The Hartford Eastern Railway was a historic 42-mile standard-gauge shortline in Washington state that ran from Hartford to the mining town of Monte Cristo. Incorporated in 1915 and operating until the 1930s, it successfully pivoted to tourism, utilizing custom gas motorcars—affectionately called the "Galloping Goose"—to bring visitors to the Rucker brothers' Big Four Inn. 

Big Four Inn was a resort near the base of the mountain built by the Rucker Brothers in 1921 until it was destroyed by fire in 1949.
