I’ve been thinking on how Hifumi’s trauma has been presented for years now, and with the release of Bad Ass Temple VS Matenro, I feel like now’s as good a time as any to give my thoughts on this.

Note: This is in no way a defense of KR for the presentation of Hifumi’s trauma, but it is an analysis of such. I’m open to discussion on this and you’re free to disagree with me at any point on this. Most of this was also written BEFORE the release of the album, save for the last section.

JAKURAI

He’s always thinking about death. It’s a fascinating thing - how much can the body take before it’s had enough? Where do we go after we die? If the thought is in his head, he’ll explore it, so long as he knows his limits. He likes to believe in a life after death only because ‘it feels too simple that there should be an end in death.’

To him, there’s no point in believing that death should be a taboo subject. It’s a normal part of life that comes to everyone. Of course, he wouldn’t discuss it with anyone, but he likes to engage in philosophical thoughts as such.

He of all people knows that human life has an indescribable value. Whether it’s taking life away or prolonging it, Jakurai has always been around death and hasn’t felt discomfort around it in years. However, he has an extreme respect for the subject and won’t tolerate thoughtless words about the dead.

HIFUMI

“It’s super, super weird to think about!” Hifumi has a very strange relationship with death - he isn’t aware of risks all the time, so he gets into situations where he doesn’t know that he could die with a misstep. However, when reality sets in, death can be a paralysing fear for him.

He believes in life after death because of ghosts - he doesn’t have a solid impression on heaven or hell either. It’s comforting to an extent to know that people he’s loved may stick around with him, but he’s not sure that he’d want all ghosts around him.

Death is not something he fears, but it’s not something that occupies his mind a lot. So long as he’s happy and healthy, he tries not to think about dying unless it’s wild hypothetical scenarios he talks about in conversation with a friend. It’s just not interesting enough for him to think about right now.

DOPPO

Death is inaction. Death is being unable to do anything. This is his greatest fear in death. No matter how terrible his life is, Doppo doesn’t want to die. He just wants to be away from the pressures of his current life. Thinking of how the next life can be more terrible makes his stomach turn with discomfort.

Even worse than there being a difficult life ahead is the thought of nothing in the end at all. He doesn’t want to spend his current life wasting away in an office job if it means it won’t matter in the end. Death therefore isn’t a solution to the problems of his job or depressing life.

JAKURAI

He can be unempathetic, sometimes needing things explained to him. Jakurai is more logical than feeling, and will tell someone who vents their problems to him that ‘you can solve it simply by doing x, y, z’, not really hearing their problems. 

It takes someone being visibly upset for him to realise where he mispeaks. He apologises straight away, explaining ‘i didn’t understand’ and never tries to excuse himself. It isn’t that he doesn’t want to empathise, but it’s difficult for him to connect with experiences that he doesn’t have. However, if you haven’t explain that he’s hurt you, he might just miss it.

Jakurai tries to maintain his composure. He’s not someone that yells when upset, but his remarks are scathing. As seen with Ramuda, his blood may boil though his face doesn’t change when he tells them how they’ve displeased him. Jakurai being rude is distant, dismissive. At that point, he can even just say he doesn’t want to talk to you and walk away.

HIFUMI

Another example of being ‘unknowingly rude’. Hifumi’s lack of tact when not in host mode gets into trouble since he says what he sees (see when he meets Gentaro/Samatoki). He will point out ‘wow your hair is messy today’ and ‘that’s weird’. 

It’s more of a ‘childish’ rudeness, since he doesn’t actually mean harm with his words. In that, his apologies can often be half-hearted if he doesn’t know what he’s really apologising for. He apologises because it’s the right thing to do, but doesn’t always necessarily know why he’s doing so.

Hifumi wants to be friendly. so much that he opens his heart to people easily. He doesn’t like being unfriendly, but if he knows people are being petty against him, he’ll fire back with a personal remark without holding back. It’s only a short quip though as he doesn’t want a sustained argument.

DOPPO

He will talk behind your back. Doppo has enough on his plate with work, so another person that bothers him will get trashed violently online or to someone who has no connections. He’s talked about wanting to kill his boss, but you’d have to be VERY horrible to him to make him wish harm upon you.

If he’s caught having these thoughts, he returns to self-deprecation. You can call it rude if you see that you end up having to offer him support rather than him supporting you for hurting you. He doesn’t apologise for what he did to you, but apologises for his shortcomings.
