Headcanon:

By the time they reach their 20s, Rin is completely over her feelings for Kakashi. Kakashi on the other hand is too late with realizing his own feelings which leads to a chasing game. Rin only tolerates Kakashi for their missions where they each end up tricking poor victims with their fake interest and flirting.

Kakashi ravishes in the attacks when one of the victims gets too close with Rin. Touch my girlfriend and you die. Get to close to my not boyfriend and you lose a finger or two.

All in all, it’s just toxic and Obito is so over their shit when they deny being a couple for the 100th time. Obito is stuck with telling new akatsuki members that no Kakashi doesn’t hate them. He just hates people who get too close to Rin.
