VIRTUAL VISITA IGLESIA 2022 - Day 15⁣ ⁣San Agustin, Bantay, Ilocos Sur⁣ ⁣ The church of Bantay is special for historical ang ecclesiastical reasons. The Neo-Gothic architecture is uncommon for colonial churches in the Philippines, the bellfry being a more famous landmark than the church itself is especially unique as well. The facade is richly graphic filled with lancet arches wherever an opening is present and even those without. The twin bellfries rising on either sides are squat and comes up to the central pediment making the composition generally wider than it is tall. It also houses one of the venerated coronadas of Ilocandia - Apo Baket or Our Lady of Charity. Interesting that another image bearing the same title is another coronada in Agoo a truly Ilocano devotional to our Lady. ⁣ ⁣ The belltower once used as a watchtower for the town rises on a hill beyond the church's patio. Its a lonely sentinel on a hill - enigmatic and a must-see for any visit to the town. ⁣ ⁣ SEVEN BECAME FIFTEEN. a complete visita iglesia circuit stretched from holy week to #divinemercysunday.  It started as as a way to keep the tradition alive while on #lockdown but it became a spiritual and aesthetic journey deliberating what made the cut and personal reflections for each church.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ Its still all from Luzon which probably means i need to go out further. VIRTUAL VISITA IGLESIA 2022 - Day 14⁣ San Gregorio Magno, Majayjay, Laguna⁣ ⁣ The church of Majayjay is as cinematic as they come. Its a tall church that rest on a sloping site in the foothills of #Banahaw, and as for visuals go, they dont come more photogenic as this. The brick facade glows pink in the sunlight, the towering bellfry almost reminds one of the spires of old European medieval churches. Inside, the retablos reflect the soaring verticality of the exteriors. ⁣ ⁣ Majayjay is a town of filled with built heritage. Houses of different vintages abound but sadly now missing the now demolished Ordoveza house. A visita chapel just nearby the church remains. VIRTUAL VISITA IGLESIA 2022 - Day 12⁣ Santa Clara de Asis, Tigaon, Camarines Sur⁣ ⁣ The Franciscans brought a distinctive style of churches when they evangelized Bicolandia. Using local materials like volcanic stone was a given but the architectural composition of a central belfry tower incorporated in the facade is a feature that we will see in numerous colonial churches in the region like Lagonoy in Camarines Sur, Legazpi cathedral, and Barcelona in Sorsogon among many others. One of these churches though is the church of Tigaon where the style is made more feminine and less militaristic. Instead of a spire for the tower, the central belfry is a domed tower with arched windows. The facade is divided by both pilasters and a frieze but 2 pairs of large, freestanding, double-height columns at the main door hold up the tower above. ⁣ ⁣ I would say that the facade is highly original and the weathered patina of its plastered facade ages the church beautifully. VIRTUAL VISITA IGLESIA 2022 - Day 10⁣ San Juan Bautista, Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, Naga, Camarines Sur⁣ ⁣ The Metropolitan Cathedral of Naga is the seat of the Archdiocese of Naga - one of the 4 oldest in the country. In September it hosts the venerated image of Ina - Our Lady of Penafrancia during her novenario when she is transferred from her basilica into the cathedral in a display of devotion almost akin to the the traslacion of Quiapo for the Nazareno. The Penfrancia festivities finishes off with a procession to the local river where a fluvial procession brings her back into her Basilica outside the poblacion. ⁣ ⁣ The church is massive and the composition of the facade amplify the scale of the space within. A large pedimented facade that curves gracefully to its sides span the entire facade while twin l belltowers jut out as if asserting themselves from the main volume that engulfs it. Twin pilasters are the main dividing device that separates the facades into bays while bands of friezes and balustrades establish the levels.⁣ ⁣ Very few cathedral complexes have a nice collection of buildings and open spaces such as here in Naga. For one, mason's marks supposedly etched into the stonework lend an air of mystery to this structure as well as its builders. The volcanic landscape lends itself to the church with the black stones used in its construction. The detached belltower is festooned with carvings and decorations that are unusual attention given the prominence but austerity of the church right beside it. ⁣ The camposanto down the road just outside the town is another ecclesiastical building not to be missed. It was declared a National Historical Landmark for its ties to the revolution and the subterrenean feature makes it a unique #camposanto.⁣ ⁣ The complex has an octagonal field bordered by decorated walls housing the niches. The camposanto is on one side directly across the main axis from the entrance. The facade is #Baroque with a central espadana which the gracefully morphs into scrolls at either sides. VIRTUAL VISITA IGLESIA 2022 - Day 4 San Antonio de Padua, Pila, Laguna⁣ #Pila is a hidden gem. It may not be as famous nor as old as other historic towns but a visit to the town - the plaza  in particular,iis an experience that will inspire and delight any visitor. #LaNobleVilladePila is the perfect example of a Spanish town plan but surrounded mostly by American period structures. The crowning glory is arguably the plaza, a wide lawn of green where houses of different vintages look out on to. The Presidencia and the church opposite one another is made prominent though the size of the plaza makes them less imposing. The church of Pila is a reminder of the transfer of the old town to its current location. It is the first church in the country dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua.  It has a modest design, classy, elegant with a triangular pediment facade divided into tiers.
