âHow else will you learn?â Joker speaks like heâs surprised himself. White-grazed eyelashes bat, training a briny film back. It stings. Bites at the corners and threatens to spill from anxiety alone. Werewolf holds his ground; shoulders slanted away from Bruce should he need to defend himself. His feet spread a little farther apart. Joker smokes more than he remembers to breathe. It blanches his complexion save for the red wreathing his waterlines. Trillions of cat eyes blink and wink from beyond the gothic castle in the skyâs panes. Inclining his chin shades Jokerâs periphery with those emboldening lights. He sets his jaw like itâll still his left hand extending to yank the cigarette back to his side. âThree years ago,â a cloud rushes between them when he laughs, âI couldnât have talked my way out of a jaywalking ticket.â Not that heâs some diabolical mastermind now, butâŚÂ
Bruceâs pretentious bat suit casts a large shadow. Silent steps avoid its reach. He wonât return to the piano â Jokerâs overstayed his ostensible welcome. Surreptitious glances about the penthouse seek out the aging butler or the clack of the codgerâs cane as he walks. Thus far, nothing. Still fails to reassure him. âSometimes,â he makes a face, peeks left and right like heâs sharing a secret, then speaks out one side of his mouth, âYouâve gotta fuck up.â When his eyebrows wag, the painted cartoonish set on his forehead vanish behind its creases. Joker lurches into a sharp, wheezy laugh that doesnât abate even after the cigarette returns to his lips. Ashes nip both his fingers and the back of his hand. âThough I donât know if Iâll get very farâŚâ
The red iPhone that Joker never uses weights his pant leg. He should pluck it loose and show a screenshot from one of the many ârevelationsâ making its rounds pertaining to him. Joker resists in favor of bouncing his leg and filling his chest with smoke. âIâm assuming you saw your old manâs lump sums to the entire Department of Health almost forty years backâŚ?â Joker cringes after he dates himself. âTheyâre gonna be coming for me with staves and pitchforks. Some dead chick is the least of my problems right now.â
âArthur, can you get the lock?â
âSorryâŚâ
âť đđđđđđđ âËâŠ
something shifts in the corner of his eyes. the fucking cat, probably. a smile quakes on the jagged edges of the jokerâs chapped lips that he attempts to lick away; one, twoâ three times, uselessly. the ghost of it tugging at the corners of his mouth into a would-be dogâs jaw, and the grin that the mere sight of jokerâs painted face elicits is one little step from that mauled territory. he gets up, sniffing the cold blue air that blows from the broken window sheet; the armchairâs starting to feel constricting and heâs so excited ! the otherâs comment is rather ungenerous, considering j is back to looking tentatively human again, and it spurs him into bending with howling fits of laughter. startled, the cat runs off.  âthe, uh, the news say three hoursââ that wild laugh soon quietens into a hollow trace of a broad, self-satisfied grin. even with no paint, it looks too wide.  âtime flies when youâre havinâ fun!â  the scars pull, stretching around his taunting words. taunting who? not joker, not yet, though heâs eligible for it .. j decides, as he strolls the living room like a caged dog.Â
he staggers past the threshold, leaving joker to pick up glass shards. in the dark of the apartment his white madman-outfit (kindly provided at arkham asylum, though they really gotta work on their fashion brand, uh!) appears innocuously stained, but as soon as he slides into the kitchen and turns on the light, the nature of those stains is darkly revealed. the rusty brown of dried blood. he pretends he doesnât hear jokerâs light-footed steps following him, and sticks his head under the kitchen faucet, letting cold water soak his dyeless hair. then shakes his head dry.  âhahhh,â  he wheezes. âme? no ⌠no, no. i took a sabbatical. went on, ha, on vacation. room and board sucked shit, though, and ⌠letâs not get started on entertainment, heheohhe. but you ⌠know that, hm? you do.â   arthurâs kitchen is fascinating, apparently. j pulls each drawer, picking forks, picking knives. he slips one into his sleeve, too.  âoh, hey aaah-rt. got any pizza leftovers or shit?â
âDrunken Noodles from last night,â though heâs pitching the broken shards and retrieving a dustpan to scrape any jagged granules off the hardwood, Joker thrusts his left arm towards the fridge. Cigarette smoke leads the way in pallid threads that dissipate right at the handle. Most of the unit is vacant. Theyâre moving. Joker coughs either from the stench radiating from the basin or being so close to the mural of dried blood and poor grime. A tub of bleach sits under the sink. Thatâll soon be tossed in like Holy Water and left to soak. Heâll bleach the handle, too. Anticipating some sharp form of, âI donât care,â Joker preemptively tells J, âThey were mine,â as opposed to Nixâs. âUse one of the forks in your sleeve.â Most of the refrigerator is loaded with her booze. The same catlike footfalls that followed J to the kitchen now tread toward the broken window, only Werewolf never truly turns his back. Eyes that collect every shred of light refract and throw the gleam across the apartment â almost like a warning.Â
Dropping to his haunches, he keeps one eye on J and the other on the tiny shards that either disappear between bristles or sweep from the floorboards into the pan. He doesnât think to wedge the cigarette between his teeth, so it spits from his left hand and leaves tiny crumbles on the floor that brush away. Tuna peeks from behind a couch arm; golden eyes blown eyes and his pupils even wider. Joker scantly mimics the look, then stands and returns to the same garbage bin beneath the sink. The handheld broom disappears underneath as well. Then the filter returns to his mouth. Joker places himself in front of the cabinet door thatâd lead to the shattered glass arsenal. âYou know,â he ducks to inflate his lungs with rat poison once again, ââitâs not gonna be as enthralling as you thinkâŚâ Jokerâs left hand traces the revolver in his pocket â he half-disguises it by clearing his stuffy throat; âThe chase. I shot a journalist in the Square at point-blank range without so much as a slap on the wrist.â The heels of his hands rest on the edge of the countertop, though he remains almost on his tiptoes should the need to wheel around rise. âThe pigs have a new poster boy. Straight from 4chan.â

now itâs his turn to laugh: a singular bark of sound from back in his throat that contains little in the way of humor. â oh, who said anything about logic? â his smile returns, thin and sharp. incongruous in his otherwise soft face. â if logic ruled the hearts and minds of people, then weâd have a bunch of poindexters for our priests and politicians, instead of, say, the dearly departed mayor mitchell. who was no great intellect, i can tell you that. â and ever falconeâs creature. heâs not sorry to see the man into his grave, even if someone else put him there. â besides, once someone begins to murder over what they believe, theyâre a bit beyond convincing otherwise, wouldnât you agree? â
the osprey has departed with its catch, likely to a nest built into the bridge arches above. briefly he follows it in his mindâs eye. oswald shifts his weight, leaning into his cane to take the pressure off his perpetually aching leg. a few yards away near the other side of the overpass, the black body of his town car crouches silently, its unlit headlamps catching faint glimmers of what daylight there is. its driver is a dark silhouette resting against its exterior, little more than a shape cut from shadows.
oswald sighs, the whole topography of his body sinking underneath it. his face tips up toward joker, catching the other manâs eyes, hanging somehow luminous like the lure of an angler fish. for a few seconds, oswald simply studies him, brows pinched and mouth drawn flat, the cigar smoldering in his hand. then: â believe me or donât, but i am not your enemy. if you asked it of me, i would help you. i still owe you, after all. but you must ask. â
âYouâre not really gonna ask him, are you?â Murray guffaws. Joker suffers a pinch where his neck meets his shoulder. His head yanks into it. The same eyes thatâd been refracting any glow they could collect now squeeze shut. Werewolf bares teeth. Uneven red paint hides any pain, stretching almost from ear to ear. Shaking his leg dispels the roil in his throat. The late talk show host further confuses his final guest by splashing as he walks through puddles. Underneath the trestle, his studio audience remains quiet. Waiting for a cue or another zinger aimed at Joker so they can laugh. âSuppose he knows who you are. I meanâŚâ he halts just beyond Jokerâs left shoulder so he can stage whisper at him in that pseudo-paternal tone, ââwho you really are.â
âUnless youâve got a GPS on that ugly son of a bitch,â Joker doesnât need to see Hazmat Zodiacâs face to come to that conjecture, âI donât see how.â He laughs at his own petty swipe. Itâs neither involuntary nor forced; producing a softer, more melodic sound that he leans into. A noxious cloud dissipates between them. Murray is none too pleased. He throws his arms up as if to sigh, âHere we goâŚâ and backs off. Joker flashes his attention left and right to observe the silhouettes seated within the trestleâs cylindrical theater. Hundreds stare, judging, waiting for him to admit the wrong thing and nosedive even swifter into his own demise.Â
Patinas of warmth from the immolated trashcan sweep his way. Joker squares his shoulders into each fleeting breath from behind and rolls them. Another hit fills his chest with fumes of a similar temperature. It hastens his shaking leg.Â
âOn second thoughtâŚâ A slow, twinkly tune best suited for some toy piano involuntarily tugs at his fingertips. The momentum drags Hazmat Zodiacâs first wave of leaked photographs to the forefront of his memory. He stiffens, then swivels his head to keep Murray Franklin out of his periphery. âThe mayorâs sidepiece,â from the collection virtually everyone has seen by now, ââwent missing,â he takes another drag, but forgets to exhale, âSheâs one of mine.â Slavic. Russian. Eastern European. Fill in the blank. âAnd no one from my side of the Iron Curtain knows where she is. He hid her passportâŚin a safeâŚin his home. Why?âÂ
THIS ARC WILL UPDATE & BE REBLOGGED CONSISTENTLY AS EVENTS UNFOLD. THE BELOW EVENTS HAVE ALREADY OCCURRED.
For weeks, eerie viral videos of Jokerâs segment on Live! with Murray Franklin surfaced on the internet and local television & radio programming. Gothamâs chaotic symbol of change was relentlessly labeled a âfraud.â Penny Fleckâs letters to Thomas Wayne would appear and, at times, be read aloud.Â
It was unnerving to many, but those closest to the source were aware of what was being implied about him. These strange subliminal messages inspired some to turn on the clown even though no official claim against him had been made. In response, a number of Jokerâs âclownsâ took to painting their clown masks and faces black and white as opposed to Jokerâs signature colors. Arthur was jarred by these broadcasts to the point that he sent his and Nixâs baby daughters to live with their grandfather, GCPDâs Chief Inspector, in the suburbs. The older daughter has since been attending preschool virtually, citing her immunodeficiency disorder as the reason. She has been receiving treatment from a hospital in the suburbs as opposed to Gotham General. Joker also adopted a second pseudonym. Under that second alias, heâs sublet a duplex on the opposite end of the city with Nix.
Gotham Mayor Mitchell is then brutally murdered in his own home. His thumb is severed. âNO MORE LIESâ is scrawled in blood across his duct taped face. A greeting card is written to the Batman by the killer. On McKean Island the very next night, Dr. Benjamin Stoner, now a retired doctor but a prominent member of Arkham State Hospitalâs Board, is brutally murdered. A syringe filled with rat poison was injected into his eyeballs while his head was trapped in a rat cage. An antiquated clown-themed greeting card written âTO THE NEW KING,â was stuffed in the tubing. At first this confused GCPD, but Chief Inspector Grant Degraves connected the dots. He called his son-in-law, Joker, to the scene.Â
Unbeknownst to GCPD, Bruce had Arthur wear camera contact lenses and was radioing him instructions from the Batcave so every detail could be captured. Degraves handed Joker the ciphered greeting card. It was impossible for Joker, as a dyslexic, to even try and glean. Luckily, the camera lenses captured the killerâs entire message so Bruce and Alfred could print and decrypt the answer to this riddle:
Two coins. One is marked Arthur I. The other is marked Arthur IV. One is genuine, the other is a forgery. Which is the forgery?
The ciphers answered:
Arthur I
A coin would not be marked Arthur I at the time it was produced. There would not have been knowledge that there was going to be an Arthur II. This riddle implied that the documentation in Penny Fleckâs file regarding Arthur Fleck being an abandoned child was forgedâŚand Dr. Stoner had a role in it.Â
While solving the cipher on Batmanâs card, however, Alfred uncovered the hidden message: âDRIVE.âÂ
Beneath Wayne Tower, Bruce and Joker compared the footage captured from Mayor Mitchellâs crime scene to Dr. Benjamin Stonerâs. They concluded that both kills were by the same person and connected, but why? And when will they strike next?
đđđ đđđ
When Joker relayed the riddle in Dr. Stonerâs greeting card to Nix, she snuck into Gothamâs Department of Health headquarters disguised as an employee. She rummaged through their archives for any trace of Arthur Fleck being there as an infant. To no surprise, there was none. It was either completely erased or never actually existed. Nix took that knowledge and headed to Gotham General, where there also was no record of Arthur being born. The only instances of âFleckâ on file were the following: Evelynâs forged birth certificate thanks to Oswald Cobblepot and Lilacâs birth in 2021. Nix connected the dots and realized that there was a coverup.Â
Frustrated, she slipped into Arkham State Hospital as a nurse and rummaged through any and every instance of âWayneâ or âFleckâ in their files. She noticed in 1983, the year that Arthur was born, Thomas Wayne made an incredibly handsome donation to the hospital and the Gotham Department of Health, however, copies of Arthurâs blank adoption papers and the press releases detailing the Wayneâs donations were sent to every media outlet from âWayne Enterprises PR.â Much to Arthur and Nixâs horror, they learned that his adoption papers from Penny Fleckâs file that had been in their possession had been stolen.
At around the same time, Batman and Gordon discovered the âthumbâ drive in Mayor Mitchellâs car. It contained compromising photos of Mitchell and his mistress leaving The Iceberg Lounge with Oswald Cobblepot in the picture. Riddler set up a trap for the photos to automatically send to all media outlets from Gordonâs email as soon as they were opened. News of Jokerâs forged adoption papers timed with Thomas Wayneâs exorbitant charity to the Department of Health around that time caused quite a media stir. Riddlerâs earlier videos defacing Joker and claiming that he is a fraud were opened for discussion on their potential meaning. Pennyâs letters were also on every news outlet and the armchair detectives of the world began putting together the pieces: Arthur Fleck must be Arthur Wayne. A notion that gutted a number of the ten million strong who helped him rise to prominence. There is a division in terms of what is real and what is conspiracy theory.
A failed attempt to gain intel about the mayorâs mistress from Penguin led Batman to Selina Kyle. He learned that she was roommates with the mayorâs missing mistress: Annika Kosolov. The news then played a new Riddler stream. He told the people of Gotham that he killed Mayor Mitchell because he was corrupt and that he will not stop until Gothamâs day of reckoning. He then showed the Commissioner in a rat trap akin to how Dr. Benjamin Stoner was murdered. Photographs of the Commissioner pushing Drops were put on blast. Batman also found Riddlerâs next card, which instructed him to âfind the rat.â When Batman asked Joker if that message meant anything to him, Joker facetiously claimed that heâs the super rat to Batmanâs super cat and Riddler doesnât understand their dynamic.
Once Selina agreed to help Bruce so they could find Annika, Bruce asked Joker â who is not only Russian himself, but bilingual and deeply rooted in Russian community â if he could reach out to his connections to try and locate Annika. After informing Bruce that Annikaâs surname is actually Kosolova and not Kosolov due to Russian naming conventions, Joker once again donned the camera contact lenses and did so. He was not nearly as well-received as he normally wouldâve been given that there is broad speculation that he is indeed a Wayne like the viral Riddler streams are alluding to. This led to Bruce asking Selina to go undercover and wear the lenses into 44 Below, the club within the club at The Iceberg Lounge. There, Selina ran into DA Colson and half of his staff. She pressed a very drunk Colson about the identity of the rat under Batmanâs guidance. Selinaâs mission also went south. Colson was captured by Riddler in the back of his own car.Â
đđ đđ đđđđđđđđđâŚ
â Â Â Â â Â Â Â jokethur.
Though he hangs his head for a smoke-suffused, breathy laugh, the weight of Pennyâs corpse strains his back. Jokerâs winged scapula shoots up. Rolling it in tandem with the opposite shoulder to no detectable rhythm somewhat breaks how his smile falters and nostrils flinch. A chill rockets up his spine. Joker bends with that sensation, too. The balls of his feet rock from left to right, though the anxious bouncing increases frequency. Musicianâs fingers lay on Nixâs exposed knee like the neck of a new guitar and pluck at stray denim strands. She may or may not know Smoke on the Water â easiest, yet most famous chords of all time. Eyes like broken glass remain open as he stares at her leg, as if blinking might rip his eyelids even though tears have blown them pink. A racing heartbeat wonât translate through his cigarette-warmed fingertips. Joker tucks the filter back in his mouth and takes a hit as he bounces to the Deep Purple hit that predates both of them.Â
Wheezing lifts the damp green hair from the back of his neck. Joker braces each time Pennyâs stifled breath ghosts his skin. Caulking only amplifies her rotten stench. Loam and decay and a flat, albeit pungent odor like a bus depot restroom pervades the air. He twitches when flaky, bone-dry lips graze the back of his neck and matted strawberry blonde hair hangs in thick vines over his shoulders. He canât buck her off by shrugging or shifting his weight. Skeletal fingers burrow between his ribs as if she wants to rip his organs out through them. Nix canât see her. The newspapers latticed across each window further hides her amongst shadows that Joker tends to repel. He loops an arm around Nixâs waist and plants a warm kiss near her neckâs crook. That misspelled tattoo leaps whenever she speaks. Werewolf noses the outermost letters, then lays half of his profile on her clavicle. Itâs bony and cold. Joker grips her side and ropes his free arm around her neck so he can take another drag. A few ashes that heâll need to sweep later crumble onto the countertop. The weight increases. Joker holds himself with a slight hunch and lifts his face from her neck to find the three stars below her eye first.Â
Tilting his head somewhat loosens Jokerâs demeanor. His mouth brushes her top lip and adores that plump curve on a loop. âYou canâtâŚâ he speaks in a more nasal pitch than usual; âAre you talking Gotham General or Stonerâs evil lair?â Arkham State Hospital. Before he continues, he breaks for a brief laugh that sends him oscillating back and forth. âI-Iâd really prefer if you didnâtâŚâ The pad of his thumb both guides the cigarette back into his mouth so he can flick stray glitter from her cheek. The granules cling to his skin. ââtry anything in Arkham,â speaking with a cigarette between his lips comes second-nature, though he has difficulty holding eye contact. Jokerâs attention darts about the countertop, then Nixâs jeans, her narrow torso, and finally her face from the chin-up. âI-itâs not like I wouldâve been born there, you knowâŚ?â Just as he finishes the sentence, Joker scrunches his nose and teases, âThough it does feel like it. I donât knowâŚâ Laughing stings the back of his throat. He forgot to exhale whatâd been scorching his nostrils and throat. âEvelyn actually was born there,â he tilts his head like itâll capsize her naturally downturned mouth, ââhave I ever told you that?âÂ
Though his arms are clutched so tightly around her she might bruise, he isnât truly present. He speaks directly to her, but with some degree of distraction, like heâs caught in a dream or nightmare elsewhere. It isnât a new sensation, to just be another mirage heâs desperately holding to, but it pinches something in the loneliest pit of her nonetheless. Nixâs eyes watch his own glaze and wander to some other place. They always house light somehow â even if there isnât any to thieve. And there isnât. He made sure of it.  â I donât know, â  She says, lifting one hand to splay her fingers atop his bicep. Somewhere beneath his skin his blood runs marathons around his body, and his heart likely pounds. Hers is slowed with her way if thinking â how the mire Arthurâs knee-deep in seems to bog the air down to silt. She briefly wonders if the same occurs elsewhere. Could just be her.  â Maybe. â  The notion that perhaps she might not have known strikes her as something cold and empty, the clunk of a hollow bell. Nix swallows bile and then another chug of her beer, knocking it back in her free-hand. She re-phrases for him, shakes her head.  â Probably. â
The walls of Arkham State Hospital, within which her mind already wanders, are whatâs drawn to the forefront. Arthur has her pinned to the counter as if sheâd made to leave him now, though in truth sheâd likely wait for him to disappear again into whatever hovelâs home to Bruce. Her nose wrinkles to give him a flash of teeth, like her beerâs gone sour in all of five minutes. Sheâs already regretting not snagging another before she seated herself here. Whatâs left will have to serve, though Arthur no doubt will strike another light the very second his cigarette dies.  â And Iâm talking everywhere. â  She finally responds, winging them back around to the matter at hand. Against his arm her working fingers curl just enough to apply pressure. Whether itâll root him, or sheâll do anything to salvage what there is of his honest attention, she doesnât know. Finds it unlikely.  â Iâm not doing half a job here. â  Yet his reluctance easily declares that he wishes she would. As of now, sheâs wondering if sheâll come up empty. And that he knows that. Nix ducks her chin so close that it almost pins to her clavicle and their brows almost knock. She pointedly reminds him,  â Iâm trying to get the truth out. The actual truthâŚ
â â save you from all this bullshit. â  She rears back for another swig. Bottleâs feeling lighter by the second and so her chest hitches for her next breath.  â You donât even have to be around if it makes you feel any better. Fuck knows you go anywhere near that place, and youâre back in the hole. â  Arthur hasnât known anonymity since Murray Franklin became intimately acquainted with hot lead. The irony is that she can slip by unnoticed.  â I donât want you near it. â  Her toneâs just as immovable as the aforementioned bullet. And a steely, cool gaze settles on sea greens again. Heâs never far from tears.  â Iâm not some bumbling detective who needs you to go in first. Okay? â  The barbâs quiet on her tongue, spoken with such a nonchalance that it might even be tricky to catch just who sheâs referring to. She may as well be discussing the weather she can no longer see.  â And Iâm not sitting around like a fucking hermit in this cave. â  Her jaws works, one side to the other. The rim of her bottleâs neck taps against a canine while she supposedly ponder her next move.  â If nowhereâs safe anyway, whatâs it matter? Iâm gonna be unsafe somewhere that still has windows. â

Had he not been clambering to breathe, Joker wouldâve thrust a hand out. Clutched the Gearheadâs Frankenstein forearm so tight that itâd breakâŚor temporarily lose circulation. Whatever would keep Bruce in place. Instead Joker clutches a bottle of Poland Spring â
âStraight from the slavic nation of Maine!â Murray Franklin teases the studio audience. One of his pompous laughs cues everyone to join in.Â
Joker rolls his eyes so far back, he can see his scrambled brain. Plastic crunches in his left hand, which continues to shake. The cap is precariously close to flying across the defunct Wayne Terminal like a champagne cork. A round of applause lures Jokerâs eye to NCB Studiosâ theater. Hundreds of silhouettes clap and cheer as their host â with two bullets in his bleeding body â holds his arms out and winks at Joker, âThat one was for you, kid.â Joker certainly hopes not. It was terrible.
Instead of dignifying Murray with a response, Werewolf sneers and finishes hacking. Heâs batted his eyelashes so many times, the white base of his foundation has completely vanished and one of the blue half-triangles has seeped into his mouth. At some point he attempted to take a sip. He used his palm to twist the cap off since the cigaretteâs wedged between his fore and middle fingers. Joker takes a hit from that, too. It makes him cough. Smokerâs lungs push phlegm and a wad of inert ash into his throat. Joker coughs that up, too, but doesnât try to drink again even though the strain has forced tears from his eyes and he continues gagging. That rigor mortis, wind tunnel of a laugh has finally subsided. Werewolf remains rigid; hunched and keeping his torso concealed as if Bruce or the shadows he exudes could disembowel him.Â
Heâd temporarily forgotten about the cameras currently stuck to his eyes. The earpiece rests somewhere by the keyboard. If only theyâd conceal his trembling hands, how his Adamâs apple jumps as he forces out any lingering wheezy mirth, or how his chin inclines as if itâll keep his burning eyes dry. He looks stung. Rabid. Disoriented and utterly glazed over. Thereâs camera contact lenses in his eyes. Joker can no longer feel them or maybe heâs flooded them out. One silent step carries the alpha clockwise, shoulders on an angle and long green hair spilling from behind his ears and over his shoulders. Murray waits for his cue even though a stupid card sits in his folded hands.Â
That slim margin Bruce had placed between them may as well be a ravine. Joker keeps to his side of the gorge, ignoring even the faintest penumbra. Those that do attempt to caress him fail. Joker seems to physically repel darkness. He sniffs back a chunk of whatâs probably Murrayâs rotten flesh, turns it over on his tongue, then swallows something coppery. The bottle and cigarette remain in his unquiet hands. Then he shows teeth. Jokerâs second, painted smile doesnât help it appear any less caustic. Like heâs taken a scorpion sting to the chest.Â
âIf those were glass,â leaves him with a rush of smoke. Werewolf keeps both smiles on display and broad. âThese are barbed flypaper.â What scant illume the terminal can harbor seeps into his eyes. They reflect the glow akin to a nocturnal animalâs. Makes his smile even less genuine. âBut,â he salts the air with that for a moment, jaw slackened and his tongue guiding the filter from one corner of his mouth to the other, ââthey do work...right? My corneas havenât been suffering in vain...?â

His creation is sat unceremoniously beneath the bright LED light fixtures in their ceiling. Those are about the only thing left of Nixâs design features here â Evelynâs room remains a shut sanctuary, Arthur need not have bothered blotting the windows in there. White halos above their heads do nothing to replace the wanting daylight. Faded papers housing headlines like âBATMAN: GOTHAMâS FRIEND OR FOE?' and 'GHOULISH GANGS ON THE RISE' â someone somewhere is probably proud of that last one â blot the city out. Nix hates every inked letter, however even now as she faces what once was the view to their modest garden. The bug hotel in the far corner sheâd once built with Evelyn will remain when they finally do vacate the empty shell theyâre currently camped in. Arthurâs idea of dodging attention at the duplex has, so far, served to he a smart one, though leaves them nonetheless lacking. In all things.
Nixâs working fingers have pressed that garish yellow dough until her prints mar its soft surface. The two digits she knows this exercise is supposedly for, remain unfurled. They twitch about a centimetre before giving up the ghost. Her brain canât send the rest of the message, it bounces right back. She hasnât the heart to tell him that this is all a little too late, months even, and so sits between his legs on the floor like its some ramshackle picnic they have to oven-bake before enjoying. His heart skips against her shoulder, even through her t-shirt it taps its beat. Thereâs music in him. In comparison, Nix is as flat as a body on the floor. She wrinkles her nose and tosses the lopsided yellow ball from one palm to the other.
â Maybe, â  She says, speaking over her shoulder while her eyes watch her own work. â You shouldnât rush perfection. â  Itâs a ridiculous sight that none, she thinks, would ever put money on occurring. Nix rocks back until her shoulders square against his chest and she lifts to present her 'grated cheeseâ.  â See, now this is professional fucking work. â  The gesticulation with her free hand, finger and thumb pressed together, is hardly required.  â Yours is gonna be all under-cooked, under-seasoned and shit. Losing patrons by the table-load. â  There are none in the hollow apartment, but she dives deep into the scene he builds. Finally she pins her chin to her shoulder so she can look him in the eye. Kiss-fluffed lips press for a smile too sweet.  â Iâll run you out of business by spring. â  The joke being; Gothamâs seemingly perpetual winter.
She thinks hers is pepperoni, or something equally likely to be covered in uneven red splotches. Theyâre meant to he round, but her shaping skills leave a little to be desired. Nix huffs a quiet laugh which heâll catch against his skin since theyâre so close theyâre lashes could knot. When she does glance down to her blindly completed monstrosity, sheâs still smiling faintly, teasing.  â We really need to get the girls back for you. â
Eyes like October moons almost blow wide enough to swallow hers. The recessed lights never fail to flatter Nix, but without the aid of heavy stage makeup Jokerâs every crease is exaggerated. Shadows try to runnel between the grooves in his forehead and cheeks. Time hasnât been kind. Flattering ring fixtures cannot save him. He ignores how hideous he must look â all that darkness can physically touch is the gap where his first molar on the right should be. Joker flashes those crooked rows to bolster his âappall.â âO-oh, you mean,â the cigaretteâs yanked from his mouth so he can gesture with smoke threads flying all around them, ââso one can eat the Play Doh and the other will feed it to the cats while you,â Jokerâs head lolls as he over-enunciates, âDear,â heâs forgotten to exhale, ââsteal my customers.âÂ
Werewolf flicks his tongue over his teeth, scrunches his face, and brings the cigarette back to his mouth. Mid-puff, he says, âI donât think so,â while shaking his head. The weight of his bicep nudges Nixâs shoulders from behind. âNo one likes plain pizza. Unless youâre running one of those dollar slice joints in Manhattan. Now theyâŚâ again his cigarette bats for punctuation. ââhave a god-level scam operation. I actually respect it.â
Jokerâs left ring finger taps her lock screen to check on Andrew. Their Dasher appears to have been driving to them for some time, but isnât taking Nixâs usual route home from Mercato. He squints. Touches Nixâs temple with his mouth and grazes her pallid skin as he waits for the little car icon to move again. âThis thing,â the app, ââis addictive.â She may not be able to glean him smiling against her skin as the little orange car crawls toward their brownstone. Two fingers fan and zoom in to try and catch cross-streets. Nix always keeps her phone in dark mode to help him read better. âHow do you not just stare at it the entire time?â his tone equates to that of someone who watches the microwave countdown directly in front of it. Her skin could freeze water, yet Joker enfolds tighter around her and lets the cigarette hang from his mouth. âI canât stop looking. What if Andrew needs better directions?âÂ
This distractionâs losing Joker customers to the enemy...
His hand shooting out might be involuntary, but his attention finally returns to the little plastic brick oven. Its vacancy is fleeting. Nix canât really fit more pepperonis on her pie. Joker made another mushroom pie, though this one has little olives on it, tooâŚand pepperoni. Little green peppers have been slashed up and sprinkled across the crust as well. Cigarette-warmed lips hover over and stamp kisses at the juncture where her neck meets her shoulderâŚand he slides his Play Doh pizza in the oven. Nix is left with most of a pepperoni pie and a hungry Peppa Pig duet. Before she thinks to look, he subs his cigarette on the floor and re-hooks his arm across her body from behind. Fingers best suited around the neck of a guitar or violin curl under and along her breastâs outer margin. Itâs only a brush, though his thumb flicks her nipple through her top. Watermelon body mist and a far thicker, sweeter aroma incense him. Another wrist-flick hastens his grasp. Each finger bends and latches onto her outermost curve. Jokerâs tongue follows the bend past her parted lips and between those stupid silver fangs.Â
