As promised a few glimpses of last month’s @wcfsymphony performance, capping off our year-long Evolution of African American Music residency. Pictured with the orchestra are jazz vocalist and historian Bruce Henry – who led the residency – and Waterloo’s own Felicia Smith-Nalls; we also had the opportunity to celebrate the life of one our long-time violinists. Such a moving and meaningful way to wrap up the concert season!
@wcfsymphony just wrapped up a season-long exploration of the evolution of African-American music with vocalist Bruce Henry. A look at the performances are forthcoming but the best illustration of the spirit of the project are these portraits by students at Central Middle School, who participated in an in-school residency with Bruce earlier this school year.

Jason and I have similar aesthetic interests and similar goals in where we see orchestra programming going. I know Jason is very much about helping audiences to see connections between different types of music, connections they may not have considered or noticed.
Composer and friend-of-wcfsymphony Timo Andres with some thoughtful words about our shared approach. This weekend the orchestra scales down to present Timo’s Paraphrase on Themes of Brian Eno alongside jazz-influenced music by Copland and Milhaud. My take on the show is also included in the Courier’s write-up:
It’s a neat program, bringing together music for smaller ensembles inspired by or drawing upon jazz and pop as source material. Copland is known for experimenting with jazz rhythms, and French composer Milhaud was totally taken by jazz when it made its way to France in the 1920s. I’ve always liked working on Timo’s music and exchanging interpretations and thoughts with him.
Saturday in Cedar Falls!

Next week @wcfsymphony performs Harry Potter and the Sorcerers’ Stone so of course we had to prep with some musical magic around the Cedar Valley! 🎬🧙🏻♂️🎹

Earlier this fall @wcfsymphony presented a kaleidoscopic program of orchestral music connected to jazz whose centerpiece was Morton Gould’s American Symphonette. Unbelievably, this wonderful entry in the composer’s series of short, vernacular-inspired symphonies is currently out of print!
For more on American Symphonette – and some wonderful insight into its remarkable impact on other American musics – check out this exploration by pianist Lewis Porter.

🚨 New season day! 🚨
@wcfsymphony‘s 2022-23 line-up dropped this morning – highlights include my first shots at La Mer, a Harry Potter film, Rückert-lieder and a few more choice pieces 🙏🏻
Very proud of the array of musical experiences and perspectives we’ll be sharing with the community over the next twelve months!

After years of rumors connecting Madlib with Talib Kweli and yasiin bey on a sophomore Black Star project the long-awaited collaboration finally dropped earlier this month as an exclusive on Luminary. I guess if you’re going to wait twenty four years to follow up a seismic debut might as well bring on the greatest beat maker in the world and make the subject matter relevant af!
