     “Doubtful. You’re not as trigger happy as you believe yourself to be.”

“Some days I wish I was. What can I help you with? Your brother isn’t here.”

And now here it was. John was paying for his inaction, for not reacting to his gut sooner and, almost immediately, he went to his desk and searched a few files sitting there. He soon came out with the address and he wrote it on a Post -It note before he handed it to the other. “Here you are. We should get going.” John said, then looked at her squarely. “:I am coming. No objections, I hope?”

     “Ah, yeah.” His lips pressed together, unsure of how to go about it. He didn’t exactly think it through before just showing up. “We haven’t talked in a long time. A few years after uni. I’m back in London now. Just sort of wanted to…see him.” Without actually seeing him, apparently. 

John did find it a bit odd that Victor would just show up without really any notice. But then again, he supposed that’s how things used to work between Sherlock and VIctor. Wouldn’t be a shock. “Yeah, uh, Sorry, he’s not here.” John said, waving a hand. “He’s on a case and he gets....wrapped up in it pretty easily.”

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think so. Depends on the circumstance, to be honest. Why do you ask?”

“Which is just a reminder that the world is not black and white. There is no strict right or wrong side to anything. Everything would be easier if that was true, though. Sometimes the grey areas of life are the most confusing.”

“If everything were just black and white, the world would be ‘too boring’, to quote your brother. Easier, yes, but too boring. Humans can’t really see one side of a situation either. Depends on the person. Someone sees one way, the other sees another way.”

“I think that means he likes it. Gladstone it is then. Such a fitting name for such a handsome dog. And this means we can keep him, right? Do you think Sherlock would enjoy some time with him?”

“For a little while, we can keep him to see how things work out. But I didn’t think that Sherlock liked dogs. He’s rejected the idea of me having a dog in the flat in the first place. I thought he hated them.”

At the mention of the shoulder, John let out a sigh of relief. That he had seen and had commented on it, since it wasn’t fresh and certainly wasn’t there when he checked him out the first time. “He did have one, yeah.” John said. “I needed to-to do a physical on him for his wrist. Just in case it had spread or something.” John sighed. “Bloody hell, I knew something was wrong.”

This was a game. That’s what this was, what this had to be. Jim -a man who was supposed to be dead, mind you- was playing games with him. Just like Moriarty. “You must have the term ‘Friend’ confused with ‘Enemy’. I’ll ask you again, Moriarty: What. are you. doing in my flat?” He was certainly not in the mood for games.

“John, this is exciting. This is a big step.” She said, unfurling from his side and standing on her hands and knees in front of him on the bed. She grinned and gave him a kiss, her cheeks flushed a little.

In response to her excitement, John pushed away the nervousness and gave her a grin before he kissed her in return. “It is a big step. A...very big one.” He said and sighed before smiling at her. “But I think we’re ready for it, personally.”
