“c’mon y/n! you got this! go! go!” ava shouts from the other side of the table as i tried to color coordinate stacking my cups.
next to me chan knocks over a few blue cups off the table in the process of stacking his green cups. i scream when i pick up the stack of pink cups to stack on top of my blue cups knocking off my green stack. chan raises his hand in the air just as i finished stacking all my cups together in color coordination.
“nope! nope! nope! disqualified! sorry channie. you used both hands at the end.” isabella points out. “y/n wins this round.”
jen whines to isabella trying to explain that what she saw wasn’t true. i cheer in victory with ava hugging her.
“okay! next game!” seungcheol shouts.
round after round everyone alternates between different partners. the cheering and competitiveness from everyone intensifies making my adrenaline race through my veins. each round that went by meant another failed attempt at asking chan to be my partner. for every round he kept being partnered up with jen.
“okay the next game we are going to play is the paper dance.” isabella calls out. “so everyone get in a group of twos.”
loud voices collide over one another as everyone searches for a partner. one by one each of my friends all paired off with one another. i browse around the room for a partner when a pair of brown eyes lock with mine. chan smiles walking towards me when a certain red head steps into his view. i shrug my shoulders out of disappointment. they both exchange a few words then jen interlaces her fingers with his. chan follows behind her taking a newspaper with them from the table and stood across the other side of the room next to seungcheol and jeonghan. chan doesn’t care to look at me once, only engaging in conversation with jen.
maybe he wasn’t looking at me earlier. maybe i was just imagining it. maybe he was looking at something else. he didn’t look back at me like he wanted to apologize or anything like he usually does. in fact he hasn’t spoke or talked much with me much today. it’s not like he was interested in me like i thought. just focus on the games.
my heart sinks to my stomach watching him smile as she whispers something into his ear as the corners of her lips rise. i browse the room again when a different pair of brown eyes meets mine. mingyu. his tall muscular frame walks towards me asking me to be his partner. i nod happily taking his hand as we walk off to the middle of the floor. there was about nine different partners scattered around the room with their newspaper on the ground.
the music starts to play and we dance circling around the newspaper. the music stops and everyone quickly steps onto the paper. isabella goes around making sure no one’s feet is outside of the paper. she resumes the music stopping at random times causing everyone to scream each time.
i shift between my feet holding jen close to me as she presses her head against my chest. her arms around my waist. i look over jen’s shoulder to observe the others when i hear a certain infectious laugh from across the room. y/n was wrapped up in mingyu’s arm. his lips hovering near her ear whispering as she bites back another laugh.
something rages inside of me at the sight of mingyu being so close and intimate with her. y/n nods her head at his whispers before she leans up to whisper into his ear. he lowers himself to hear her better and she gently caress his cheek while talking. he laughs securing his hand tighter around her waist.
joshua clears the remaining couples after eliminating jun and ava. mingyu carefully let’s go of y/n, his hand still on the small of her back tracing random circles. she leans her head comfortably against his arm while waiting for isabella to play the song again. if i didn’t know them i would assume they were together. a bitter taste fills my mouth watching them cling onto one another.
“chan. chan. are you listening to me?”
“sorry, what did you say?” i finally look at jen.
“i asked for the next round did you want to try piggyback since the paper is getting smaller and we both can’t fit.” she repeats.
“yeah. yeah, that sounds like a plan.” i tell her.
the music plays up again and we start circling around the paper. jen sways her hips to the pop rhythm of sabrina carpenter’s a nonsense christmas. however my focus is no longer on her or this game. instead i can’t stop looking over at y/n who is lip syncing along to the song with mingyu as they dance together. the way her body sways melting into the rhythm of the song and her enthusiasm with the song could have anyone mesmerized by her aura. the music cuts off at the second chorus and jen quickly hops into my back. i loop my arms under her thighs as she hooks her arms around my neck.
“ahhh! kim mingyu!” y/n shrieks giggling.
i spin around finding y/n tossed over mingyu’s shoulder. he stood with pride holding onto her tightly with her ass right next to his face. our friends all coo and tease after him. the rage inside me earlier had disappeared leaving behind a deadly inferno in its awake.
“chan! jen! you’re out!” isabella calls out.
i look down at my feet not realizing i had stepped off the paper. jen hops down from back pouting her lips. i look around the room and didn’t even realize we were the only two partners left during the game which meant…
“y/n and mingyu win!” isabella announced, handing them their prize bag.
mingyu carefully sets y/n back down as they jump around together celebrating their victory. she pulls out a hundred dollar gift card to target. mingyu tells her something in her ear handing her the gift card. she smiles looking at him like he hung the moon and stars for her.
the others had clear out the floor to open gifts but i immediately walked out of the room and head to the kitchen. the amount of chemistry between mingyu and y/n felt suffocating. i couldn’t stand another second of it unless we wanted christmas turn into a boxing match. i take a big gulp from my cup trying to cool off and erase the images of y/n and mingyu together.
“just so you know, there is nothing happening between me and y/n.” a voice interrupts my calm.
“good to know.” i look over my shoulder at mingyu who browses the fridge for a cold one.
how did he get in here so fast? was he watching me? how did he know i was thinking of y/n not jen?
“it is good for you to know so you can stop plotting my death in your head.”
“i wasn’t plotting your death in my head.”
“stop trying to deny it. you don’t think i saw the way you were eyeing me the entire game.” he half laughs patting my back. “just a little advice before we go in there, if you want her then go tell her.”
after gift opening i sat in between isabella, ava and mingyu who were exchanging restaurant recommendations while in london. mingyu had told me earlier that he had booked a trip to london for a few weeks which i was happy for him because he has always talked about wanting to go on trip there someday.
“so what’s making your pretty face sulk?” isabella caresses her hand against my cheek.
“i am not sulking.” i crossed my arms against my chest, swatting her hand away.
“it’s not a what, but a who.” mingyu said knowingly.
“it’s chan, isn’t it?” ava chimes.
“it’s not him. it’s not anyone or anything.”
“y/n, stop being such a wuss and tell him already.” isabella hissed.
“why should i? he seems so wrapped up with jen. i doubt he cares about me like that.” his hands were getting pretty comfortable being all over her body. the way he looked and smiled at her when she was talking to him or even when she wasn’t looking at him.
“trust me. he cares.” mingyu takes a swig of his beer. “he kept giving me death glares every time i had to touch you during the paper dance game.”
“death glares don’t mean anything.” i deadpanned.
“if they don’t mean anything then why did you keep doing it to jen every round.” mingyu pointed out in a matter of a fact.
i glare at mingyu. who’s side was he even on? i huff a breath and grumbled, “because she was hogging my man for every game round. you would think she would try to diverse herself for every round but nope.”
“she wouldn’t be hogging him if you and chan just both confessed you liked each other. this pining thing going on between you two for the last few months is getting ridiculous.” isabella spat, tossing a piece of her cookie into her mouth.
ava takes my hand into hers, “y/n, we love you. you’re an amazing, beautiful girl and i say this with so much love and support but if you don’t confess now then you’re gonna lose your man to jen.”
i hated how right my friends were. i only knew jen through ava so we weren’t close but i knew she would respect girl code if i would just confess my feelings to chan. i wonder around the house searching for him since i haven’t seen in the last forty minutes. now thinking about it, i haven’t seen jen either. when i turn down the hall i heard soft whispers and chuckles. i peer the corner only to find chan and jen sat at the bottom of the stairs. her knees brushed against his and he leans back taking in her lips onto his.
i take a few steps back into the hall making my way to the kitchen. the courage i had earlier dies. my heart shattering into a million pieces. isabella is the first one to notice me but i force a grin to my lips. i up the wattage of my grin to not seem too fake but not too sad either. i join them again as mingyu hands me drink he made.
chan walks back into the kitchen with jen following shortly behind him. i overheard her mention that she was going to leave soon. ava asked her to stay longer because dahlia would be stopping by but jen tells her that she has some work stuff to go over. chan walks over to jen handing her beer and she nods at him giving a soft but weak grin. chan’s eyes meet mine and something different flashes over them. his hand signals for me walk with him but i shake my head and sip on my drink.
slowly everyone disappears out of the kitchen heading to living room for the intense game of mario kart. all my brain could do for the past i-don’t-know minutes was replay the kiss chan and jen shared.
did it mean anything to him? did he like it? does he like her the same ways she likes him? were they dating now? did they do more than just kiss?
all these questions pounded into my head like a mallet. i make way towards the sink to wash some dishes hoping it would distract me. however the butterflies in my stomach take flight when i felt someone standing next to me. i kept my eyes focus on the dishes.
“what are you doing here, chan?”
“nothing. i just want to spend time with you.”
“shouldn’t you be spending time elsewhere.”
“there’s nowhere else i want to be.”
“are you sure jen won’t go dizzy being away from you and missing you? you’ve been spending the entire party around her and made out with her by the stairs.”
i gently shove past him to put away the plates in the upper cabinet. chan chuckles leaning back against the counter.
“i should be asking you the same thing. will mingyu be okay being away from you this long? you two seemed quite comfortable with being touchy with each other during the paper dance game.”
“chan, it’s part of the game. it’s not like i made out with him like how you did earlier with jen.”
“are you jealous?” he taunts.
“and what if i am? what is it to you?” i arched an eyebrow. my voice cold and stern.
i heard him chuckle more to himself, “y/n, the entire party i have been wanting to spend time with you. every time there was a new round of games i wanted you to be my partner but jen kept asking me before i could get to you.” he clarifies. “also i wasn’t making out with her by the stairs. she kissed me before i could tell her that i only like her as a friend because i have feelings for you.”
my body freezes at his confession. a tingling excitement sparks up my spine. it takes everything inside me to not scream or show any signs of relief. instead i stood silently staring at him trying to process his sudden confession.
chan must have noticed the sudden shift in my expression and silence. he runs his fingers back through his hair as his ears turn red. “of course, if you don’t feel the same way as me then we can just pretend that i didn’t just confess my feelings and we continue being friends.”
i open my mouth to talk but chan was already halfway out of the kitchen, “lee chan!”
he freezes in place at the sound of his full name and i walk closer to him, “i didn’t think of you as the type to give up so easily.”
“well i was feeling kind-of shy and stupid confessing when you weren’t saying anything and looking at me.”
“well, can i say something then?”
“you know we are under the mistletoe, right?” dino looks up noticing the plant hanging above us. i close the distant between us and mumble, “kiss me.”
“are you sure? you don’t have to do this because you feel bad —-“
i shrug my shoulders letting out a groan before pulling him by his jacket, crashing my lips against his. the knot in my stomach exploded as a rush of euphoria takes over my body. his hands find their way to face caressing my face. i take his bottom lip into mine as my hands squeezed his hips trying to ground myself. he hums in satisfaction making me grin against him.
i slowly pull away pressing my forehead against him, “if that didn’t make it clear enough, i only have feelings for you, lee chan and it’s way more than just a friend.”
chan smirks gazing into my eyes. “so this is it? we’re dating as in boyfriend girlfriend?”
“well take me out on a date first and if it goes well then i’ll let you know the answer.” i teased against his lips.
after talking things out with chan i follow him back to the living room when mingyu spots us. his eyes switching between us like a ping pong ball. a knowing but suspicious smirk forms at the corner of his lips.
“so i take it you two made out? i mean made up?” mingyu teases, biting back a laugh.
i chuckle hiding behind chan as he smiles at him. “you’re lucky you’re taller than me otherwise you would be in trouble right now.”
“aww, channie. i think love has made you more bratty. also that shade of lip stain is not your color and your lips look a bit swollen.” he pulls up his sleeve pretending to wipe away at the smudges.
i laugh covering my face with my hands when chan says, “i would tread lightly if i were you, especially with the way you played during the paper dance with my girl.”
soonyoung calls over chan before mingyu could retort a response between their playful banter. i pull him back for moment and whisper into his, “calm down, channie.you don’t have to be jealous. i have always been yours. no need to threaten one of your best friends.”
he side eyes me grinning and mumbles about how he’s just protecting what’s his. i shake my head at him as he kissed my temple before joining soonyoung and the others. as much as i wanted to stop smiling and walk over all cool and collected, it wasn’t going to happen. all three of them were giving me knowing looks definitely wanting answers. i look back at the other side of couch finding a pair brown eyes already on me. chan winks before turning away to focus back on the game as i continue to fill my friends in the details on my new love life.
