you didnβt even remember what the fight started about. something small that turned big, something you both had been holding in for way too long.
βi ainβt sayinβ it again,β joel snapped, pacing the kitchen with that tight, frustrated energy. βyou canβt keep runninβ off without tellinβ nobody. i was worried sick.β
βi told you, iβm fine,β you shot back, arms crossed. βyou act like iβm a child.β
he groaned, rubbing his face.
βiβm actinβ like someone who gives a damn. donβt twist it.β
βthen stop yelling at me!β you argued, voice cracking.
joel stopped pacing. he looked at youβreally lookedβand something in him twisted. he didnβt know how to handle the fear of losing someone again. didnβt know how to say it without coming off rough.
instead of talking, he let the frustration win.
his hand came down hard on the edge of the counter.
a loud bang
the glass pitcher beside him tipped
it hit the floor
shattered everywhere
and the soundβ
god, the soundβ
hit you like a punch.
your whole body reacted before your mind did.
you flinched so violently your knees almost buckled. your hands flew up over your head, shoulders curling in as you backed into the wall, breath catching in your chest like you were bracing forβ
for something that wasnβt coming.
joel froze.
the anger drained from his face instantly, replaced with horror.
βheyβ hey. sweetheart. no.β
his voice dropped so fast it almost broke.
you were shaking, head ducked, arms up to protect yourself even though he wasnβt anywhere near you.
joel took a step toward youβ
then stopped himself, hands raised like he was approaching a scared animal.
βhoney, look at me,β he whispered. βplease.β
you didnβt. couldnβt. your breath was coming too fast, too shallow.
βbabyβ¦ i didnβt hit you,β he said softly, voice cracking. βi hit the counter. not you. never you.β
slowly, you peeked up.
joel looked destroyed.
he knelt down in front of you slowly, gentler than youβd ever seen him move.
βsweetheart, i ainβt ever gonna lay a hand on you like that. i swear on my life.β
your hands were still trembling by your head.
he reached toward you, but so slow, so carefully.
βcan i touch you?β he asked, barely audible.
you gave a tiny nod.
he exhaled shakily and softly guided your hands down, brushing your hair back, checking your expression like you were made of glass.
βgod,β he breathed, eyes glassy. βiβm so sorry. i didnβt thinkβ¦ i didnβt know the noise would scare you like that.β
you swallowed hard.
βi justβ it was loud. and i thoughtββ
βi know,β he murmured, already pulling you gently into his arms. βcome here.β
and the moment you felt his chest, everything in you gave out. you clung to him, face pressed into his shirt as he wrapped his arms around you tight, one hand cradling the back of your head.
βyouβre safe,β he whispered into your hair. βiβm not mad anymore. i ainβt ever gonna hurt you. not physically, not ever.β
your voice was small.
βi didnβt mean to make you madβ¦β
he shook his head against you.
βyou didnβt. i got mad βcause iβm an idiot who cares too damn much, not βcause of anything you did.β
he pulled back just enough to see your face, thumb wiping a tear from your cheek.
βnext time we argue?β he said gently.
βwe talk. no yelling. no slamminβ things. i wonβt scare you like that again. i promise.β
you nodded, still clinging to his shirt.
joel softened, brushing his forehead against yours.
βthereβs my girl,β he whispered. βiβm right here. i ainβt goinβ anywhere.β
and he didnβt let go of you for the rest of the night.
