Next Sunday is the annual 2017 BAFTA awards. But this is a beekeeping blog so forget the BAFTA’s. The BeeFTA’s are where it’s at! This year is the first annual BeeFTA awards, celebrating all that’s good and bad in the world of bees.

Winners of this years awards will be secured in the BeeFTA hall of fame as the first ever recipients of a prestigious BeeFTA. *Please note - A BeeFTA is definitely not a felted bee glued to a plinth. Okay yes it is.

ive got 7 chickens, four laying hens and three roosters, all healthy and under a year old. they dont have to all go together.

i live in the woods & my area is just too full of predators… i cant seem to keep them out. its stressing me out & my chickens deserve better!! besides, i am moving within the year and will need to give them up anyway by then.

So, winter is coming and the bees have less and less to flowers to pollinate, which means that there aren’t many flowers for bees to eat from. This wouldn’t be that much of a problem if the bees weren’t dying because usually, they create enough honey for them eat throughout the year even if there aren’t any flowers.

Here are some tips if you are a beekeeper or just want to help save the bees:

Winter Beekeeping To-Do List:

-Monitor the hive entrance, make sure to brush out any dead bees or snow out of the entrance. 

-MAKE SURE YOUR BEES HAVE ENOUGH FOOD. The late winter and early spring are when bees colonies can die of starvation, so you NEED to check on them. 

-Clean and repair your equipment for when spring comes. 

-Order new supplies if you need them.

Winter To-Do List for People Who Just Want to Spread Some Bee Love:

-For bee lovers who don’t have a bee hive, there isn’t much you can do to really help except for planting flowers that bloom during the early spring and the late fall so that bees can find food right after winter and right before they retreat to their hive for the winter.
