I installed Remembering the Bicentennial today and celebrated with a patriotic donut (which was generously brought in by the organizer of last weekend's event as they went about cleaning up).
First Lady Betty Ford Displaying Her “Bloomer” Flag, 6/24/1975
This flag, made for the First Lady’s car, features a pair of bloomers as a play on Mrs. Ford’s maiden name, Bloomer. The letters “E.R.A.” indicate Mrs. Ford’s strong support for the Equal Rights Amendment.
Series: Gerald R. Ford White House Photographs, 8/9/1974 - 1/20/1977
Collection: White House Photographic Office Collection (Ford Administration), 12/6/1973 - 1/20/1977
Image Description: Made of blue satin and trimmed in white lace with blue and red stars, the flag features a pair of red and white bloomers in the center as a play on Mrs. Ford’s maiden name, Bloomer. White text above the bloomers reads, “Don’t Tread on Me.” The letters “E.R.A.” below stand for the Equal Rights Amendment, an indication of Mrs. Ford’s strong support for the proposed amendment that would have given women equality under law through the United States Constitution.
