Feels like something's wrong with me and they know it
They took one look my way and exposed it
I'm ready to give up the fight
And just admit that they are right.

Les Mis Letters 1.1.9
I love how Hugo put 18-- so not to date his novel as if we aren't reading it in the Year of our Lord 2026.
"Satan may visit our house, but the good Lord lives here" I need this to be on a sign hanging outside my door.
Les Mis Letters 1.1.8
Whenever I read the brick, I always expect to be bored until JVJ shows up, but then every time I find myself not wanting to move on from the bishop. Heâs probably the happiest part of this book xD
Les Mis Letters 1.1.7
Reading the names of these French cities as someone who very much does not speak French is like reading the âbegotsâ in the Old Testament. Iâm just making stuff up here.

Reading this chapter as a teen is what moved me to being anti-death penalty.
Les Mis Letters 1.1.3
"I can see why you are shocked; you think it shows pride for a poor priest to use the same conveyance used by Jesus Christ."
I wonder if M. Myriel actually thought that's what the citizen's problem was since that's how he sees things or if this was him subtly calling out their prideful expectations.

Les Mis Letters 1.1.2
This reminds me of when they'd tell me to bring a book to read during speech therapy, and I'd bring Les Miserables.
Also, I feel like I shouldn't have the goal of basing my spirituality on a fictional character, but M. Myriel is the type of Christian I aspire to be T_T
Les Mis Letters 1.1.1
"Although it in no way concerns our story..."
At least he's upfront about it.
Funny lines (that are probably just funny cuz of the autism):
"Who could say? We do know that when he returned from Italy, he was a priest."
"Still later, M. Myriel was totally surprised to learn he had been appointed Bishop of Digne."
"...always out of breath, because of her constant activity, and also her asthma."
I have been ~influenced~ by a friend of mine (you know who you are đ) to do Les Mis letters this year. Tbh, I'm not entirely sure what it is other than reading a chapter of the brick every day for a year (I think there's some official thing? But Imma just do it for fun tbh). I stopped almost halfway through the brick about 5 years ago and never finished. But I guess this means I'm coming back to Tumblr just to do it again xD
Oh, and the fun part is that I'm also trying to read the Bible in a year again.... Such a great idea to be reading these two giant texts at the same time.... So gonna keep up with this....
I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year. I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year. I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year. I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year. I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year. I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year. I will keep up with Les Mis Letters this year.
do you ever just think about Jesus living here on earthÂ
i think sometimes we tend to think He just bounced from one miracle to another and everyday was a Bible story but His ministry lasted for three years and the Gospels donât actually cover that much so
imagine all those ordinary days??Â
He probably had favorite foods and morning routines and sore dirty feet from walking while sweat ran in His eyes in the hot Judean sun and He got blisters and hiccups and colds and maybe He snoredÂ
all the times He laughed till He cried and i bet He had inside jokes with His disciples. imagine having an inside joke with the person who gives you breath to laugh in the first placeÂ
and He had human skills He knew how to build a house and cook and wash his clothes and readÂ
passing food at the dinner table and bumping hands with JesusÂ
talking about silly inconsequential things like the weatherÂ
maybe some nights John was sleepy and he leaned against Jesus and could hear His heartbeatÂ
maybe some nights a disciple had insomnia and he climbed out of his bedroll to find Jesus sitting against a rock, looking up at heaven, and they sat and watched the stars togetherÂ
(the God of the universe looking up through short-sighted eyes at His creation, and the disciple wants so badly to ask what it was like to shape each star, but he looks at those calloused human hands and something in him trembles)Â
do you ever think that the ordinary days so far outnumbered the miraculous ones that the disciples, sometimes, almost forgot
and then He goes and turns water into wine and feeds five thousand people from a kidâs lunch and brings dead Lazarus walking alive out of the tomb and they just kind of lose their breath
not because they didnât expect deity to accomplish the impossible but because this God has been living with them
itâs not the miracles that are unthinkable
This is so beautiful.
Also, imagine his ordinary days with his family. Imagine Joseph telling him stories and he listening, paying attention. Imagine when Joseph and Mary put child Jesus in bed and could hear his breathing sounds. Or imagine the inside jokes he had with his mother about his father, or with his father about his mother. Imagine the God of the world not only looking at the stars but also watching the majesty of a sunset. Imagine child Jesus running around the house, singing beautiful and cute cultural songs that Mary mightâve taught him. Imagine his joy when he ate his favorite food or taking a bath after a hot day.Â
Imagine Josephâs doubt when figuring out that he would have to teach carpentry to God himself. And that Jesus, the Lord, actually took time to listen and learn his old fatherâs words. Imagine Godâs humble attitudes. We usually say that he humbled himself by coming as a human. But itâs only when we actually think about what makes us human, that we get the idea of how big was it. The God of the world taking time and putting effort to learn what we, merely humans, had to teach/say. And he wanted to. He wanted to be near us. And be one of us. When God lowered himself, thatâs when He showed us how big He was.Â
âAnd there are also many other things Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books which were writtenâ -John 21:25
Almost none of Jesusâs teen years where mentioned in the Bible. Imagine all the normal family things He, Mary, and Joseph did during that time.
I really would like to know more about His teen years. A lot of teenagers like to think that Christianity is not for them, it is too restrictive when we kind of forget even Jesus was a teen. What if He had friends who He liked to play around with during the afternoon; Friends He regularly visited. And didnât rabbis teach children meaning imagine Jesus sitting down for a lesson about His own Word (Thatâs like listening to someone reading a book you read). What if women and men looked at Jesus and was like âwhat a nice young man. He will grow up to be a great man somedayâ.
So many feels. Just wow.
this is so nice.Â
Let me take some moments. Iâm crying.
thereâs a beautiful quote from the Early Church Father Gregory Nanziazen about exactly this that I just LOVE: âAnd perhaps He goes to sleep, in order that He may bless sleep also; perhaps He is tired that He may hallow weariness also; perhaps He weeps that He may make tears blessed.â Christ simply had to have these ordinary days and ways; that was how one God enveloped the duties pagans assigned to entire pantheons. Christ knew sleep and He was the God of Sleep; He weeps to become God of Tears; He talks and preaches to become God of Rhetoric; He tells parables to become God of Storytelling; He learns carpentry to be God of Trees (and Joseph taught Him just the right way to fashion wood to His will that when He approaches the fig tree He does not have to think twice about what to say). He dies and is God of Death; He rises and is God of Resurrection; He lives and is God of Life; He is human and so becomes God of Humanity.
Merry Christmas. Exactly what I needed to read today. Thank you.
I have one more thought to add: Jesus understands our lives perfectly because he atoned for our sins, but also because he lived life as a human. I believe that to be his followers we ought to think of him often. I often try to think of his mircles, but I can also think about him throughout the day as I experience ordinary things. When I am eagerly awaiting a delicious meal to finish cooking, I can pause to think that there were probably meals that Christ himself felt excited to eat. When I feel cold water on my hands, feel soft fabric on my skin, or feel the tight, happy embrace of a friend, I should remember that Jesus, the Lord of all, also partook of this human experience. He did it so that he could save us. He did it not so that he could be like us, but so that we can learn to be like him.
