I’ve made a bunch of Shadow of the Fox appreciation posts, but I haven’t really spoken about Okame yet so can we just talk about what a nice dude Hino Okame is?
I mean it. He’s bitter and snarky, but he’s also a genuinely nice guy—after all, who else would drop their old companions and risk their life protecting a person just because the person in question showed them some basic kindness? And then go on to tag along with the person on a potentially life-threatening mission with a demon-possessed shinobi who would’ve already cut you down if his companion wasn’t around to stop him?
And that’s not even the only thing he does for virtual strangers. Remember Roshi, the unfortunate cart driver who became collateral damage to a Kage shinobi attack? Not only did Okame rope him into helping the squad in the first place (seriously, this guy has super befriending skills or something), he also insisted on giving him a grave later on and then finding his family to notify them of what happened to him. You could obviously argue that it’s his own survivor guilt speaking and he wants to make amends, but the fact remains that he cared that much for a guy he met hours ago. And hell, even Daisuke—he didn’t even like the guy, noble and all, but guess who put aside his own resentment and prejudice to lift him up (physically and emotionally) when he was wounded and frustrated after the battle of Satomi’s castle?
But the best thing? The thing that inspired me to write this post? Okame is even nice to Tatsumi. Tatsumi, who could not only very much kill him, but also very much wants to. And Hino Okame sees all that and offers him sake anyway. Does he also mess with him very badly? Sure, but he was absolutely down to befriend the scary demon sword guy, if said demon sword guy had been willing. And remember when Tatsumi mentions Yumeko’s tea ceremony prank on Iesada and his narration adds that Okame told him the story? This is Tatsumi as his scariest—half-demon Tatsumi, and Hino Okame, friend that he is, saw that guy with his glowy tattoos and horns and went, you know what, I have to tell him all about his girlfriend’s shenanigans.
Like? Hello? Everyone except Yumeko was afraid of Tatsumi at that point, including Tatsumi himself, and Okame evidently sought him out and was like, “You wanna know what cool thing Yumeko-chan did when we were in your hometown?” Any reasonable person would’ve stayed away, but Okame probably thought, hey, he could’ve killed me then, he could kill me now, no difference, Mr. No Sense of Humor has to hear this funny story.
My point is…Hino Okame is a really nice dude who can befriend anyone and will do so unless you physically stop him, and he really deserves more credit for that.
Shadow of the fox thoughts
Welp not even three full pages in and here we're hit with the 'omg he's so beautiful' character😂
Oh my god it keeps going he's so dreamy
This is so fast. I don't buy it🤨 Cant wait for this guy to turn out to be horrible.
Also I love Kagawa's writing man. The world, and the way the characters move is just amazing. It always has such a vibe, you know?

Your tag about Ethan seeing Puck for who he really is made me think of some situations lol. Just tiny Ethan keeps calling Puck out for being weird looking and just that he's like [insert fey character from whatever he watches here] . And Puck is just hahah yeah kids right so weird (stfu you stupid child) anyway-
A short list of things Ethan has said to/about Meghan's best friend Robbie Goodfell and the conversations he had to have as a result.
Obligatory "Robbie's a faery" that got him a sit down talk where Luke tried to tell him that's a mean thing to say about someone because people will think they're gay, but also there's nothing wrong with being gay, but also it's still a rude word to call a young man so Ethan shouldn't say it. Insistence that no, Robbie really IS a faery, did not help Ethan's case.
"Why does Robbie look weird" (see: pointy ears and literal glowing green eyes, also sometimes has that mirage of a bird that Meghan saw that one time): This is how Ethan learned A- don't call people weird-looking, especially not to their face, and B- what rufous albinism is.
"What's wrong with your teeth?": He was referring to the canines, but got a loud ETHAN CHASE DON'T SAY THAT from both of his (poor, rural, know what lack of dental care is) parents.
"Do you know Tinker Bell?": Heavy, world weary sigh from Luke because apparently this Meghan's friend is a faery thing isn't going anywhere. Heavier sigh from Puck because not all faeries are piskies and it's so much more complicated but also. Also. Yes they know Tinkerbell.
virus you cant say that

Suddenly remembered that Machina talks about turning Ethan into his half human half machine plaything if Meghan refuses.
I think he and Virus got along great.
I headcanon that Ash used glamour at the end of the iron king to hide his still healing wounds. Because boy did not go from the verge of death to perfectly fine.
But imagine he keeps that up the entire time. Nobody can see how badly injured he was. It's a weakness, after all.
Until Virus puts the bug in him and he's iron poisoned again. So when the gang sees him again, it's so much worse.
Meghan realizing he's been hiding his scars this entire time. Puck realizing what exactly Ash has been through to keep Meghan alive.
Puck seeing that would be awful because Meghan understands it’s bad, but has the benefit of not truly being able to tell the age of scars. Sure, Ash’s face is fucked up, the right side of his lips are turned into a permanent grimace and his hands and wrists are going to take some time to move right again, but that could reasonably be from Virus, right? He wasn’t looking like this under his glamor the WHOLE time, surely.
But Puck knows scars, knows Iron damage; they’ve been in the mortal world for sixteen years, riding in cars and handling the Chase family’s cookware, they know exactly how fast a fey can heal. They can see that sure, Virus caused the open wounds, but everything else is older than it should be.
And even Mab’s best healers couldn’t fix it for him.
Imagine if the pack rats didn't find Ash's sword, so it's just been lost somewhere in the iron realm. When Meghan is queen, she has people look for it manages to find it.
Maybe she plans to send it to Ash, but he's kinda AWOL. So she keeps it.
Imagine Virus gets his sword. He loses it through book 1 and the beginning of book 2, and have to accept this sword he likely forged himself and is immensely powerful to him won’t be recovered.
And then Meghan and Puck see it when he’s at Virus’ whims.
No but it would be so much more interesting if Rowan wasnt an idiot. The whole idea of slapping some iron on him and then that would hopefully work is just. Yeah. Horrifying but. Yeah.
But! Imagine if there was more to it.
What if Rowan had been introduced to Virus and that's why he switched loyalty. Because he thinks that Virus might be able to figure out how to get Old Bloods immune to iron. Plus thinking loyalty to the Iron King will help, because rulers are powerful.
But when Virus dies, that's when it gets interesting. Does he still think it's possible? Or does he reconsider now? What does he do when he burned his old bridges and the new ones are dead? Or does he go with sunken cost fallacy and goes mad in the process?
Big supporter of that plot point becoming so much more complex if Rowan and Virus were closer in kahoots.
And then we can get into, is Virus stringing Rowan along with fake theories that she knows he can't keep up with because he's not a scientist, or does she ALSO think she can get Old Bloods immune to iron? What if they were both nominally working for Ferrum in book 2 while trying to timecrunch their testing, and that's why they needed to steal the scepter.
If they were closer, what does Rowan think of Virus using Ash as a lab subject? What does Virus think of Rowan allowing her to hurt his family?
And when she dies, and her research is lost, and there's no way for him to go back home, what left is there to do but keep pushing forward?
Ohhhh maybe he wasn't planning on betraying winter as much as he did, just you know. Go to war with them. Or just wanting iron immunity, and planning on betraying Iron the second he has it.
But then Virus says she needs more 'Old Blood power' to make this work. So she needs the scepter. Which leads to Sage's death.
And Rowan just going further and further into 'there's no way back'.
That would actually make him so much smarter. Like not even planning on betraying Winter, just temporarily to get what he wants. But it all went wrong and Sage died and Ash stabbed him and now there's no way back.
This would be such an interesting timeline, and I think it could easily make sense. Because the first big moves the Iron Realm made against the courts weren't actually against the courts— they were against the Seelie.
So Rowan, probably a few years ago (but not too long ago because Machina was on the throne), made some sort of contact with the Iron Realm, and sure, Machina is a massive imperialist and eugenicist, but Virus is talking about how evolution doesn't have to leave behind the Oldbloods entirely, she's working on synthesizing Iron Glamor with older forms of glamor, which Rowan looks at and sees A) So much Power, and B) Cool so hopefully the Iron Realm won't be actively eating the rest of the nevernever and turning into acid rain badlands.
She just needs to do some test runs! And Machina thinks the best place to start is with a half-fey, since they can withstand Iron, and it needs to be a really strong half-fey to withstand the Iron Realm, and—
So Rowan gets signed onto helping kidnap Meghan. Which, kidnapping a half-fey is small potatoes, plus will throw a wrench in the Summer Court, so it's all good.
Then a chimera attacks the summer court. "Hey Virus, the courts are at each other's throats now. Is this your fault?" Rowan asks. "Yes, but consider: it lived with iron inside its brainstem for a good few hours. I call this a successful proof of concept!" Virus says. And she has a point, she's making progress, Rowan just has to stick it out with this crazy mad scientist and her regime long enough to get a decent protection from Iron Glamor and then he'll be one of the most powerful Oldblood fey, and—
Ash and Meghan go into the Iron Realm and Machina's regime implodes on itself.
Okay. This is unideal. And while the Iron Court is fractured, they still have the advantage in that the Oldblood fey physically cannot go onto their land, and if this new regime make themselves known they could easily expose him for working with them. But he can keep riding along, because Virus is so close to results she just needs a lot more glamor to be working with since this new king doesn't trust her. She doesn't even need living specimens, she just needs an artifact, and if the courts are at each other's throats, well— Mab won't notice if her middle child is experimenting with iron, will she? It'll be quick, in and out, and if Virus finds a solution not only will she be powerful enough to cement her rule in the Iron Realm, but she'll be indebted to Rowan, who made it happen.
And then Sage dies. And Ash finds out Rowan's involvement. And Ash is kidnapped, turned into a puppet— but it's working, he's still alive, this means we're right, Virus says, and he needs to believe her because he needs this to work, because neither of them have any allies but each other anymore.
And then Virus dies. The Iron Realm is known by both courts, and Rowan is a traitor.
He could ally with Glitch, but Rowan might not even know he's alive until he's already thrown his chips in with Ferrum, and Glitch's survival strategy relies on being hidden— Rowan couldn't get to him if he tried.
The only way out is through.

Puck having lasting effects from being shot 🤝 Ash having lasting effects from the iron kingdom and Virus
They both are so painfully aware of each other's pain and yet that still doesn't stop Ash from trying to kill Puck. They are each others support system but Puck can never fully trust that.
And both are horrible at asking for or accepting comfort. But now they also don't have the other to push or just go into 'no bullshit, let me help you' mode😭
Ash can't help Puck because of the oath (not any more than saving his life in a rush like in iron king, anyway) and Puck can't accept it even if he did, because he needs to be on guard all the time.
Plus Puck can't help Ash either because he'd never accept it. He can only do it when Ash is as badly injured as in the iron daughter, which would be terrifying.
I headcanon the winter princes being centuries apart in ages, because that just makes sense to me. Also some things Ash says back it up.
But it also would be really funny if Mab just had baby fever for a while and had three kids in the span of like. 5 years.
So instead of the ages being like 549, 320, 182
It's just 301, 302, 299 lol
Well, well, well. If it isn't the consequences of someone else's actions that I am directly impacted and severely affected by
I just think Ash should have lasting effects from the bug. Especially chronic pain.
But being in Tir Na Nog is enough to keep it away fully, because the land is constantly healing it's prince. But Ash can't go there anymore.
Being in the NeverNever itself helps and makes it barely noticeable. But then they get banished, and that's when Ash realizes it's not going away in the human world.
It gets better when they return, but in the iron kingdom, it gets worse again. When they go to Arcadia in summer's crossing, it also gets bad.
I just think there could be so much angst and whump
You know how there are a few scenes where Ash is upset so the temperature drops/things get frosted over?
Do we ever see a scene like that with Puck? When Oberon shows up in the woods in Summer's crossing, the world really reacts to him.
But I was wondering if there is a scene where Puck's mood affects the world around him in such a way? I don't remember any.
I can't think of a scene like that, but I think that makes sense considering that Puck while they're a powerful fey, they're not royalty, and the world is explicitly stated to bend to royal lineages in a way that it doesn't for others. That, and since Puck isn't seelie, we don't really know what that would look like.
That being said, I like to think that when Meghan as iron queen loses her temper, the entire room starts smelling and tasting like ozone, even if she doesn't mean for it to.

I think the real theme of Julie Kagawa’s career is that evil women in business suits are sexy.
Was just diagnosed with “need to bite you” disorder. Yeah sorry it’s terminal. The only cure is biting you. C’mere.
