Thomas Hirschhorn
Relational Aesthetics: Much of Hirschhorn’s work can be categorized within the genre of “relational aesthetics” (Bourriaud)—a contemporary understanding of work that focuses on relationships between people as the subject.
Tactics: Hirschhorn makes large, multi-sensual installation spaces where participants can interact with the space and each other. His materials range from found object collections, posters, food, furniture, sound, etc…
Location: These installations are often set up outside the gallery setting—in public space or warehouses, in order to engage with people in a context outside of the formal and institutional.
Example: “24th Foucault”, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2004. This installation took on the model of the ‘community center’ with seven different spatial elements: 1.) a 24 hour auditorium 2.) a library and documentation center 3.) an archive 4.) audio and video library 5.)an exhibition space 6.) a shop 7.) a bar. This space was open 24 hours a day, providing opportunity for a variety of people to interact in a variety of ways. The installation, along with most of Hirschhorn’s work, not only pays homage to historical philosophers and thinkers (in this case, Foucault) but brings attention to social and cultural issues as manifested through human relationships.
