âWell Iâm glad I could be here for him,â Tara smiled, genuine in her response, despite the double meaning behind it. Of course, she was glad to be here for Jax too, the experience was even more terrifying for a new parent, but it came with complications. Tara had sworn to herself to never go back there, to rekindle a relationship of any nature, wanting to focus solely on her career, and bettering herself. But somehow, those paths had crossed. It seemed fate had intervened, and now here she was, talking with Jax as though nothing bad had happened between them.
âOh I donât doubt that. But I did mean you,â she confirmed with a chuckle, well aware that Gemma had passed that trait down. As Jax thanked her, she realised the situation was past debating over, so she simply nodded, eyes softening as she did so. âOf course. Youâre welcome.âÂ
âHow have you been? With all this, I mean. You look like you could use a good nightâs sleep.â
Jax nodded in agreement, grateful generally she was here at all. There was a time he really thought he might never see her again. Taking another sip, he sat back, glancing through the window to outside. "Took the world ending to see you again." He wondered, and not for the first time, if it hadn't been for the war, would she ever have come back? "Who'd have thought we'd wind up here, huh?"
"I dunno," he shrugged, amused at the concept, but ashamed to remember how he'd first reacted at news of Abel's birth. In fact, he'd been the first one to fold his cards, to give up before he got too invested. "Took me a sec, to wrap my head 'round all this. But Mom's always said us Tellers don't die easy. Guess I just needed remindin'." Now that he'd been given hope, however, there was no looking back. The stubbornness had certainly kicked in.
The tone seemed to shift between them, Jax noticing the difference in her expression. He'd always been able to read her. It was almost comforting, their change of pace familiar. But it was a place they hadn't been to in a very long time. It inspired him to ask something that had been on his mind for a while. "It true you asked to be put on his case? Abel, I mean. You requested it?"
Jax chuckled dryly at the thought of a good night's sleep. He couldn't remember the last time he'd experienced that. Probably with her. "Sleep? Never heard of it." Gesturing with the coffee pointedly, he finished it off before placing the paper cup down on her desk. Again, the tone had shifted, become more vulnerable. He was less guarded around her than he would be with his brothers, but still, there was a resistance there. "Honestly, I dunno. Don't know what to say." It was all his fault, but he was still coming to terms with that. "He didn't deserve this. I'm just - sorry it happened."
âAbel. Zâhatâs a wonderful name,â Wanda smiled back at him, despite her own jealousy. The possibility of having children of her own seemed further and further away, considering who she was, but she still managed to feel happiness for those who did. Surely there was no greater feeling. That was, until, those children got sick. Her elation for his family was quickly overcome with a far more harrowing feeling, and she could only imagine the stress it invoked. Still, she did little to let that show, outside of her concerned eyes, not wanting to alarm him. At a time like this, Jax needed reassurance, and support. Even if they were strangers. âIâm sure heâll be alright. The doctors here⊠zâhey are incredible. Zâhey will stop at nothing.â Not even death, in some cases.
âIt was,â Wanda agreed with a nod, wishing she could go back there, if only for a moment. When she thought of it, she pictured the breeze on her skin, and heard the sound of their fatherâs guitar. Not a day passed where she didnât miss it. âWanda. It was nice meeting you, Jax. Iâll be zâhinking of your son. I hope heâs better soon.â
"Thanks," he nodded, appreciative. Wendy had chosen the name back when she was pregnant. Jax had hated her for it at the time, hadn't been ready, but the second he'd been born, the name had suddenly held great meaning. He couldn't imagine it being anything else. It was perfect.
Hearing her sympathies, Jax glanced up in surprise, not having expected it from a complete stranger. The apparent kindness of some of their new neighbours still threw him, and considering the life he'd lived so far, he supposed it always would. But he couldn't deny he'd found himself reflecting upon it more than once already. At mention of doctors, he gave another genuine smile, thinking of Tara, how she'd asked to be put on Abel's case. "Yeah... yeah, they sure are. Wouldn't trust anyone else," he admitted.
Again, kind words that unexpectedly threw him. Jax blinked for a second before nodding, finding his composure. Talk of Abel hit him harder than he'd ever imagined it to. Gemma was right when she'd said nothing could prepare you to be a parent. "You too, darlin'. 'Ppreciate that. Guess I better figure this shit out quick, huh?" He chuckled, gesturing to the multiple cans of formula he still held before turning to exit the store.
//.
âItâs not thanks to me.â Of course sheâd done everything she could to help, even without her personal connection to Jax and his family, sheâd still have made Abel her top priority. He was a baby, he needed it most. But taking credit didnât feel right to her, she may have provided the care and medical equipment, but Abelâs strength came from within himself. âAnyone here wouldâve done the same thing.â She mirrored Jaxâs smile, trying to reassure him. âWe should be seeing real signs of improvement soon. Heâs a fighter. Iâd go as far as to say heâs a very stubborn young man. I wonder where he gets that.â
âMaybe,â he shrugged a shoulder, making his way over to sit in the chair across from her desk. âBut no-one else here is you.â Jax met her gaze then, wanting to look at her properly, wondering how sheâd actually been going. He felt like theyâd barely spoken since the group had moved, and whilst Jax was thrilled Tara had moved too, they hadnât spent any real time together, Abelâs health the top priority. Even though he didnât believe itâd go both ways, he missed her.
Jax couldnât help but smile at the news, glad to hear from a trusted source that his son was actually improving. It had been a hellish few weeks. âI dunno â Mom?â He grinned for a moment, knowing thatâs where heâd inherited it from. Expression sobering, he nodded at her, glad heâd decided to stop by. Heâd been growing incredibly restless. âThank you, Tara. Seriously. I donât care if you donât wanna hear it.â

I don't wanna say goodbye 'cause this one means forever. inspiration déclenchée par @ohmyfakecreations <3
Although the hospital was slowly beginning to dismiss it's patients, the workload didnât seem to be thinning. Tara was quickly learning that the rebels required a lot of medical care, and although sheâd never complain about helping people, she couldnât deny her exhaustion. âOh. You read my mind,â she smiled as she got out of her chair, walking over to retrieve the coffee from him. She wasted no time in sipping it, needing the caffeine. âHowâs Abel today? I was just finishing my paperwork before doing the rounds. He was my first stop.â
The family had practically been living at the hospital for two months, and in that entire time, Taraâs first stop had always been Abel. It meant more to Jax than he could ever properly verbalise, knowing that someone he trusted as much as Tara was taking care of his boy. At the mention of it now, he wore a hint of a smile, nodding. âHeâs, uh⊠I donât really know. The same, I guess. Asleep. Tiny.â He paused for a moment before clearing his throat, hand rubbing the back of his neck. âHeâs not worse. And thatâs thanks to you.â
