When I was in my 20s, I lived in a city with a wonderful beach and a great lesbian community. A bunch of us (all lesbians) set up a campfire in the evening and were planning to do some music jamming and just hanging out. We were all completely sober, just having fun.
Not long after we arrived, a group of young men set up a fire down the beach from us and started having their own gathering and chilling session, though theirs included a fair amount of alcohol, from what we could see.
One of them came over and invited us to come hang with them. We thanked them for the invite but we were not interested. He pressed it a bit and we told them âgirlsâ night out, sorry,â he left and we resumed hanging out.
A while later, two of them came and much more aggressively pushed the issue, confronting us about our sexual orientation. A friend said in jovial tones: âSo what, if we donât want to hang out with you then we are lesbians? We are just hanging out like you guys are, we are having girl time, so please respect that and do your own thing.â They seemed to genuinely respect that and left, but when they got back to their campfire, it seemed that wasnât cool with their friends. We could see them gathered together, commiserating about us. They looked very intense and agitated and were watching us like hawks. We packed up and left.
How many times have women had to curtail their leisure activities for safety reasons because some guy or guys could not take no for an answer? This affects us on so many levels in so many ways.
