This song represents for me the last scene with Bev and Kenneth when Bev came down the stairs while Kenneth was writing his suicide letter and also how Bev continues to deal with the grief of losing her son.

“I came by today to see you Though I had to let you know If I knew the last time that I held you was the last time I'd have held you and never let go Oh it's kept me awake night wonderin' I lie in the dark, just asking why? I've always been told you won't be called home until it's your time”

This is my thought of how Bev felt after finding out that her only child had killed himself, especially after she had just saw him downstairs. If she would’ve known what he was really doing she would’ve wanted to hold him tight and never let him go.

“I guess Heaven was needing a hero Somebody just like you Brave enough to stand up for what you believe and follow it through When I try to make it make sense in my mind The only conclusion I come to Is that Heaven was needing a hero like you”

This is more of her grieving process of her trying to come to terms of why her son left his parents. It is her just trying to come up with any reasoning for the situation.

“I remember the last time I saw you Oh, you held your head up proud I laughed inside When I saw how you were standing out in the crowd You're such a part of who I am Now that part will just be void No matter how much I need you now Heaven needed you more”

This stanza is about when Bev came down to the living room and saw Kenneth all dressed up and writing his note. He told her he was going to a job interview and she was proud and happy for him. She didn’t realize the change that was about to occur in their lives.

For my final thoughts on Fences, I want to talk about Bono. In books and stories I read and movies and shows I watch, my favorite characters are the underdogs. There is something about rooting for the person, group, or team that has no reason being where they are that keeps me entertained. The same goes for the underrated characters, those who are in the book, play, or movie but they aren’t really have a main character. My favorite underrated character in Fences is Bono. Yes he is in almost all the scenes and he is the main character’s best friend, I think he is still pushed to the “back burner” most of the time but then again, who wouldn’t when you are in the same area as Troy. My favorite part about Bono in the play is that he is like the wise old owl who just sort of sits back in the corner and watches everything that is going on. He doesn’t say much, doesn’t move much, he just absorbs everything in. Bono brought Troy and Rose together and I think he tries to play the calming middle man through their life. He is obviously Troy’s best friend but he loves Rose as a friend too and he doesn’t want to see her get hurt so he tries to convince Troy to stop seeing Alberta. There is one point in Act 2, Scene 1 where Bono and Troy are talking while building the fence; Bono is referring to Cory’s question of why Rose wants this fence so badly, responding with the quote “Some people build fences to keep people out… and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you.” To me that is Bono saying to Troy that I know you have been unfaithful to Rose, who happens to be my friend and while yes you are my best friend, she is also a good friend so just watch what you are doing. In the play, and literature in general, I get more deeper connections from the underrated characters than I would from he main characters and that quote is a great example of Bono representing that character type perfectly.

Erdrich 273 I love how Lulu describes Nector in this sentence, she says it in such a classy yet savage way, which is such a reflection of her life. Lulu puts on a good front but she will still fight whoever or do whatever needs done to get her point across.
