My rating:
4 of 5 stars
Could I tell you with any certainty what actually went down in these stories? Absolutely not. And usually, this would irritate me. It's some people's cup of tea, but I am absolutely not a fan of ambiguous, open-ended stories. I poured through the bonus sketches at the end of this collection hoping for some clarity, but found none. However, despite being initially frustrated upon finishing the book, I found it difficult to give it less than four stars.
The most obvious reason is probably that it is very pretty. The art is dark and evocative and leads me to believe that, although there are unanswered questions all over the place, Becky Cloonan is telling us exactly as much as she wants to tell us. There's undeniable skill in every panel. While the stories aren't technically connected, she maintains a mood and tone that makes all three stories feel like they belong in the same collection.
Although I closed the book frustrated, the stories--or at least the melancholy mood garnered from the stories-- stayed with me after. While I didn't always know what exactly was happening, I knew how I felt about what was happening. There was a lot of skimming back through the pages trying to piece together what happened with limited success. But I certainly felt things. Also, it was pretty.
I'm quite fond of the steady rise in romantic comics as of recent years. Two of the three tales from this collection (from what I can gather) seem to have central love stories that are extramarital affairs, which I'm not fond of. But still. Pretty.
Also, everyone is beautiful. The author dedication at the beginning of the book to those who have crushes on their own characters, and I see where she gets that. She made everyone gorgeous.
While my objective feelings about the whole book seem mixed, I still can't seem to justify giving it less than four stars. It made me feel things, and it was well-executed. I never got the impression that the author wasn't delivering exactly the story she intended, which speaks to her skill as a visual storyteller. I'm definitely excited to see what else she puts out.
Also, pretty.
