Today, I have come to a Realization. The reason that I feel so unprepared for the workforce (I graduate NEXT YEAR) is because I remember Jack Shit from my classes. Iām pretty sure I have a more solid foundation thanks to them, but to actually replicate the things I could do by the end of the course? Iād be hard pressed.
Not to mention, I dropped the ball on internships last year. My bad. Had a resume ready, and then just Didnāt Apply because cover letters suck.
The reason this is coming up is because Iām working on a project that uses SQLite. I used it for my final project Spring ā25, and then Fall ā25 I took a class on databases. Between then and now, I have completely forgotten how to query things. š
I donāt think it helps that my education also feels prettyā¦fragmented? Iāve worked with Python, c++, c, Java, Typescript, Scala, MySQL, PostgresSQL, noSQL (in various formats), Iāve dabbled in backend, dabbled in front end design, dabbled in all kinds of math denominations, but I donāt think I can actually DO anything of merit with any of that. Donāt get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE that Iāve tried so many things. But like.
Software dev has always felt like the default field for a computer science student, and itās only LAST SEMESTER that I actually properly learned Typescript. How?? I wouldāve really preferred to just take like software dev 1, 2, 3, and 4, just two whole years specific to creating software.
Which! Since Iām ranting about it: I fucking hate societyās current options for front end. Itās Java/Typescript. Thatās all. Java is a fuckin NIGHTMARE for front end; the package I know of for Python is fine, but itās memory intensive and ugly as SIN; and the C languages were found dead at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Typescript is the only language Iāve found that has a robust yet manageable front end system, but itās counterbalanced by the fact that it has to be run inside a browser. Thatās stupid. I donāt want my calendar/reminders/kanban app to have to be run through my fucking BROWSER.
And I know for a FACT that I should be able to blend languages together to make a single program. But I have no fucking idea how. And thatās embarrassing as a rising senior in college. (Plus, Iām actually not sure if that would fix the I-hate-needing-to-use-a-browser-for-typescript-programs issue)
Anyway. I think Iām gonna pivot out of software dev. Like Iām still gonna do my senior project for it, but I think Iām gonna apply for IT jobs. That field pays less, but. I didnāt get a fuckin internship this summer, so my chances of success in the software dev field are Small. Fuck me.
Oh yeah. On the bright side though: sometimes ADHD is a blast. Iām having a lot of fun on my current project! (Ignoring the three big things and various small things I need to get done if I want any hope of a future)
