Over on Twitter this week, I’ve had a lot of fun reimagining Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Daily Doodle.

I decided to put all my character designs together here in one place.

The hardest character to design was Mr Willy Wonka himself. I’ve always found him an interesting figure.

He’s eccentric, yet he’s hidden himself away for so long. I also think there is a sadness there - he’s starting to think about the next part of his life, as well as a nervousness and anxiety. He’s clearly extremely clever, but finds people confusing. Very complicated! My vision of him here is of someone using their clothing to cover up the fact that he’s actually quite shy.

His specs would be lime green and his jacket silver and quite glitzy. I imagine he probably got the parrot walking came from a souvenir shops when he was off exploring the world and finding the Oompa Loompas!
