Why do people procrastinate?

We procrastinate because we either (1) lack motivation; or (2) lack clarity.

That's pretty much it.

When you lack motivation, the task you are putting off just doesn't sound as exciting as doing something else. You see, when you are excited about a task, you don't procrastinate doing it. You get right to it. If your year-end bonus came in and it was $100,000 -- you'd go cash that check as fast as possible. You'd be motivated!

When you lack clarity, it's like having decision fatigue. You're not sure where or how to get started on a big project. Or, you have so many awesome ideas and projects that you're not sure which one to pick from and so you pick none.

What would you do with $86,400?

If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400, that carried over no balance from day to day, allowed you to keep no cash in your account, and every evening canceled whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day, what would you do? It carries over no balances. It allows no overdrafts. If you fail to use the day’s deposit, the loss is yours. There is no going back and no drawing against tomorrow. So invest your seconds wisely in what truly matters!
