Selkie. A mythological creature found in Irish folklore. Are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. Theyâre magnificent.

I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else.
Neil Gaiman (via quotemadness)
I unabashedly loved this scene.
My favorite thing about this is that Dottie is getting fucking object concealment tips from these genius food-stealing women and sheâs probably using that knowledge to hide idek small thermonuclear devices in her bra or something. Probably went back to the Red Room afterward like âomg girls let me teach you what I learned in America. Itâs vital we teach our tiny assassins to knit, I met a woman who successfully concealed a whole chicken in her sweater, theyâll need this kind of ingenuity in the field.â
I also really love that this is a large group of women who unabashedly like food and eating. None of them are going âoh no my diet, what if I get fat?â, theyâre like âI CAN FIT A  CHICKEN IN MY SWEATER AND THEN LATER, I HAVE A WHOLE CHICKEN FOR ME.â
Iâve reblogged this before and seen it at least a dozen times, but every time I see âAND THEN LATER, I HAVE A WHOLE CHICKEN FOR ME.â I start ugly laughing and canât stop and frighten the dog.
Remember that these women grew up during the depression. A lot of them probably learned food hoarding tactics because they never knew when their next meal was going to be. So yeah, if you have the chance to shove an entire chicken in your sweater so later, when there is suddenly *no food*? Youâre gonna take it.
Also, Peggy is British. Â Sheâs shocked and a little appalled at these food-stealing women, because Britain had such heavy rationing during the war. Â
British rationing did not end until 1954 (thatâs still 8 years away from the time this scene takes place). Â Rations applied to all food staples, soap, clothing, fuel, and paper. Â In some cases, they became worse or more stringent after the war. Â In 1946, when this story takes place, Britain instituted bread rationing for the first time, food packages weighing more than 5lbs from foreign countries sent to private citizens were subtracted from that citizenâs ration book (so decreasing the amount of food they could buy), and gas was rationed again. Â While America also rationed during the War, the rations were never as severe as the ones in the UK and were lifted immediately after peace was declared.
Peggyâs reaction is âI would never betray my country by stealing food.â
Ride of the Valkyries
This was meant to be for a book that was put together by about a hundred women professionals, all illustrating females in Fantasy. The project got too big and unmanageable, and officially ended this month. The book wonât happen, unfortunately, but fortunately, I can now show this!
Thereâs prints of it too. :) http://www.etsy.com/listing/511390294/ride-of-the-valkyries-facsimile-print
âA book is like a friend. You can never have too many.â
So true!
Iâm gonna name my daughter Theresa but pronounce it like âthereâs aâ.

William had a dream of bringing electricity and running water to his village. And he was not prepared to wait for politicians or aid groups to do it for him. The need for action was even greater in 2002 following one of Malawiâs worst droughts, which killed thousands of people and left his family on the brink of starvation.
Unable to attend school, he kept up his education by using a local library. Fascinated by science, his life changed one day when he picked up a tattered textbook and saw a picture of a windmill. Mr Kamkwamba told the BBC News website: âI was very interested when I saw the windmill could make electricity and pump water.
âI thought: âThat could be a defense against hunger. Maybe I should build one for myselfâ.â When not helping his family farm maize, he plugged away at his prototype, working by the light of a paraffin lamp in the evenings. But his ingenious project met blank looks in his community of about 200 people.
âMany, including my mother, thought I was going crazy,â he recalls. âThey had never seen a windmill before.â [x]
In 2014, William Kamkwamba received his 4 year degree at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire where he was a student.
