Studio Project: Artist Response Artwork
My artist for this semester was Jessica Stockholder, a well-known sure-specific installation and sculpture artist. As I have studied her work, it is clear to see that she excels in several artistic areas. I wanted to take a combination of all her work, and highlight key characteristics of hers in my own work. I have never made a scultpure/installation before so I took the liberty of not only making one, but to also observe the experience of the space itself before and after. The installation is definitely site-specific. I wanted to converse with her work through my own by asking myself what it is like to use pretty random, household, everyday objects in a physical artwork. Using plastic was another interesting feat in efforts to understand how she sees plastic in her installations and sculptures. To bring attention to these lifeless objects and their intentional roles, I placed lemons that were once living throughout the scene. Looking for and incorporating color was a large part of this creating experience. Stockholder uses lots of bold, neon, bright hues in all of her work. These colors mixed in with the everyday objects allows the space to become dynamic and interactive. I love how the colors she uses all play off each other and guide your eyes throughout the space. I tried to execute this as well in my own work. This sculpture is made up of all different kinds of objects found from the house (partly due to moving home from college and trying to accomodate to the quarantine life). Things include: mirrors, tin buckets, wood frames (some with wire), table and chairs, lots of plastic Tupperware, mats, lights, a lamp, laundry basket, yarn, jewelry, a couple clocks, and several other misc. objects. One last element that I wanted to incorporate into this work to make it my own is by really filling the space. In all different medias, I tend to fill the space I am given, unafraid to work in bigger scales. This gives my studio project and characteristic of me and my personality at the same time as I establish a conversation with my assigned artist.
