why did i write a sequel to spirit-touched? easy answer! because both of those fics were born out of impulse decisions and minimal sleep! (also: because the level of YEARNING in this entire au appeals to me on a deep level. hell yeah intense and unconsummated passion.)

it’s that time of year again!!

what with coronavirus throwing my life into some degree of upheaval, i didn’t have the time to make the usual jenny day post in march – but i refuse to let anything completely remove this day from the calendar. (haha.) i’m scheduling it on my birthday this year, because 1) may 23rd is fortuitously about a month from now, giving ppl ample time to come up with something to contribute, and 2) there is no birthday present i want more than new jenny content. (i will not pretend i have unselfish motives here.)

anyway, jenny calendar day is (as always) a day to celebrate everyone’s favorite ALIVE technopagan (that’s not me being passive-aggressive anymore HELL yeah) and all the amazing things she’s done, both in her original run and in the boom comics!

started an apocalypse!

caught feelings for a man just as disastrous as she is!

found herself both directly and indirectly responsible for the destruction of at least two (2) computers!

(notice how this list does not include the one thing she was SENT to sunnydale to do. that one, she did not do.)

“No,” said Rupert. “You have pushed me far beyond my limits, Jenny, and I draw the line right here.” But he was using that voice he’d used at the monster trucks, all playfully-stiff-upper-lip and helplessly shining eyes, and Jenny knew it was because he knew this was something she loved. “Right here–” He gestured, slipped on the waxed floors, and had to grab at Jenny to steady himself, his hand landing a bit lower than her lower back.

Jenny didn’t mind. Jenny opposite-of-minded, actually, they’d just saved the goddamn world and a little PDA felt really fucking appropriate at the moment. She tugged at his belt loop until he collided with her, all but knocking her into the wall. God, he was so cute when he was off balance (figuratively or literally, in this case). “You’re telling me you don’t like my roller derby short-shorts?” she asked coquettishly.

Rupert rolled his eyes. “Fishing for compliments, now, are we?”

“I’m shameless and insatiable.” Jenny raised a leg, wrapping it around Rupert’s waist, and thank god for dancer’s training and natural flexibility, if only to get That Look on her husband’s face. “Besides which, you haven’t seen my moves.”

“Five years with you and you think I’ve not gotten a handle on your moves?” Rupert’s hands were steady and confident on her waist, which did lend some legitimacy to his point. When they first started dating, he’d be weak in the knees if she so much as brushed her hand against his, and now–well. Now he had her pressed against the wall of a roller derby link, and damn, how the hell had he ended up with all the leverage in this situation? “You think so little of me, my darling.”

“You set the bar pretty low, that first date.”

“That was hardly a date, that was Willow and Xander and a truly atrocious American football game.”

“See? My point exactly.”

Rupert opened his mouth, shut it, rolled his eyes, and cupped Jenny’s face in his hands, kissing her with that dizzying finesse that never failed to make her weak in the knees. Jenny’s leg dropped from his waist and she melted into him, but just as the kiss was getting good, he pulled back very fast, startling her enough to make her lose her balance. Roller skates zigzagging, she grabbed at the wall, outraged. “You don’t play fair!” she managed, wiping a hand across her mouth and definitely smearing her lipstick.

“When have I ever?” said Rupert, attempted to skate gracefully away, and nearly fell down himself. Jenny skated forward in what really was a graceful maneuver and caught him in her arms. “Thank you, dear,” he said, looking a bit embarrassed.

“I’ve got you,” said Jenny, mouth twitching. “Slow steps.”

These are my go-to fics when it’s dark and I’m all alone and I’m scared or freaked out or whatever.

THE GILES THING by DRSQUIDLOVE : This is THE Xander/Giles fic. Epic in its length, character development, character voices and plot. Starts with 18 year old Giles coming to the future (season 3 BtVS), and things get complicated with Xander. My favorite parts are when we reach S4 and things take off with Giles and Xander, then the other Scoobies are in the know - I just LOVE when we get the reaction of other Scoobies to the ship and they’re sympathetic and real - not lazy character bashing writing - my favorites were Joyce and Tony Harris’ reactions.

THINGS WE NEVER TALK ABOUT by NWHEPCAT: Xander/Larry. What if it was Xander who got to read others’ thoughts instead of Buffy? One of the best coming out stories for Xander, what if Xander was the gay one instead of Willow? Not to mention Xander still wanting to help Faith after she tried to strangle him, wanting to use his new power to read her mind. Favorite parts: Larry’s characterization, his character development, and his affection for Xander, and how being away from Xander brings out the bully in him. Then there’s Xander and Giles’ bonding. I love the realistic portrayal of Xander’s parents, and I love Larry’s mother and how his father shaped him to be the bully we know.

FOR GIVING, MOMENT and LIMITS by Benaresq: Xander/Angel. I usually read it at XanderXtreme, but since it’s no longer with us *sniff* I had to find it elsewhere. This one hurts, deep, deep, deep into my Xander soul. The part with Xander and the scissors torture will always be my favorite - it’s really not as creepy as it sounds. Actually it was the funniest part in this angsty, heartbreaking fic.

SWEET REVENGE by JACKSON_RAYNE I always, always find myself reading this one. It has cast some sort of spell on me ‘cause I never get tired of reading it. Xander/Spike. S5 rewrite of the show but Spander style. Spike wants to hurt Buffy for rejecting him through Xander -unexpected consequences happen of course.

THE LEARNING CURVE by il_mio_capitano : Immediately after Becoming Part 2. How Giles came to learn about Buffy’s note and Joyce’s first encounter with Buffy’s “watcher.”

EMPTY by LUSCIOUSSPIKE: Season 7, during End of Days. Willow said that the house was empty…but was it really? This scene explains the weird way Xander stared at space while the others discussed not finding Buffy in the house Willow’s spell led them to.

HOW DID HE GET IT BACK? by LUSCIOUSSPIKE As every respectable Spander fan must have noticed, when Xander lit Spike’s cigarette in Spiral he put the lighter into his pocket. Now how did Spike get his lighter back?

XANDER 2.0 by CORDELIANNE: Set during “Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered.” Buffy helps Xander prep for his date with Cordelia. Buffy seeing Xander’s bedroom for the first time. It’s adorable.
