I always thought it interesting that in the second movie, Jafar has that line "If it weren't for me you'd still be in a cage at the bazar, squawking POLLY WANT A CRACKER!"

Seems he used to be a normal parrot and was given human-intelligence (or greater, lol...he would probably say greater, let's be real) but as far as I know it's never talked about outside that one line?

(I watched the series as a kid but I don't remember if they ever went back to that plot beat)

Now it has been a few years since I’ve watched the whole tv series, so if there was more backstory/lore to Iago that I missed from certain episodes I apologize in advance.

But what I do know is that Iago was Jafar’s familiar, and from the in story detail, Jafar channeled all his rage into the bird, which of course giving his size, Iago can’t really contain it all since he always got something to say.

I like to think Jafar most likely did some magical experiments on him that gave Iago the ability to speak and a higher level of intelligence after buying him.
