It’s like I have a “You Must Be This Engaged to Pay Attention” threshold. I don’t do well with lectures when I’m not supposed to take notes. It’s so easy to tune out people talking—and not even on purpose! It just doesn’t engage me enough, so I zone out. It doesn’t hit that threshold, and you know what? Neither does watching TV.
I have to do something else to get to the minimum engagement threshold or I’m going to zone out. And that something usually involves my phone. Playing a puzzle game, or a color by number, or a crossword, doesn’t take too much brain power but gets me to the threshold so I can pay attention. Counterintuitive as it may seem, multitasking does really help me stop zoning out on the task I’m supposed to be doing.
If you’re talking and I’m on my phone doing a puzzle game, I’m not ignoring you; I’m trying to listen to you.
Don’t really have a point, just I’m not paying attention to you if you’re talking to me and I’m not doing something else, and if I am doing something else like a puzzle or doodling, I’m paying attention even if it doesn’t look like I am.
I remember my divorce attorney used to doodle in his notebook while testimony was being given, and I would wonder if he was even paying attention. All of a sudden his head would shoot up and yell, "Objection," and then then prove he was paying more attention that any of us.
