Black Anima was a shock not only because it found Lacuna Coil doing a hard pivot away from the commercial overtures of their last few records, but also because it was far heavier than anything they’d ever done before- even their first four albums played like a slightly darker variant of the Gathering rather than the forceful and borderline death metal presented here. To be sure, this iteration of the band didn’t abandon their trademarks: “Now or Never” still contained the familiar touchstones that came with Cristina Scabbia’s vocals and melodies, along with the experience and craft that came from having been a fairly successful working band on the international stage for over 20 years. But Andrea Ferro apparently finally figured out that he wasn’t much of a singer, and his shifting to a harsher growl made a world of difference in amplifying the increased churn and aggression of Marco Coti Zelati’s music, which pushed harder and more ominously than anyone was expecting from a band that only one album earlier covered a Madonna song with minimal variation. “Now or Never” worked alongside the rest of Black Anima in heralding a creative rebirth for Lacuna Coil, and even if didn’t maintain their commercial standing it did set them on a more sustainable path.
