huntress wizard’s whole connection to finn is built around a fear that attachment will make her “soft” and unable to survive. even in adulthood, the relationship is still written through distance. in fionna and cake her inner life is explicitly tied to the childhood house fire that killed her adoptive parents, and her panic over losing finn reads as that old catastrophic loss getting reactivated rather than as someone peacefully moving toward domestic normalcy.

and finn as an adult is not exactly written as a man arriving at stable pastoral fatherhood either. he is still restless, still oriented toward danger, still trying to care for people by throwing himself into quests and near death situations. when their dynamic shows up on screen, the emphasis is on her dragging him back from the edge, him waking in her care and calling her babe, and other people awkwardly asking if they are “back on again,” not on any build toward a nursery or a family-unit endgame.

so for me fankids flatten what is actually interesting about them. fintress works because it is oblique and hard won. they love each other in a way that still feels strange to them, and the shows preserve that strangeness. making them neatly married with babies feels less like a natural extension of canon and more like fandom importing a very ordinary idea of romantic success onto two characters who are defined, over and over, by their difficulty fitting ordinary scripts.
