The person feeling overwhelmed brings their pent-up bad feelings into the open air, and in exchange the listener offers empathy and reassurance, or at the very least a calm and supportive emotional space for that person to do it. Passively listening is an active process that takes focus and effort, and it often changes the listeners’ state of mind.

Venting without asking is like stomping into a room and dumping a bag of your personal trash all over the floor, sorting through to make sure there’s nothing important in it, then when you’re confident that it really is all trash, picking up the big peices and trotting merrily off to throw it away. You may be done with your process but the other person is still left to handle the stink and the residue that you left on their floor.
