Firstly, I would like to thank you all for the very kind reception to my hiatus announcement post. I already knew that everyone who followed and participated in this blog were wonderful, but I havenât received a single negative response and that means the world to me.
This blog will be on an indefinite hiatus. I am not permanently shutting it down, but for the time being, I will be inactive. So for now, no more daily prompts and no more reblogging submissions. This blog has become more work than fun for me right now, and I also am going into my final year at university, which will take up the majority of my time. I hope to come back and do a month or two at a time on occasion when Iâm able to.
In the meantime, please feel free to continue posting fics with any of the prompts. You can choose whether or not to tag the blog, but I would still appreciate if you could mention where you got the prompt. You can find all 414 prompts in the prompt archive.Â
If you want to read any of the previous submissions, please search them by either using the tag navigation or by looking through the AO3 collection.
Any fics posted to the AO3 collection will still be accepted, as I get email notifications whenever someone posts to it.
I have gotten a couple messages asking if I would like to transfer the ownership of this blog during my absence, and while I truly appreciate the offer, at this time I would prefer not to do so. This project is like my baby, and for now it doesnât feel right to let someone else run it/have access to it.
I canât put into words how incredible my experience has been running this blog. I am so happy that this little section of the fandom has remained entirely positive. Everyone who has submitted something or sent me a message has been wonderful, and I cannot thank you all enough for that.
If you have any more questions, please dm me or send an ask. I will try my best to get to them in a timely manner.
Thank you all again for your continuous support of this blog. đŤśđź

i will be back in a few days with a more formal post which will explain things better, but for now, i want to thank each and every one of you for all your kindness and patience, especially over the past few months. everyone who has ever messaged me or sent an ask has been so incredibly kind and i appreciate it so much more than i can say.

july 13: owl | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 283
â-and you can tell James that if he wants to be on speaking terms again, heâll have to stop leaving his dirty shirts all over the house!â Regulus snapped at Remus, who rolled his eyes.
Remus shuffled to the other side of the living room to relay Regulusâ message to James. After a couple seconds, Remus came shuffling back.
âJames said you guys could talk when you stop going to bed late.â
âWe can talk when he stops setting his alarms for 4 in the morning!â Regulus huffed.
Remus went to James, then came back with his lips pursed. âJames says to remind you that you like it when he goes on morning runs.â
Regulus pinched the bridge of his nose. James got him there. Regulus did like to see him in a tight tank top. Perfect morning view if you asked him. He let out a groan of frustration. âWell, tell himââ
âYeah, you know what?â Remus interrupted sharply, speaking loud enough for both Regulus and James to hear him, âIâm not doing this anymore. Iâm not an owl. You lot can figure this out on your own.â Remus gathered his things and left out of the front door of James and Regulusâ flat.
Regulus looked across at James who was smirking.Â
Jamesâ smirk turned into a loving grin. âCome here, love,â James opened his arms and Regulus went to him, âCan we make up now?â
âYeah,â Regulus whispered. âAnd, for the record, I donât mind when you go on morning runs, darling.â
James pressed a kiss to his forehead. âYeah, youâve made it obvious, Reg.â
Regulus laughed then pouted up at his boyfriend. âBut, seriously, James, please pick up your shirts.â
Regulus sat in his office, tapping on the bottom of the table with his nails absently. He only half-listened to the meeting he was in, exhausted. His eyes flicked to examine Lucius Malfoy, who was presenting to the board.
He rolled his eyes, the proposal was just for show, Regulus knew what Lucius wanted. He wanted the Black Family Corporation to invest in his new startup and they were not going to do it.
Their meeting was interrupted by a rap at the door. Regulus spun away from the pout on Luciusâs face to the door. His assistant stepped in, head bowed and handed Regulus a note.
âYou have an owl,â he murmured. Regulus took the note and waved his approval for the assistant to leave. The man did so in a rush.Â
Lucius clicked his tongue, âIf I could have your attentionâŚâ he prompted but Regulus merely waved at him in the same dismissive manner. Lucius fell quiet.
Regulus opened the note to find his husbandâs handwriting.
Mr. Black, I await you for our âmeetingâ in the downstairs conference room. Thereâs been a bit of a clothing mishap.
-J
Regulus had to force himself not to grin as he stood and excused himself, âWeâll continue another time,â he dismissed Lucius and made his way to meet James immediately.
Letting his eyes glide over the skies, he looked behind him to check the kids were still following along. It was late, the once clear sky started to turn a dark blue. The activity was to go for a night walk, find a nice place in the woods that wasnât too far from the main camp, and teach the teens how to start a fire.
Much to Regulusâ disappointment, James stood at the back while he stood forward, guiding everyone to the spot that he and James walked to yesterday to check it out. Theyâd set up some fairy lights, lay down some blankets and packed tools in their bag to start fires.
The distant sound of an owl hooting echoed through his ears, getting louder and softer until it stopped.
He weaved the silver chain strung his dark coloured jean shorts through his hands, feeling the cold metal brush against his hot skin, narrowing his eyes to see the distant glow of fairy lights through the towering trees.
Suddenly, he heard a weight drop into the grass next to him, the heat of a body and a wide smile looking up at him. âHi!â June grinned ear to ear.
âHi June.â He spoke in a softer voice than normal. He wasnât one to play favourites, but June reminded him so much of himself when he was younger, struggling with gender identity in a household like the one he grew up in was definitely a challenge. He would always be so thankful to his friends for helping him transition after he left, leaving was by far the best decision heâs ever made. âHow are you?â
They hummed. âAlrightâŚâ They trailed off.
âWhat?â Regulus asked sceptically.
âOh nothing.â June waved their hands in the air dismissively, leaving a few moments of silence before looking behind at where all the other students walked, and then back at Regulus. âYou just kept looking behind yourself, looking really fucking depressed might I add, then sulked off again.â They shrugged.
Regulus felt his eyes widen, a noise of offends escaping his mouth. âHey! Donât analyse me.â He retorted. âAnd Iâm not sulking, donât be nosy.â
âOkay!â They raised their hands in surrender, a smirk still lingering on their lips. âIf it helps, James is wearing the exact same expression.â
âWhat-â
âBye!â They jogged off with a wave.
â-The fuck.â He finished after they left. âI hate kids.â He grumbled.
-
The lights were glistening, the fire hissing, the owls hooting and James Potters eyes shining. It was beautiful out, and in Regulusâ opinion, Jamesâ face only added to that.
They sat together, legs entangled together far more than they actually needed, ignoring the fact that they had a whole blanket to themselves.
Gladly, the kids had managed to start some small fires, then James gave in and lit a bigger one so everyone could roast their marshmallows.
âHave you ever roasted skittles on a fire?â James spoke out of the blue.
âExcuse me?â
âHave you ever-â
Regulus coughed out a laugh. âNo I heard you the first time, James. But of course not.â He rolled his eyes, emphasising his point with a gag.
âItâs actually very nice, Regulus!â
âAbomination.â
-
They carried on like this all night, bickering, laughing, throwing random bits of food and leaves at each other while they waited for the time to pass.
Now, Regulus sat lay on his back while James made sure he could still see the teens. He looked up at the full moon, it was dotted through the leaves of the trees but still quite visible and as bright as ever before.
He rolled his head to the side slightly, catching sight of Jamesâ veined dark hands spread out on the blanket next to him. Every now and again heâd shift, playing with his rings and fiddling with his hands randomly. All Regulus wanted to do right now was place his hand atop the older boys, but he couldnât just do that.
So he just waited, he wasnât sure what for, but he did anyway. Maybe for James to look at him, all so he could make a snarky comment because he doesnât know what else to say, but James seems to weirdly like it, so that works in his favour.
It wasnât until James turned his head to look directly at Regulus, catching his eye and holding it with his hazel doe irises for a few seconds before reaching that same hand out to him.
The coolness of his fingers combed through Regulusâ hair. It was quick, but soon James grabbed a leaf and held it up with an amused expression on his face.
His tan skin was engulfed with the light of the flames before them, highlighting even the tiniest of details and turning his eyes a whole new colour which Regulus decided was so utterly gorgeous.
James reached another finger out, brushing the loose curl of Regulusâ raven hair behind and tucked into his overly pierced ears. He gave a proud smile, nodding and tossing the leaf on the floor.
âThere, thatâs better.â He spoke softly, clearly not aware to the awe struck wonder on Regulus face, and the red flush that was certainly not from the heat of the flames. Even the way Regulus froze and watched him smile and hum along to a random song, and James just chuckled.
God, this man was oblivious, because Regulus was sure he was doing a pretty shit job at hiding this.
Jamesâs owl, Iris, was a very busy owl. Not only did James use her, but so did all of his friends. Sure they could use the school owls, but Iris loved taking letters to Remusâs mum, Peterâs gran and Siriusâs orders to Gambol and Japes. Sheâd come back with boxes of pranks that Sirius shared with them all. But the most interesting person to borrow her was Regulus Black.Â
James had caught him in the Owlery, late one Sunday evening, attempting to attach a rather thick envelope to one of the schoolâs barn owls. The owl was having none of it and kept nipping at his fingers.Â
âOuch!â Regulus yelped and sucked his finger into his mouth, soothing the sore skin. âRude!â The owl hooted indignantly at him, ruffled his feathers and took off up to the rafters and refused to come back down.Â
âImportant letter is it?â James asked from the doorway. Regulus spun towards him, his wand slipping into his hand. James put his hands into the air, showing he didnât mean any harm. Regulus slowly lowered his wand, but James noticed that he didn't put it away.Â
âItâs none of your business,â Regulus snarled at him as he tried to coax another owl down.Â
âYou can borrow Iris if you want,â James said as he whistled lightly and the beautiful short-eared owl dropped down onto his outstretched arm and nibbled his finger affectionately when he held it out to her. âI thought you had an owl?â James suddenly remembered. Regulus had a huge Eagle owl like the rest of the Black family members. Regulusâs eyes dropped to his letter.Â
âEros is too recognisable,â He murmured so quietly that James almost missed what he said.Â
âAs long as it isnât to someone dangerous, Iris is all yours. She loves delivering letters. Donât you sweetheart?â He asked the owl, she hooted happily and fluffed up her feathers. Regulus looked down at his letter again.Â
âItâs for Andromeda,â He whispered, keeping his eyes down. James beamed at him.Â
âOh, Iris knows where she lives, sheâs been there before. Seriously, you can use her anytime,â James reached out and took the letter from Regulus. He tied it to Irisâs leg and took her to the window. He looked over his shoulder to make sure Regulus was okay with it. Regulus clenched his jaw but nodded his consent. James lifted Iris up, and she flew off into the dusk.Â
They watched her fly until the gathering darkness swallowed her. âCome on,â James said, turning to look at Regulus. âIâll walk you back to the castle. Regulus rolled his eyes but followed James out of the Owlery.Â
They walked back across the lawn side by side in silence. James opened the entrance door for him and they entered the castle. âGoodnight,â James called after Regulus as he headed towards the dungeons.Â
âNight,â He said back, rewarding James with a small smile. James felt his heart soar, and he walked the long way up to Gryffindor Tower with a spring in his step and a goon grin lighting up his face.  Â

Regulus had known from an early age. Well, he hadn't known know -he didn't understand exactly what it meant or all that it would entail, but he knew. He didn't go around debating it in his mind. He didn't have to 'figure it out'. He just knew. His knowledge about at it grew with him, but it was always there.
As a kid, before he learned how the world worked, he didn't care. why would he? It's not like he thought it was wrong. At that point he didn't even know that this was something other people considered to be wrong.
Thankfully, he didn't talk much about it as a kid, -though he didn't talk much at all- so no one around him knew. After he learned what other people thought, what his own family thought, he was very thankful that no one knew. He had intended to keep it like that for the rest of his life.
The knowledge soon became a burden. He wished that he didn't know, that he wasn't so sure. He still tried to hope that it would change someday, that he just might be able to... but deep down he knew. He wished that he had the ability to hope.
When his friends spoke about relationships, and girls, Regulus tried to stay neutral about it. It didn't take long for him to realise that he couldn't ignore it, that he had to pretend. So he told them that there was indeed a girl whom he liked, but refused to say who it was.
His lies soon grew, when they asked further questions. What did she look like? Had they kissed? Did she like him back?
He said that she was a brunette, with warm eyes and round glasses. That they hadn't kissed, and that there were no way that she liked him back.
Well, what is she like then? Have you even talked to her?
Regulus said that she was kind, very kind, funny, and that she was in the year above them. He said that he had talked to her only a little bit.
Barty and Evan bombarded him constantly with guesses of who it was, but Regulus never said anything. He neither confirmed nor denied.
The years went on, and his friends moved through girlfriends. He didn't. When they asked him about it, he said that he still liked the same girl as before.
They told him that he should go after her. Or that he should find someone else, since it clearly didn't work.
He pondered the idea, -of finding a someone to 'fake-like'- But he couldn't bring himself to do it.
HIs final straw was when his brother, after having barely even spoken to him the whole school year, came strotting into his room during the summer break after Regulus fifth year. Apparently, he found the idea of pestering Regulus about girls, funny.
Regulus did not find it funny.
He thought that he would be free of lying about girls during the summer, but no, first his mother started mentioning him COURTING someone, and then Sirius.
"C'mon Reggie, you can tell me!" Sirius had said. "Or are you too embarrassed? Maybe i can give you some tips if you're having trouble with the ladies."
(Which, gross. -Regulus didn't want to hear that)
"I don't want any fucking ladies!" Regulus had finally roared out.
"Merlin, fine - sensitive subject." Sirius had said, starting to turn away to leave.
It was the first time he had said that to anyone. It was the first time he even said it out loud. Sirius hadn't even understood what he had meant, but regulus still felt all the blood draining from his face as he realised what he had said.
He felt faint, and he couldn't breath. A sob escaped Regulus' mouth, which stopped Sirius in his tracks.
Regulus sat completely still on his bed, hands covering his face, covering the tears that had started falling from his eyes. He was thankful that he couldn't see his brother's reaction. He should probably obliviate sirius. if only he knew how to.
He didn't expect the bed to dip next to him. Sirius had taken a seat next to him. As close as possible without touching him, Sirius knew that Regulus didn't really like touch. But when regulus looked up to his brother's face, and didn't see any disappointment, or disgust, he leaned towards Sirius, meeting him in a hug.
They embraced each other for awhile, not saying anything, waiting for Regulus to calm down.
When he finally had managed to stop crying, he leaned back from their hug. Starting to wipe away any remaining tears on his face.
"So." Sirius said. "You fancy blokes then?"
His tone was neutral. Non-judging and non-condescending, but regulus still couldn't face his brother when he nodded his answer.
"That's alright." Sirius said, and threw an arm across Regulus' shoulders. "Anyone in particular?"
There was a certain face that immediately showed itself in regulus' mind. It was something he'd barely admitted to himself, and the thought of telling Sirius was mortifying.
"Not really." He finally replied.
"Okay." Sirius said, still softly. He huffed a laugh, "I kinda always thought that you had a crush on James when we were younger."
Regulus looked at him, eyes wide, and his mouth more or less on the floor. That probably wasn't the reaction Sirius was expecting, because he raised his eyebrows with a questioning look.

*LAST PART in surgeon x patient au*
previous part, part one
James was embarrassed. So embarrassed. He had walked into Regulus' room without knocking. Again. He wore his cockiest grin and his confidence oozed off of him in waves. He planned to make a move today. Yet, when he sauntered into Regulus' room, the first thing he saw was another man sitting in his lap, cradling his face. Then, the 4 faces of 4 people in the room turned to look at him all at once. James' eyes were drawn to Regulus though.Â
James felt his face pale. His eyes snapped to where he saw Regulus' hands resting on the other man's arms. The other man was still holding his face. James could have screamed just then. But, thankfully, he didn't.
James couldn't believe it. Because of course Regulus already had a partner. James hadn't even asked before he started flirting with him. He was a little taken aback from how much seeing this other man affected him. I mean, nothing had happened between him and Regulus yet. They'd just flirted a little. That, however, did not stop James' heart from plummeting straight to his feet. He probably should have expected it though. Regulus was attractive. But, James always went into things with little to no plans, and that almost alwaysended with him getting burnt.
"Woah," the other man on Regulus' lap exclaimed, turning around fully to face James, "who's the Adonis that just walked through the door?" The other man smirked and bit his lip playfully. James looked at him, and instantly hated him a little bit for being decently handsome. James then instantly hated himself for hating the other man.
"Alright, that's enough out of you," said another man, with a mess of blonde hair and dark, slightly sun kissed skin. "Get up off your arse, dollface," he purred to the other man, who was now scrambling off of Regulus.
The other man shoved Regulus' face back his hand and barked out a laugh when Regulus promptly shoved him off. "Ugh, Barty, seriously?" Regulus groaned.
Barty. That was the other man's name. Barty. Huh.
James came to quickly when he realized that he ought to introduced himself to Regulus' visitors. He flashed a polite smile to the other visitor, who hadn't spoken. She was quietly standing by Regulus, and she was holding one of his hands gently, clutching her purse in her free hand. James cleared his throat and spoke, "Hello, I'm Regulus' doctor. Dr Potter, but you can just call me James." He smiled at them all.
The woman holding Regulus' hand was the first to respond. "Hi, James," she replied kindly, smiling back at him. She had the same dark skin and blonde curls as the other blonde man, except she had her hair woven in braids. She extended a hand toward James, which he met halfway. "I'm Pandora."
"Oh, and I'm Barty!" Barty also put his hand out for James to shake, reaching over the bed. As soon as James clasped his hand around Barty's to shake it, Barty blurted, "I'm the best friend." Barty grinned. "He's mine." Barty's eyes glinted madly, and for a second, though James would never admit to it, he felt scared. He let go of Barty's hand.
"Barty." James looked at Regulus when he heard his sharp voice. Regulus wasn't even paying attention to James. He was caught up in swatting Barty with the back of his hand. "Mate, you've got to stop acting like my crazy, possessive ex."
"Reggie! We've been over this! That is exactly-"
"Love." The blonde man spoke up, glancing down at Barty, who was shorter than him by a few inches.
"Alright, alright, I can take a hint," Barty scoffed and rolled his eyes. His face visibly softened, though, when the blonde man put an arm around him.
The blonde man nodded to James politely. "And I'm Evan."
James grinned at them all. Despite the fact that Barty was absolutely bonkers and the fact that Regulus liked that and was dating him, James thought that the 4 of them looked like a little family.Â
He cleared his throat. "Um, actually, the reason I've swung by is that I've got to start getting Regulus prepped for surgery. You all can say a quick goodbye, but then, our nurse, Dorcas, can show you to the lobby. The surgery is only about 2 hours, but the anesthesia will take a while to wear off. I recommend coming back tomorrow morning as most patients are pretty out of it after being on pain meds and anesthesia and all that stuff," James explained simply.Â
As soon as James was finished, Barty swooped forward and hugged Regulus. He was sure there was no way Regulus was breathing in an embrace that tight but the look of annoyance of his face was priceless. "Don't die!" Barty stood up again. "I'll have no one to torment! But seriously, Reggie, you are not allowed to die." Barty's eyes started tearing up and he sucked in a harsh breath.Â
"Good Lord," Evan mumbled under his breath, enveloping Barty in his arms. "See ya, Reg," he said in a normal tone, leaving the room, bag in hand, holding up a now sobbing Barty.
"Bye, Baguette," Pandora cooed in her airy voice, kissing Regulus' forehead, then leaving.
James quirked up an eyebrow at Regulus when the door shut. "Baguette?"Â
Regulus groaned. James felt a tingle in his stomach at the sound. He internally chided himself. No, bad, James, bad.Â
"She calls me Baguette and calls my brother Croissant because we're French," Regulus explained, rolling his eyes. He wore a smile on his lips though. Regulus shifted his ocean grey eyes to James and scooted over in his bed to make room for him to sit.
James gulped and shook his head hastily. Cleared his throat. "Ah, no, thank you," he mumbled. "Reg, I wanted to apologize for flirting with you. It was unprofessional of me and I didn't realize you were already involved-"
"I'm sorry, what?" Regulus snapped. "What do you mean 'already involved'?"
"I-uh-Barty isn't your..?" James trailed off, then chided himself again. This time it was for not finishing his own sentences.
"No," Regulus said, lips pursed. "He's my ex, but he's also my best friend. And he's very touchy and lovey dovey. Evan is his boyfriend."Â Â After a moment of horrifying silence, Regulus blurted, "I think they're going to get married soon."
James couldn't bring himself to respond. He felt a million times more embarrassed now for some unknown reason.Â
Before he could string together another apology, Regulus' hand darted out and dragged James down to sit on the bed next to him. Regulus stared right into James eyes, a million emotions swimming through their murky depths. Then, with no warning whatsoever, Regulus cupped James' cheek and pecked him on the lips.Â
James' eyes closed and he brought a hand to Regulus' back. His lips were so, so soft. His hand was warm and held James' face with so much care he could melt on the spot. He leaned in, expecting more, and when he was met with nothing, he opened his eyes. Regulus stared back at him, a centimeter away. Regulus had pulled back from him faster than he had rushed forward to him.
Regulus' face flushed madly and he turned away from James.Â
"Get me ready for my surgery, James."
"Okay, love."
Regulus turned back to face James. This time, James was the one bringing his hand up to cup the other man's face.Â
James anticipated what Regulus was going to say and before the words left his mouth, James murmured softly, "Don't worry, everything's going to be just fine, love. I'll make sure of it."
@jegulus-microfic , July 13th - Owl, G, Word Count - 308
âThis is a mess,â Mary declares, looking around the boyâs living room.
Regulus and James were sat in the middle of the mess on the couch, both of them looking extremely exhausted. They were hunched over the coffee table, James was sorting through papers and Regulus was signing off on a few of them.
James looks up. âYou think?â he groans. âI didnât think getting married would be this much paperwork.â
Laughing beside him, Regulus nudges the other boy. âWhose fault was that?â
Feeling the need to defend himself, James gawks at Regulus then turns to Mary again. âCan you believe him? He keeps trying to blame all this on me just because I proposed.â
The girl rolls her eyes, trying not to get in the middle of whatever was going on. âWhat is all of this for anyway?â
âOh, the actual ceremony.â James picks up some of the sheets. âCake, DJ, rings,â he explains. âIâm trying to sort them in order of when we have to owl them by, that way the more important ones are on top.â
Mary looks between the two boys, seeing that they definitely have not gotten enough sleep. She grabs out her wand and flicks it towards the table, making all of the papers levitate in the living room. Then, in another flick, sorts them all perfectly.
Looking dumbfounded, James just groans and face palms. âOh my God, why didnât I think of that?â
Regulus laughs beside him again. âBecause when I tried to tell you to, you said it would be faster to do it manually.â
âAgain! Blaming me!â James shouts, mock disbelief on his face. Mary laughs. âShould I start writing some letters?â
The younger boy nods his head. âParchmentâs in the blue cabinet. Thank you for helping us again Mary.â
âOf course,â she smiles, going to grab the parchment.

Part 9 of Medium!James AU
Previous Part | First Part
Regulus is sitting in a tree when James finds him. Heâs not sure how the older managed to find him, hidden in the leaves of the tree, but he supposes that the leaves are brittle and falling nowadays, and thatâs the few leaves that are left clinging to the tree.Â
âIs everything alright, up there?â James asks, leaning against the tree and gazing up at him.
Regulus hums, âJust getting some of my tree time before the snow comes in and makes it so I canât be in the trees.â
âDo you mind coming down here?â
âHow about you come up here?âÂ
James takes a second to respond before theyâre grabbing at one of the branches on the tree and starting to hoist their body into the tree, âI guess that works.âÂ
Eventually, theyâre sitting on a thick, sturdy branch not far from the one that Regulus is curled up on, slightly out of breath, âHow do you do that?â
Regulus laughs, âWhat? Is the big strong Potter not able to climb a tree?â
âI donât climb.â James shakes their head, âI havenât climbed a tree since I was like seven.â
âThatâs sad for you.â Regulus smiles, a small thing, âWhat did you need to talk about?â
James closes their eyes and leans their head against the actual trunk of the tree, âI just wanted to ask if you were okay. You got a letter at breakfast and I could tell that you were off. You left early.â
Regulus hums, taking a moment to gaze over Jamesâ form, he loves when theyâre this relaxed, âI finally got an owl back from my mother.â
James frowns, though they keep their eyes closed, âIs everything alright?â
âYeah, she was telling me that itâs alright if I stay at Hogwarts for winter holidays.â He explains, âWhich means, if Iâm careful about it, I can officially go with you over the break.â
âThatâs great! But thatâs not all.â Itâs not a question. Things like that are never questions when it comes to the Black family.
Regulus shakes his head, âNo. It was just a lot of her saying that the pressure of being the âperfect heirâ is all mine now that Sirius is gone. Just a bunch of her usual things andâŚâ
âAnd?â James pushes softly, though Regulus has never felt pressured by them. Heâs come to know that Jamesâ pushing is just light prompting and they never expect anything from him if he doesnât want to give it.Â
âAnd,â the younger sighs, âsheâs⌠sheâs been talking about me getting married as soon as Iâm of age and⌠taking the- taking the mark.â
That makes James open their eyes, not gazing over Regulus with alarm, âWhat?â
âI canât tell what youâre more offended by. The idea of me getting married off or the idea of me becoming a death eater.â
âBoth!â James says, their voice a bit loud. They apologize when Regulus flinches at the noise, âYou have to run away, leave them. Come with us. You⌠thatâs horrible.â
Regulus shakes his head, âI donât want to do either of those things butâŚâ
âI know.â James hums, their voice somber, âJust, keep it in the back of your mind. Sleep on it? Think about it when we go home.â
âYeah, Iâll⌠Iâll consider it.â
James smiles, small and a bit weak, âThatâs all I ask.â

Regulus had known many types of love. He knew he loved his brother, his friends, and he had once been in love with his best friend. But a love so pure, a love that didnât ask anything of him but to existâthat had only happened once. And it was with James.
He knew how to love James as naturally as he knew his own name. Before Regulus could even realize it was happening, he found himself entirely enamored by honey eyes. He never looked back. James claimed a home in Regulusâ heart and they had filled it with the sweetest of memories.Â
Sometimes, even when their words felt inadequate, and they stumbled upon their feelings, their eyes would lock and whisper âI love youâ when their lips couldnât.Â
Regulus had days when everything felt heavy, and so did James. On those days, they would take care of each other. When they couldnât attend to their own needs, caring for the other came as second nature. James would always make sure that Regulus was fed, and Regulus would insist that James got some proper sleep. Regulus could be careless with himself, but never with James.
James was a limb. James was his heart. James was everything to him. And without Regulus James would never be whole. Desire felt like a deficient concept in comparison to how much they ached for each other. They needed the other in order to exist.Â
The lines between obsession, lust and love were always blurring, but they didnât care. Not when they had found each other in this lifetime and knew they would on the next one too.Â

It had always hurt thinking about how quickly Sirius left, without any word to his baby brother. Older siblings always found a way out quicker, but it still pained Regulus to think about it.
Heâd never forget the look in Siriusâs eyes as he parted with him, the hand that comfortingly ran through Regulusâs short, curly hair, or the expression his face had worn. He looked broken. More broken than the Crucio curse could ever cause. But he had seen the light at the end of the tunnel, while Regulus was still crawling through. Heâd broken free much too late anyway.
The gate that kept him from a life heâd love was James. He was the reason Sirius had left. Regulus loathed him ever since, spitting out insults whenever he was close enough. James had plagued his thoughts, with those enchanting eyes and a comforting smile. It wasnât fair.
But, James was also the bridge to paradise. He would bring the terrors to an end. He would take Regulus away from his wretched parents and the people he had no choice to call his own family. James would take him to a place he would thrive in.
It was worse thinking about it. Regulus thought about James so much that it was disgusting. At least, thatâs what Regulus told himself as he drifted to sleep, holding a pillow close to him and pretending that it was that beauty of a Gryffindor.
But as he laid awake some nights, heâd dream of a life where he woke up night to James every morning. Where Sirius would stay with him, laughing heartily at his brotherâs cat-like behavior. Where his parents werenât his, and he was adopted into a family much like the Potters. Maybe then would he be different. As tears streamed down as face and onto the pillow every night, he fell asleep to the thought of his way out. His light at the end of the tunnel. His James Potter.
