Bill Evans in 1963, by Jim Marshall.
Peri Cousins, the woman with whom Evans was living when he first began to use heroin, offered as plausible an explanation as any [as to why he used heroin]: “When he came down, when he kicked it, which he did on numerous occasions, the world was – I don’t know how to say it – too beautiful. It was too sharp for him. It’s almost as if he had to blur the world for himself by being strung out.”
His friend Gene Lees called Evans’ death “the longest suicide in history.”

Taking an educated guess that Paul Chambers and his bass are on the right, and Cannonball Adderley’s alto sax is on the left.
