughed since the Reaping. Shrugging his shoulders at the statement,
"We're tributes yeah? Might as well get used to giving people a show. Now like we actually have much choice in the matter." Their whole death, or Joules' anyway, was going to be a sick show to Panem after all. "Did you do a lot of swimming back in District Nine?"
It wasn't Four's most original concept - Neptune's dress funneled up into what was being described as an "iridescent water spout" around her head. In a way, Neptune missed the simplicity of her generation's outfits: clean lines and exuding luxury. Nowadays things were so... costumey.
The lights flickered, and her eyes flicked up to assess. Joules spoke behind her, moments before the building plunged into momentary darkness. She turned to him, her eyes alight with hopeful suspicion.
"That's what I thought," she said. "And they don't go down. At least... not that I've ever known them to." She selected her next words carefully, knowing there were microphones all over the room. "Could a... could the weather? Cause that? I thought the dams were built to withstand just about everything nature could throw at them."
Maybe, just maybe... maybe something was happening.
Joules shook his head at her question, no the weather never brought down the power in the Capitol or in Five or in One. It was normal for the other outer districts though, his father would often talk about how easy it was for places like Twelve to lose power, but that didn't matter as long as the power stayed on in the Capitol.
"No, its designed so that other sources of power kick on if the main generators hit below a certain level of output that's still high enough that you wouldn't even be able to tell anything was wrong. This hasn't happened before.....well..." Except during the Dark Days was his first thought, but he didn't want to say that out loud.
"I have no clue how this could have happened." Were the rebels that close? Were they going to save them? End the games? Joules hoped it was true, but he knew there was no way the Capitol would allow that, not unless Vox managed to seize control of the entire country, and there was no possible way they could have moved that quickly.
After his interview, which had went as well as it possibly could have, he found the nearest bottle of anything-- vodka-- not his go to, but he'd take just about anything at this stage, and downed almost half in just one gulp. His hands were shaky, vision foggy, and the thoughts in his head were magnified, flashbacks to the cells of his first arena, Eli dying on the screen in front of him, he couldn't let it linger any longer, so he downed more of the bottle just before the power gave out.
He had to take the stairs due to the power outage, and it was a little humiliating that his lungs were about to explode just as he reached the fifth floor. He psychically couldn't make it any further, but then it popped into his head that this is where Joules must be. The boy who had kissed him out of nowhere, the one with the cheekbones and the floppy hair, the boy he couldn't stop thinking about in between the nightmare he was living.
"My floor is too far away" he admitted in a slight slur, melting into the hug partly because he was having a hard time finding his footing, but also because it was so warm and nice. "S'ok, we can be scared together" he smiled into Joules' shoulder, lingering as long as he could.
Joules' eyebrows furrowed together, Abel was slurring his words and he could smell the alcohol on him. Still, he held him in the hug, maybe Abel needed this more than him. This was his last night before going back into the arena for a second time. Hand moving to the back of Abel's head, he petted at it lightly. "Shhh, I got you. Who knows maybe.....maybe the games will have to be postponed or something?" It was a silly idea, there was no way that would happen this games was supposed to be a show of force.
Nuzzling his face into Abel's neck. "I'll keep you safe, Abel. So long as we're in here together, yeah? I'll keep you safe, you can keep. me safe. Together." Chuckling a little, "I am uhhh half dressed though, sorry about that, I wasn't expecting company."
Abel just laughed. He knew he looked weak, he was thin, the bags under his eyes were evident, and he was a kind of pale that had him looking almost translucent. But Joules seemed nice, so he wouldn't call him out on his lies just yet.
He laughed again when Joules called him cute, wasn't quite expecting such a return on his flirting, usually people either got weird, or just smiled, but Joules was giving it back to him, so this was a lot more fun. "Allies?" he didn't have to think too long before he nodded his agreement. The more friends in there the better, and it helped that this one was nice to look at.
He wasn't expecting the kiss, but he felt himself melt a little as their lips connected, groaning lightly when it ended all too soon. Abel didn't answer, just leaned back in to connect them again, smiling into Joules' mouth. "Nothing dumb about it at all" he mumbled then, leaning his forehead onto Joules', a silly smile sitting on his face.
Joules nodded his head when Abel repeated the word allies, glad that he was on board with it and nodding his head back. He blushed, deeply when able said that there wasn't dumb about the kiss before leaning his head against Joules' smiling a little more, he leaned in again, kissing Abel a second time. Joules would be dead soon, so why not? Why not have a little bit of fun before the death came. Gripping Abel's hands, he pulled him into the water with him. Smiling as they resurfaced.

The interviews had just wrapped up and then the lights had gone down for good, which made Joules nervous. That wasn't supposed to happen. Why was it happening? He knew every procedure in place to make sure the lights never went down in the Capitol, especially during the games. They usually diverted power from the outer districts to the Capitol to adjust for the extra consumption. Had something happened? Something had to have happened in Five. If the fighting was in Two, Five wasn't that far away. Was it spreading? Was his family ok? Would the Capitol think they were traitors? Would the rebels think they were too loyal? All these questions were racing through his head as they got marched back to their floor.
His pajamas were currently laid out on his bed, and he was pulling off the suit he'd been wearing during his interview, undoing the last button on his shirt, he was pulling it off when he heard someone coming into his room, turning to face them he was shocked to see Abel.
"Abel? What are you doing here? You're supposed to be on your floor. We could get in trouble for this. You could get in trouble for being here." And yet despite what he was saying, Joules found himself pulled towards Abel, wrapping his arms around him. "I'm scared, over these power outages."
Joules didn't get his suit, his Stylist tried to explain that jewels glowed in the dark and the different colors were supposed to represent the different sources of power, solar, wind, and hydroelectric. At least it wasn't that ugly, and it actually covered him up, unlike his chariot outfit. He had just wrapped up his interview and was now standing by Neptune watching the rest go on behind stage. Then the lights flickered, ever so subtly. To the tributes who didn't know anything about power, it probably meant nothing, but to Joules who had been raised on listening to his dad rant about his fears of power outages and how it would have looked on Five, he knew exactly what it meant. He was whispering to Neptune,
"We're about to lose powe-" And then down went the lights, before they came back after a moment or two. "That's not supposed to happen in the Capitol. All of our best dams run twenty-four hours a day to power the Capitol."
