she   drew   the   short   straw   ,   truly   ––––   could   have   been   paired   with   absolutely   anyone   else   but   she   was   given   alicia   ,   the   gods   were   not   on   her   side   today   .   decides   to   look   on   the   bright   side   ,   though   ,   if   she   had   been   paired   with   xiomara   ,   she’d   have   her   brain   picked   constantly   for   the   entirety   of   the   task   –––   at   least   alicia   believes   she’s   empty   headed   and   that’s   the   end   of   it   .   doesn’t   speak   when   the   pairs   are   drawn   ,   only   heads   upstairs   silently   to   get   dressed   for   the   day   .      settles   on   a   pair   of   ripped   black   jeans   ,   a   cropped   hoodie   ,   vans   and   fingerless   gloves   ––––   it’s   cold   out   ,   should   probably   wear   a   hat   too   but   decides   against   it   ,   doesn’t   need   static   hair   today   .   ‘   come   on   ,   wicked   witch   of   the   west   .   ’   femme   shouts   as   she   jogs   down   the   stairs   and   toward   the   front   door   .   ‘   lets   get   this   over   with   .   ’   doesn’t   even   ask   which   of   them   were   to   be   driving   ,   immediately   hikes   over   to   alicia’s   jeep   ,   waiting   for   her   to   unlock   the   vehicle   .   the   drive   to   the   gas   station   was   mainly   filled   with   silence   ,   neither   of   them   wanting   to   converse   with   one   another   ,   the   only   noise   to   be   heard   was   lydia’s   acrylics   tapping   against   the   screen   of   her   phone   .   as   soon   as   the   faux   investigators   arrive   at   the   scene   ,   red   head   jumps   out   ,   expressing   her   desire   for   a   cold   bottle   of   water   but   is   only   when   the   pair   enter   the   building   ,   she   decides   against   it   –––   fresh   air   being   the   only   thing   she   craves   .   ‘   what   the   hell   ?   ’   she   grimaces   ,   places   a   hand   over   her   mouth   as   she   tries   not   to   breathe   in   as   often   .   ‘   this   place   is   in   serious   need   of   a   health   inspection   .   ’   optics   befall   the   lone   attendant   ,   standing   behind   the   till   ,   dark   eyes   flicker   between   the   two   girls   .   ‘   okay   ,   i   get   it   now   .   he   looks   like   what   this   place   smells   like   .   ’   lydia   whispers   ,   head   turns   to   alicia   ,   knowing   brunette   would   have   a   similar   reaction   .   

as  alicia  drives  ,  it’s  like  the  rattling  heater  can’t  work  fast  enough  to  dispel  the  bitter  appalachian  cold  that’s  settled  in  the  bones  of  her  car .     this  two - lane  road  cuts  between  lines  of  trees  that  stand  like  tall  sentinels  waiting  for  something  to  return  to  them  ,  and  it’s  familiar  ,  despite  her  having  not  been  in  the  area  for  years .     (   every  mile  put  between  them  and  the  cabin  is  another  mile  chasing  some  metaphorical  ghost  down  empty  backroads   --   what  is  it  they’re  going  to  find ?     is  something  better  than  nothing  ,  or  are  some  things  better  left  alone ?   )     when  they  reach  the  gas  station  ,  the  sky  above  is  gray  as  static  --  the  same  dull  tone  of  a  dead  television  channel .    the  parking  lot  sits  nearly  empty  ,  save  for  them  and  a  lone  toyota  that  waits  at  the  side  of  the  low  building .     alicia  doesn’t  let  herself  linger  long  before  she  cuts  the  engine  and  drops  from  the  driver’s  seat .     might  as  well  get  a  move  on .

lydia  enters  first  ,  and  the  redhead’s  initial  complaint  comes  just  before  alicia’s  met  with  the  same  stench  that’s  taken  to  the  building .     it’s  not  quite  the  same  as  what  they  had  been  met  with  in  the  basement  ,  but  it’s  almost  as  strong   --   alicia  can’t  pinpoint  what  exactly  it  smells  like  ,  but  it’s  alarming  to  the  senses .     the  rest  of  the  interior  ,  for  all  intents  and  purposes  ,  looks  normal ;   akin  to  any  other  gas  station  one  would  find  on  a  roadside  in  rural  maryland .     the  fluorescents  that  flicker  in  strength  wash  everything  in  a  too - bright  light  ,  reflecting  off  of  vibrantly - colored  packages  of  snacks  on  displays  lining  the  floor .     there’s  a  faded  budlight  poster  plastered  on  one  of  the  coolers  outlining  the  space  and  it’s  all  so  routine .     but  it’s  the  air  itself  that  feels  off  ,  regardless  of  the  smell  that  leaves  alicia’s  skin  crawling .

yet,   the  cabin  looks  nothing  the  same.     like  a  song  just  a  note  out  of  tune,   or  an  image  in  reverse.     it’s  in  the  little  things,   surely.     (   a  memorial  to  what  was    --    the  entertainment  center  has  some  lingering  dust  from  when  they  wiped  it  clear  just  hours  ago.     the  papers  on  the  fridge  are  fading,   curling.     the  carpet  that  was  dated,   even  back  then.   )     when  it’s  all  muted,   she  thinks  the  cabin  might  feel  like  it’s  breathing  with  them  all.     an  inhale  when  she  lifts  her  foot  to  take  a  step    /    an  exhale  when  it  lands.     she’s  not  afraid  of  the  dark,   but  the  place  feels  haunting  in  the  cool,   indistinct  gloom  of  fall.     not  haunted,   but  instead  like  something  from  the  past  looking  to  root  in  the  present.     it  just  didn’t  quite  know  how  to  fit  anymore.

god,   she  wishes  she  could  fucking  sleep.

when  alicia  makes  it  to  the  front  door  and  eases  it  open,   she’s  looking  for  fresh  air.     the  sky  is  spitting  rain,   just  enough  to  be  a  nuisance,   and  the  leaves  murmur  in  a  breeze  that  tugs  at  her  hair.     it  smells  like  fall    --    wet  leaves  and  something  woody,   or  even  rotting  lumber.     it’s  a  familiarity  she  was  sometimes  deprived  of  in  d.c.,   where  she  was  instead  encircled  by  steel  and  stories  she  often  had  no  part  in.     here,   on  the  porch,   it’s  almost  as  if  she  can  breathe  easier.     of  course,   she’s  not  the  only  one  here.     maybe  she’s  never  the  only  one.     reid,   his  shadow  interrupted  by  her  own  figure,   is  all  too  familiar  in  its  own  right.

“pass  it  over.”     alicia  drops  into  the  worn  twin  rocking  chair  next  to  him.     it  creaks  beneath  her,   the  yawn  of  something  left  untouched  waking  once  again.     in  another  world,   there  would  be  a  pair  of  grandparents  in  them  at  dawn,   mugs  of  tea  warming  their  palms.     in  this  world,   they’re  the  thrones  for  a  two - person  pity  party,   with  a  front  seat  view  to  the  dim,   echoing  forest.     she  offers  an  open  hand.     “if  you’re  planning  on  drinking  yourself  to  oblivion,   the  least  you  can  do  is  share.”
