I remember summer days in Falmouth, Cape Cod. Swimming out to the floating dock at New Silver, feeling the wood beneath my feet and sometimes at night the dock rocking gently and the magic of it. I remember times in Wellfleet, the people there that made the place what it is, who I still think about and miss, and the power and majesty of the ocean there. Midnight bonfires that were tradition. I love the way memory plays in the mind when you reach for it. I've always been drawn to water. (at Wyoming)

While backpacking last week, I went for a morning run to explore a big river eddy I had seen on maps while studying the terrain before the trip. I left camp around 8am and headed out through the forest, the light dancing along the trail, and not a soul in sight. When I got to the eddy there was a large beach guarding the entrance to a stunning whitewater canyon. As Kala and I wandered along this beach I saw the grizzly prints first, and they were fresh. Still wet with moisture where the sand had been disturbed. As I followed them up the beach I found this spot where a set of wolf prints joined the grizzly's for a short while. I stood in amazement and wonder, and felt the sun, and swam in the river, Kala running circles through the forest and sand, and thought this was exactly the place I wanted to be 🐾 (at Teton Wilderness)

Beach day.

Buckskin Bills homestead at five mile bar on the Main Fork of the Salmon is an incredible place. If you look for it on a map, you would see it is in the heart of the massive backcountry of Central Idaho, just above the South Fork confluence. It rests on the edges of a huge pond-like river eddy, with a beachfront of soft sand. It is a perfect harbor. The house itself, more of a compound is composed of unique angles of old timber, surrounded by rolling lawns and gardens, all in the heart of huge Idaho wilderness. There is an amazing museum on site where you can see a variety of tools and knives that Bill made by hand, as well as photos from across the years of his life. The stone structure in the right of the frame here is actually a tower he built to defend his homestead from the government, which had threatened to take it from him. All in all an incredible awe-inspiring place, that also has the good fortune in the modern day of providing stout and ice cream floats to weary river travelers.
