Considering the impact Jon had left on her when they’d met, Wanda was surprised she hadn’t noticed sooner that he’d been the one to approach her; but it explained the calmness she’d felt. “Oh, z’hank you.” Her smile was instantaneous as she turned to face him, grateful for his reassurance. “I don’t celebrate, z’hat’s why I asked. I’m helping Caroline, and her brief was very specific.”
Satisfied that she was almost done, Wanda closed the box of baubles before addressing Jon again. “I hope you’ve been alright. It’s been so long, I was starting to get a little worried,” she admitted, a slight redness tinting her cheeks.
Jon found himself a little taken aback by her smile, the warmth in it, when she turned toward him. The last time they’d met, she’d had grief in her eyes, her shoulders carrying something heavy. He, of course, had never asked what that something was, considering the war had just ended, and everybody had been struggling with something. But she held herself differently now. Not entirely healed, but lighter. She was beautiful. Blinking at her for a moment, mesmerised, he eventually nodded at the explanation, knowing that was very characteristic of Caroline. “Well, I think she’d be pleased. For someone that doesn’t celebrate, ya know exactly how a tree should look. All you need now’s a little snow.” He smiled.
“You were?” Considering they barely knew each other, he initially assumed she was exaggerating. But she did not seem like the type, and once he’d noticed her coyness, he chose to accept it as truth. “Oh, you don’t need to go worryin’ about me, love. I’m hardly worth the fuss.” He meant it, but he still smiled warmly at her, deeply pleased to learn she’d thought of him just as he’d thought of her. “You remember those siblings I mentioned? I managed to find ‘em, eventually. Some of ‘em, anyway, so I brought ‘em back here. Was hard to make it feel like a home here without a family.” In truth, Jon had found himself feeling overbearingly lonely, and without focus. It didn’t matter that he’d always been independent, or on the outside of his family circle. A wolf without a pack still struggled, and he’d missed so much of the Rebels’ fight, and lives, he hadn’t been sure where to start fitting in with them again. “But that’s enough about me. How are you? How’s Pietro? You look very well.”
Considering the twins didn’t celebrate Christmas, Wanda had no experience with decorating trees. But after destroying the first home she’d been given back in January, she was indebted to Caroline and her forgiveness, so had offered her services to help prepare the town for the holidays. She was happy to do it, but was struggling with self-doubt as to whether or not her work was any good, especially considering the vampire’s high standards. “Do you z’hink z’his looks alright?” Wanda had sensed someone behind her, so had questioned them without turning, hanging up one of the last baubles as she did so.
“I think it looks beautiful,” he replied, smiling at the fact he’d been caught out watching on. Admittedly, she’d been the one to catch his eye and not the tree, as she’d done so once already before. And Jon hadn’t been able to get her out of his head since. “You’re doin’ a good job with that.”
“Alright. I can agree to z’hat,” Wanda replied, her smile growing as she spoke. She found his approach to the situation refreshing, and calming. Almost as though it’d been a good thing they’d collided. She found herself wishing she could enter his mind space, so that she could get a better grasp of his aura. But just as he was, she vowed to be respectful - which included granting him full privacy of his thoughts. She’d just have to get to know him the old fashioned way. “But I’m — fine, z’hank you. I am,” Wanda nodded, confirming it for herself. “Just trying to find my way around. For me, z’his is new.”
She blinked, watching him intently for a moment, acknowledging that he must be new here too. There was no chance he’d been someone that had previously passed her by, his presence was far too strong for that; in a positive way. “How are you?” She quickly asked, worried that she hadn’t instantly returned the question.
He collected the last item, returning it to her basket, and she returned to her standing position. “No more apologies,” she agreed, before deciding to tease him. “Sorry, for apologising.” His next comment took her by surprise, however, and for once it her cheeks that flushed scarlet, and not her eyes. “Oh. Z’hank you. I’m from District Two, but not z’he main part. I lived in z’he mountains, with my twin brother, and our parents. Z’hey were travellers before z’hey settled z’here, hence my accent.” Usually, talking about home made her sad, but Jon’s compliment had a happy lasting effect.
“We have a deal, then,” Jon nodded once in acknowledgement before holding out a hand for her to shake. Perhaps a part of him just wanted to touch her again, to see if he’d feel the same intriguing sensation; but a more rational thought assured him it was just etiquette. Jon always shook on his promises, after all. He wasn’t entirely convinced with her response, considering it was clear she was still wary of her surroundings. But he did notice she was a lot less on edge once she’d snapped out of whatever haze she’d been in prior to their collision. “You are?” He questioned, just in case she’d budge. “You sure of that?” It wasn’t that he wouldn’t trust her word, it’s just that her eyes seemed far away sometimes, and her heartbeat sounded skittish. “Do ya mean to the town, or shopping? I understand that, though. I’m new ‘round here, too. Were ya with the Rebels?” Jon was sure he hadn’t crossed her path before.
The question caught him off guard. Many things about her had. “How am I?” For a moment, he found himself grinning, amused. “I don’t… I’m not sure what I have to say, really. I’m alive and in good health. I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.” His smile slipped then, unable to understand why he felt so empty. “I 'spose I’m… tryin’ to find my way ‘round,” he quoted her, attempting another smile.
“You’re killin’ me, woman,” he laughed. “You’d go ‘round like this for hours, wouldn’t ya?” Jon, of course, noticed the way her cheeks reddened. He rather enjoyed seeing it, especially as he hadn’t been expecting it. It was nice to know he could still have that effect on someone, that his charm was intact. He’d been incredibly awkward with women in the past, and was glad to know he hadn’t entirely reverted in the absence of non-familial company. “You have a twin brother? You’re lucky, to have a sibling so close. I’m still tryin’ to track mine down.” He nodded as he listened, recognising the parts of the mountains she meant. “I’d heard a community lived in those mountains. It’s an honour to meet someone from there. I’m Jon. Jon Snow.”

“I’m fine,” Wanda muttered, now flustered. “Please, don’t apologise. Z’his was my fault, I’m sorry.” She smiled with her apology, knowing that had she been paying attention, it wouldn’t have caused the collision in the first place. She needed to refocus on her surroundings, and not reach out to Pietro. Her twin would be fine for a few minutes. “I’m a little distracted,” she admitted, collecting the last of her groceries. But as she reached out for the final dropped item, Jon did the same, and their hands brushed together. As a repeat of before, a few moments passed before either of them broke the contact. She looked up at him shyly, shaking her head in her embarrassment. “Sorry.”
“We’ll have to meet in the middle then, and say it was both our faults. I can’t have ya taking all the blame,” he smiled. After all, he was a werewolf with enhanced senses, and should’ve been able to avoid this collision entirely if his mind hadn’t also been elsewhere. He nodded at her explanation as he collected items, relating to the behaviour entirely. Jon seemed to spend every waking moment wondering how to forge a new life here, since the one he’d dreamt of with a particular blonde had passed him by. “Gotcha. Is everything alright, though?”
Their hands met, his skin against hers once again, and Jon found himself intrigued by the interaction. She wasn’t watching him, hair falling over her shoulder, but he was certainly watching her, a mixture of what he believed to be embarrassment and surprise crossing her features.
She was beautiful — of that, there was no doubt. He wondered if she knew it. Suddenly, he longed to reach out and tuck some of her hair behind her ear, if only to see her face better. "Please, let me,” Jon broke the silence, clearing his throat as he grabbed the final package. What was going on with him? “You’ve gotta stop apologisin’. We agreed to meet in the middle, right?” Getting to his feet, he stood there awkwardly for a few moments, fumbling with his hands. “Your accent is very beautiful, y‘know. Where are ya from?”
Being in Pietro’s arms for weeks had been a necessity, they had months of lost time to make up for, including a birthday, and a lot of trauma to work through. But naturally, they were beginning to run out of supplies, so Wanda had offered to visit the store for them both. It was hardly grand, just scraped together essentials that some rebels had gathered together in a run down building, but that’s what the twins were used to anyway. It felt more like home. As she walked around, her mind was locked on Pietro’s, constantly checking up on him to ensure his safety. But due to her being so focused on someone elsewhere, she knocked into a fellow customer, dropping her own basket to the floor. Scrambling to pick up her items, Wanda glanced up as she did so, muttering her apology. “Scuze.”
“Fuck,” Jon breathed, his hands reaching out instinctively to halt the other person. They still collided, but it wasn’t as hard as it could have been, fingers unintentionally gripping her waist. They locked eyes, and a few moments passed in silence. Suddenly realising himself, Jon blinked and let go, the woman now beginning to collect her things. “I’m so sorry,” he continued, bending down to help her. “You alrigh’?”
