Jess rolled their eyes, a small laugh escaping their lips.

“And what are you gonna do if I do?”

They were having fun.

Jess rolled their eyes, exasperated. 

“Ah yes, I forgot food is more important. My mistake.”

Despite their sarcasm, Jess was actually kind of hungry too. They started for the cafeteria, expecting Robin to follow.

“Like this.”

They raised their hands to their mouth, opening it and letting out a loud buzzing sound for a moment before going silent and listening.

“There’s a few hives in this section of the woods, you coming?”

Jess watched in fascination.

“Yeah, sure, I’ll come.”

They frowned, though they were grateful that the hose was back under control.

“That’s awful - we had a few fires growing up, but we couldn’t put them out on our own. And they always looked so big as if engulfing us would take just a split second.”

She nodded.

“Yeah, it did. I’m glad you didn’t have to figure it out.”

They nodded, humming to themselves.

“Wasps right now actually - I’m a Bee, so it makes it easier.”

Watching someone else try, would at the very least be amusing and also horrifying.

Jess wasn’t really sure what they meant, but nodded anyway.

“Oh, okay. How do you do it?”

they grinned, still struggling with the hose until the force of it knock them off their feet.

“oof - i would definitely appreciate the help.”

Jess nodded and went behind them to grab the hose and held it as steady as she could..

“My dad used to accidentally set the house on fire a lot, and if my brother and I didn’t put it out it would just keep burning.”

Honey tilted their head, half-listening to Jess and half-listening to the distant buzzing.

“Nothing will mean anything in the end, it never does. Things always stay the same - want to walk with me? I’m supposed to gather the bees, it’d be nice to not be alone.”

Jess nodded.

“You’re probably right.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You gather bees?”

tommelise was frankly terrified of the fires that were rapidly spreading across the city, having seen how quickly such fires could destroy lives. and so they had taken to trying to put them out but the hose was hard to control and it was quickly becoming a foamy mess. “look out!” they called out to someone approaching.

Jess maneuvered to avoid the hose, then hurried over.

“Do you need help? That thing looks hard to control.”

“Assemble the wasps they say - as though that will be simple and without a cost,” they muttered, angrily kicking at a stray rock. Satisfaction slightly swelled in their chest as it smashed into a nearby blackjacket nest and they whispered to the now angry insects. “Attack and I will build you a home twice as nice,” the offer said with a finger pointing in the direction of a group of angry rioters. “Are you alright?” they asked, turning to a nearby bystander.

Jess, who had gotten knocked over and was busy brushing herself off nodded.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Afraid of what this means, but fine.”

The excitement in their eyes looked like a weapon to Atropa and her mind racd with ways to use it.

“Yeah - don’t have any helmets though. C’mon!”

Jess followed, laughing.

“Somehow, that doesn't surprise me at all.”

“Oh, okay - that’s good at least. Sorry for freaking out a bit there, I’m a tad panicky.”

They nodded, making no move to make Jess move.

“No problem, it’s what people do here or whatever, right? Like trust falls and stuff?”

“I guess so!”

She laughed.

“I’m actually kind of glad you did. It was sweet of you.”

“Now, if that isn’t what the kids call a ‘big mood’. You know,the day I learn what’s going on is the day I single handely fight the entire Auradlon school and win. You get me?”

Jess laughed.

“Oh, I feel that. Place is wild.”

“ well it’s nice to meet you jess and yes, i’ve had the pleasure of meeting both of them. “ he laughed along with her before waving a hand at her. “ oh don’t apologize for them, it’s fine. “

She raised an eyebrow.

“Really? I don’t get that much.”

She sat down on the ground, and gestured for Ben to sit on the park bench across from her.

To say that Atropa was unimpressed would have been a slight understatement, but they didn’t argue.

“Fine, but we’re taking my bike - or rather, the motorcycle that I stole.”

Jess’s eyes lit up.

“Motorcycle? You have one? Like, a real one?”
