I have been a Blackhawks fan and following Toews as long as I remember. But I was disgusted by some of his statements/stance when in 2020 hockey was coming back and everyone was against it and he was most vocal about resuming the play. His language was so ableist. It was really unfair for people like us who had two family members (of which one was a child) battling of cancer in hospital alone because the family could not be there because of pandemic. I saw his video, and when he said there is more to life than hockey. It hit me hard. I thought, now since its happening to you, you understand. I know I am not that kind of shitty person, but I couldn't help. Its my fault solely for expecting some empathy from him for common people. I don't know why I am writing this to you. But I thought I had to say it to someone and you will understand. I am happy he is recovering and getting help but it's complicated.
Last year when jonny said all those dumb things about how nobody really knows how one gets covid etc, i posted a little tag rant here. Within five minutes, a couple of moots reached out to me and we had a long (separate) discussion about it. tbh i was just gonna tag them here so i can just copy paste our convo but i realized THEY DEACTIVATED ALREADY (side note holy fck how long was i gone from here), so im just gonna sum up bits of it but basically:
I think what Jonny's behavior shows isn't so much ill will, but his white, rich boy privilege. I also think that privilege is this very insidious thing. Like, the moment you acquire it, the moment you live in a privileged context, you begin to forget about the facets of the other side. He’s always had hockey from a very young age, hung out with people with more or less the same standing as him, immediately got drafted to the nhl at a young age and, well, you know how the nhl is and the majority of people who are in it. All his life it was something he wanted to do, it was something that was his, and now suddenly -- this happened.
I don’t think you’re a shitty person for thinking ‘now you know how it feels like’. I’m pretty sure most people at some point in their lives had thoughts like this -- I sure did. But if it comes to the point where we’re actively wishing ill upon that person, then that’s something else.
I think that we want to see people we like as more good than they really are because we too are human, and honestly in these trying times we just want to see the positives. Sometimes it's nice to be invested in someone you're not gonna meet ever, just because there's a level of safety, and when that person we like says/does something that completely does the opposite of what we expect them to, it’s fcking devastating. It's okay to be hurt. It’s ok to be disappointed. More importantly: it is okay to step away from it for a certain amount of time or leave completely because in the end it's just a parasocial relationship: you don't really know them and they don't owe you anything except for their work professionally.
I’m very glad that Jonny realized that there is more to hockey, and I hope the long months he had to himself made him self-reflect about a lot of things. I don’t think we’ll all have the same thoughts about everything from now on, but it’s a start.
I know I like to joke about jonny being the love of my life, the only man with rights etc, but im also the same kind of person who would reblog a hannibal gifset with him just having killed someone and tag it as ‘my poor little meow meow’. I’m saying I understand that all of the celebs/people I follow aren’t perfect and I try to always keep that line as a reminder. So thank you anon for sharing & trusting your thoughts with me even though my stupid blog is mostly about this dumb boy. I hope your family is doing a lot better now. I hope you dont think this is a longass defense of Jonny BECAUSE IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT, feel free to kick his ass if he needs it lol. If you think you don’t want to support him anymore, that’s okay too! You’ll always have the good memories of him, he made you happy and you’ll always have that, and you can move on. Ok this is now sounding like a friend encouraging someone after a break up im gonna stop now dkfalsdfjdf
