“Do you like me, Intak-ssi?” Theo glared from the car window, crouching down to meet levels with Intak in the driver seat. “Because if you do, now’s the time to say it.”
Intak stared blankly, the words caught in his throat. It was like Taeyang was waving the bait right in front of him so he could reach out and grab it, but his body was paralyzed. “I—I think we’re really good friends..” Was all Intak managed to mutter out.
Taeyang’s expression furrowed with a bit of annoyance. “Okay.” A pause. “Good.” He huffed as he stood up again; “Goodnight.”
A sense of dread washed over Intak completely.
Intak watched as Theo turned his back and walked up to his front door, slumping his shoulders and practically melting into the driver’s seat as he rested his head on the steering wheel. “Fuck.” He let out, defeated.
He turned his head to the backseat, eyes fixated on his backpack. Specifically on the open zipper where a small, rectangular box with an eye-catching red design on it peaked out. The simple thought made him let out a laugh.
Turning his head, he changed his focus to Taeyang’s empty porch, but his attention span didn’t last long. Before he even thought it through, he pulled the One Wish Willow out of his backpack, and scratched at the narrow end of the packaging. As it fell into his open palm, a cartoonish, 8-bit jingle played while the white part intertwined with the plastic twig lit up. He slightly jolted back, not having expected an intro, and gave the box one last glance before setting it on his lap and holding the stick with both hands, and taking a deep breath;
“I wish Choi Taeyang loved me more than anyone in the fucking world.”
With a quick snap, he stared at one of the now broken pieces of the stick in his hand and scoffed. “Yeah, right.” he mumbled to himself as he took his keys out of his pocket to start up his car.
The sound of the engine roaring filled his ears as he went to take one last glance at Taeyang’s house, but this time the sight before him was the last thing he expected.
Theo’s dark silhouette was stood there, staring in Intak’s direction. The porch lights worked against his favor as Theo was closer to the stairs down than the front door, meaning they provided no light to his features. He looked like an eery dark figure, unmoving as Intak stared in disbelief.
“What the fuck..?” Intak kept staring at Theo’s silhouette until it started getting closer. He rapidly approached Intak’s car, causing him to react and hide the now broken One Wish Willow in his backpack, which he then followed with throwing it into his backseat.
As Theo leaned down to the window with an expectant expression, Intak tried to beat him to anything he might’ve had to say; “Um, hey, uh— I just had to.. pull up directi-“
“You said you had something for me?” Taeyang interrupted Intak’s terrible excuse, completely unfazed. He blinked and rested his hand on the beltline trim, waiting for Intak to react. The younger boy stared back, mouth agape, as he connected the dots inside his head. “Um… yeah. I—I left it at home.”
“Okay.” Theo responded flatly, blank but acknowledging. He stared long and deep at Intak with an unreadable face.
Intak obviously broke eye contact first, the subconscious guilt and nerves overwhelming his senses. “Uh.. I can bring it to work tomorrow.” He offered with a polite smile, trying to sound more upbeat.
Taeyang’s expression twisted into a disappointed one, wavering his eyes from Intak. “Oh.. okay.” A slight pout formed on his lips, striking Intak right in the heart with a twinge of guilt.
They both fell silent, yet Theo didn’t move.
Intak let out an awkward chuckle. “Okay.. goodnight.” Taeyang didn’t miss a beat, quickly countering him; “Maybe you wanna come inside?” He locked eyes with Intak again, the corners of his eyesbrows knitting together. “I mean, I did just lose my dog, Intak.” He slightly shrugged his shoulders.
Intak stared back with confusion, moving back as if his body physically felt the force of Theo’s statement. “..You lost your dog?”
Theo stared back at him for just a second too long, before looking just as confused. “Oh, wait.”
His eyes darted around, as if his surroundings would give him clues for what to say next. “Uhh..”
He quickly looked back up, and nodded as if he was reassuring Intak as he stammered out. “I mean—I mean, you lost your dog.” Intak was at a loss for words with every new sentence from Theo’s mouth.
“I’m so sorry.” Taeyang’s eyes went soft, still staring at Intak. “I’m so sorry for your loss.” He spoke with a soft voice, patting the inner car door molding, to emphasize his previous words. “Do you.. Should we— Do you wanna come inside? Or…” He trailed off.
Intak’s face was blank, completely lost. He quickly glanced to the box sticking out like a sore thumb from his backpack as he failed to fully shove it inside once more.
“Theo-hyung?” Intak stared at him with wide eyes. “Are you okay?” Nerves and genuine concern bled through his words as he cautiously spoke, a worried look painted on his face.
“Are you okay?” Taeyang quickly responded, repeating the question back with his eyebrows low, blinking repetitively. “Am I okay? Because of the dog?” Intak questioned.
Theo stared for a long couple of seconds, looking completely lost, before suddenly nodding as his face lit back up slightly. “Yeah.”
“Yeah, I’m fine-“ Intak breathed roughly, almost sounding like a laugh, before Theo interrupted him once again; “Why don’t you come inside? And.. we can have some drinks and… talk about your dog.” He spoke calmly with a genuine, caring smile on his face. “Yeah.” He shook his head, still with a soft smile on. “I’m sorry.. Yeah.”
Each one of Taeyang’s words sounded eerier, and his face seemed to struggle with settling on one expression.
Intak’s laughed lightly, feeling nervous. “Theo-hyung, I’m— confused.. I think you’re drunk.”
Theo’s mouth widened into a smile as he playfully waved his hand in response to Intak’s statement. “No! I’m not act—“
Out of nowhere, as if someone flipped a switch, Taeyang’s body went rigid. His eyes widened as he rapidly looked around at his surroundings. “Wait— What the fuck?!” He quickly gained his smile back, slowly looking back at Intak with teasing eyes. “I’m acting so weird.” Intak sat frozen in his seat, watching Theo’s spasmodic behavior. “Are you okay..?”
“This is SO weird!” Theo said with a laugh, lifting the tips of his fingers from the door’s beltline trim.
Intak awkwardly forced a laugh in response; “What the fuck?”
“No!” Taeyang shook his head, “No, no!” He said between giggles that escaped his throat, quickly prancing over to the driver’s side.
Intak’s heart caught in his throat as he slowly turned with fear to the window on his side. Theo opened the door, reaching towards Intak. “Hyung, what are you doin—“ “Come on!” Theo said cheerfully, trying to unbuckle Intak’s seatbelt. Intak watches his hands, unmoving. “What the fuck?”
This stops Theo in his tracks, looking up at Intak while still leaning over with half of his body in the car. Intak looks back, feeling the shells of his ears getting warmer from the close proximity.
Taeyang pulls his body back out and crosses his arms. “Actually, no.” He exclaimed, sounding like a child that didn’t get their way. Intak looked up at him, mixed with a feeling of shock and just utter confusion. “Wh—What are you doing?” He said between a laugh.
Theo crouched back down, moving quickly, settling his hands onto his knees while leaning his face close to Intak as he looked at him with a wide smile. “I know what you’re trying to do~”
