Mobile game teaches car safety technology.

A new mobile game is on the app market that attempts to answer a question many drivers have today: “My car does what?”

The game, Dashboard Blitz, helps educate players about the beeps, flashing icons and technologies that are common in many of today’s cars. If you’ve ever wondered how to turn off that lit icon telling you that you need an oil change, you know what we mean.

Free and available for iOS and Android devices, the game’s players work at a virtual auto expo booth where they answer customers’ questions about crash prevention technologies like blind-spot monitors and back-up cameras. The game is a part of the MyCarDoesWhat campaign, created by the National Safety Council and the University of Iowa, to educate about current and upcoming car safety technologies. The game’s “visitors” can try out simulators with the latest in car safety technology.

Objectives of Dashboard Blitz include: Selecting safety features that meet a customer’s needs; progressing through 30 levels to gain points and unlock upgrades—from mechanic helpers to rocket-powered roller skates—and battling the clock while answering as many customer questions as possible.

HOW TO PLAY:

Greet a visitor entering your expo space and ask what problem they’re having.

See a clip of their driving mishap and pick the safety feature that could help.

Drag the visitor to the simulator with that safety feature so they can try it.

Find out if the safety feature matched—then score points or answer a follow-up.

Reset the car for the next customer.

At the end of each level, you’ll see your score, how many questions you got right, and how many visitors you helped. Play again for a better score to get more upgrades and continue playing to see what other safety features your customers can try out.

Your car insurance premium is calculated from a bunch of variables that help determine the amount you’ll wind up paying. Below is a look at several key factors affecting those premiums, plus some suggestions for keeping costs down:

Your Coverage and Deductibles. Car insurance providers allow you to choose your deductible, so naturally the specifics of your coverage and deductibles play a big role in your monthly payment. Carbon fiber, plastics fueling automotive advances.

The cars we ride in may soon be reduced in weight by half and the fuel that we place in them might be efficiently improved by 35 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. At least as a partial result of those findings, automakers are escalating the use of composite auto parts made with carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) in their vehicles. Welcome to Tomorrowland today.

The growing trend toward “lightweighting” vehicles via lighter, advanced materials such as CFRP is driven in large part by the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) efficiency standards that decree that autos average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Also, according to a survey by J.D. Power, the market research firm, purchasers of new vehicles indicate that fuel economy remains the most influential factor in determining which vehicle they select.

Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, already a staple in the highest level of motorsports, Formula One racing, are both lightweight and inordinately strong—up to 10 times stronger and 50 percent lighter than steel.

“The combination of carbon fiber and lightweight plastics creates an advanced composite matrix, something much tougher than [older, established] materials could be on their own,” said Steve Russell, vice president of plastics for the American Chemistry Council, in a recent online article in BodyShopBusiness.com. “These advanced materials will help automakers reach their fuel efficiency goals, reduce emissions, and save consumers money at the pump.”

Another by-product of considerable value beyond improved fuel efficiency is the ability of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics’ components to contribute to safety, since they can absorb up to 12 times more crash energy than steel.

Five muscle car-era features that should return.

Last year, according to an online article in Yahoo! Autos, Dodge produced 1,000 special-edition 2014 Challenger R/Ts with “shaker” hoods—large air intakes protruding from an opening in the center of the hood. (The name “shaker” comes from the scoop’s tendency to shake from the torque of the engine to which it is attached.) The element is a throwback to a once-great time of wild performance-inspired car features. Here are four other muscle car-era features that should find their way back into today’s cars.

The Dual/Gate shifter. You could buy this accessory for any floor-shifted automatic in the 1960s and ’70s. The idea behind it was that, under normal driving conditions, you’d leave it in drive, but when you wanted to get sporty, you simply banged through the gears (up or down) on the right side of the gate with complete safety, thanks to the neutral lockout. No missed shifts, no false neutrals.

Liquid Tire Chain Traction Improver. According to Chevrolet order guides (in 1969 only), you could select RPO V75 and receive two cans of “Liquid Tire Chain Traction Improver,” which were then inserted into two sleeves in the trunk. When you pressed a dash-mounted button, the material in the cans sprayed onto the tires and provided added traction in snow and ice. Nose cones and two-foot high rear wings. The Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird, influenced by the superspeedways at Daytona and Talladega, sported flush rear windows, nose cones, and two-foot-tall rear wings, allowing race versions to crack the 200 mph barrier for the first time. The Road Runner Horn. Who could forget the unforgettable “Meep Meep” Saturday morning sound of cartoon’s The Roadrunner? Plymouth, at a cost of $10,000, turned the iconic sound into its horn fixture for their Road Runner model between 1968 and 1970. Driving time/distance relative to level of education, survey says.

According to a recently released joint survey from the American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety and the Urban Institute, the average distance and time spent driving increase in relation to higher levels of education. A driver with a grade school or some high school education drives an average of 19.9 miles and 32 minutes daily, while a college graduate drives an average of 37.2 miles and 58 minutes.

The study, which observed motorists’ driving patterns from May 2013 through May 2014, revealed other interesting statistics, including:

Women take more driving trips, but men spend 25 percent more time behind the wheel and drive 35 percent more miles than women.

Drivers, on average, make two driving trips per day, taking an average of 46 minutes.

The average number of household vehicles (2.1) was greater than the average number of drivers in households (1.8).

Motorists in the South drive the most (11,826 miles annually) of any section in the country, while those in the Northeast drive the least (8,468 miles per year).

Teenagers and seniors over the age of 75 drive less than any other age group; motorists 30-49 years old drive an average of 13,140 miles annually, more than any other age group.

Refinishes: Looking Ahead

Every paint manufacturer has a common quest: to create a perfect color match. In recent years this goal has swelled beyond simply achieving color match to also include going “green” as well, through research and development plus product introductions featuring low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) solvent-based and waterborne systems that stand up to the industry’s national standards.

“Shops are concerned about getting a product that will provide the same color and [drying] speed they’re used to,” says the global product manager of one well-known paint manufacturer. Fortunately, several factors make compliance with the new approach less of a headache and expense for body shops. Waterborne conversion training and a range of equipment to suit various budgets supports this new process by giving shops choices should they opt to switch over to water. For many, all that is required is to switch paint types.

“We look at a product like [low-VOC solvent-based paint] as giving shops a new lease on life, because they can put this product in without increasing their costs or investing, and then when regulations come, they’re compliant,” says the marketing manager for another national paint maker.

No extraordinary commitment is involved with using a low-VOC solvent-based paint. Simply purchase the product and substitute it for the national rule formulations you’ve been using. Meanwhile, waterborne has grown significantly more sophisticated since the first generation systems were introduced through the Clean Air Act regulations back in 1963. (For shop owners, many options exist for “cleaning up” a paint operation via an array of low-VOC solvent-based and waterborne systems.)

Cost-minded shop managers can strike a balance between meeting VOC requirements while maintaining costs and ensuring quality. But, warns one quality control manager and paint chemist, “If the cost [isn’t in line], then shops are not going to buy low-VOC products if they can still use national rule.”

Looking down the line, premium quality non-toxic and zero-VOC paints and primers have proven durable in the business and hold up to other less-safe premium paints. “It’s not only products but also process-related,” comments one new products introduction manager, referring to the training and support necessary to give paint technicians the skills to not only pick a perfect color match but also how to best use new products on the market.

Bizarre Body Shop Tales: Store Mannequins Cause of Repeated Crashes

As everyone knows, in the car repair business, crashes make for good business. The fact that gain is made off another’s misfortunes is hardly unique. Take the funeral business, for instance, or hospitals. But even when collision claims routinely summon up business for body shops, there is still the occasional odd story or bizarre tale involved in an accident’s circumstances that makes for, well, interesting reading. Consider this unusual scenario that occurred more than once in one major American city:

According to Oklahoma City police, eight crashes occurred within in one week’s time in the area surrounding Hustler Hollywood since its opening on June 12, 2014—all as a result of rubbernecking. The store displays several scantily-clad mannequins in its storefront windows. Obviously, some locals found it distracting. "I had a minor fender bender looking at the mannequins in the window of the new Hustler Hollywood store," a resident noted to local TV station KOCO 5 News. "We both (drivers) agreed that it was going to cause a lot of accidents." Other drivers saw it differently. “You see worse things walking in the mall and in the movies,” said another area dweller, her message evident: Distracted drivers must focus on traffic when driving. Hustler Hollywood said there was nothing “overly provocative” about the displays, and, interestingly, said it had no plans to remove the mannequins from the storefront. (Good news for Oklahoma City body and repair shops!)
