It’s Still Your Path… Not Theirs…

I don’t regret the decisions I made in my own life, some sixty years ago, and why I waited to come out.  A lot was going on in society and knowledge about gender identity was not completely understood.  Many others, like myself, also stayed in the closet as a survival move.

But I would like to think, if I was born in this day and age with the knowledge that is available today, I would have been more vocal as to how I feel and gained the knowledge I needed.  My life could have taken another path and I could have been out much sooner as my authentic self.

Those of you who read this, who have never felt wrong with your gender identity, gender dysphoria, may not understand the bravery of a transgender person.

The life of transgender person is not easy to put it mildly.  The statistics of our group are shocking.  But it is the truth of what we face every day to varying degrees for a very long time.

So those who might say it is just a trend don’t know what they are talking about.  Even well meaning cisgender persons say stuff that make me cry inside at times.  We have come so far but have a long way to go.

So guarded in secret much of our lives as we try to understand ourselves, our impulses and actions.  These brave persons do what they need to do to live their lives with a glimmer of hope and happiness.  

The quest for UN-biased and up to date information is something a transgender person has needed to do to survive, to explain to ourselves and to well meaning skeptics.  The uncounted hours, days, years, decades to read about others like ourselves gives us solace that we are not alone with these feelings.

We all know life is not fair and so you have been patiently waiting as you have lived your life.  But as time has pasted you have grown weary of hiding who you are inside.  The clothes you wear are for society and not for you as they are a mask that eats away at your inner hidden girl who longs to be seen.

But you’re afraid of what others might think and the consequences of how society might react to your inner truth, your girl inside.  The truth, the secret, that you guard tightly too and indulge when opportunities present themselves.  It’s in those private times that you let her out to wear those sensual feminine clothes that to you feel so real.

There are so many mixed feelings and thoughts in those precious moments that you question everything.  Like wishing you could stay this way, be her, and this would never end,   Why was I not born a female?  Why do some say that a penis makes me a man?  What’s stopping me?  Why do I have to go back acting as him and not be her?  Why do I care what others think?

This totally rings true in my life as I came out as my true authentic self in my fifties.  Life presented opportunities to come out of the closet and explore being her.  To come out and wear the clothes in public that just feel right for my authentic self.  To let relatives and those close friends know this is something I must do to be my authentic self.  It has become a journey, an exploration and unmasking, of my girl inside.
